Hello everyone! I hope you all enjoy the video. I know that this one is a bit on the shorter side of things as far as many of my other lore videos go, but I didn't want to make this video long for no reason; I felt as though I'd said all that I'd needed to. Also, I should note that this video is not a comprehensive study of the entire history of the Hist, it is more a study of what a Hist is, and there relationship with the Argonians and Tamriel. I could've gone on a included things such as the Sleeping Tree from Skyrim or the Hist Tree in Leyawiin stolen by the Blackwood Company, but those things are not important in understanding the broader narrative. I know I've been a bit of a Bethesda doomer lately, as well, so I'm hoping to have a more positive video out soon about the Elder Scrolls series . Stay tuned for live streams and further smaller uploads as I have a lot of content planned for the future. The issue the next: The Elder Scrolls' lore became so huge but so broken in many pieces. It is time Bethesda to call a big Nirn Historian Congress to consolidate once and for all the lore to date: purge the errors, fix the flaws, made clarity about some bizantine discussions [Dwemers and Snow Elf for example], to keep the core of Nirn lore in good health [like the Hist Trees and Argonians REAL history]. I really dislike the last dlcs on TESO and ES games are about men [Sorry but i don't like Skyrim or High Isles Bretons stories at all]. We need comeback to Elves [the Maormer exile, The Dark Elves and Orc origins] and the Hist Trees [the Oblivion Crisis could be a good start point] to recover the epic in Elder Scrolls. And it is time to focus an eye on Akavir, Pyandonea, Atmora and Aldmeris. ES needs land there INMEDIATLY. ESO can be a good place to start that road, a DLC based on Black Marsh or any of those lost lands. Or if Bethesda wants men history, it is time to look back to the Kothringis or the Nedics. I cannot handle another nord vikingish ES lame story.
@@A9hl6fgx5ebisb72op maybe In the end. High elves love to play the immortal card so maybe the incarnation of extinction seemed incompatible to them. Besides mages going insane on the quest to knowledge is poignant enough for me to assume ancano simply bit off more than he could chew when it came to unraveling aetherius and succumbed to his own stupidity.
My alltime favorite thing about the Hist, is during the oblivion crisis, the hist sent a signal out usher the argonians to return home to defend the homeland.
Lore theory: The Hist are the the descendent of Harold, the tree ghoul, whose story started at a place called the Mariposa military base in a time so ancient no one remembers the details - no one except maybe the Hist themselves.
The dumbing down of the lore and world is the thing that hurts the most about this series. I'd be fine with the simplified mechanics in each entry if they didn't take the known lore and just change it all the time for the worse. The older lore of the Nords and Skyrim is badass, with the Celtic influence, the flying whales, the Gehenoth, Floaters, and all that cool stuff. In Skyrim, we really get generic fantasy, with generic fantasy lore and creatures. At this point I don't even want to explore Argonia because it'll be completely watered-down from what I would hope to see, and would make learning about it even more frustrating because every time a new entry comes, the old lore then becomes "what could/should have been" and feels kind of worthless to learn in the first place because it has no place in the series going forward. I care more about the future of Morrowind's modding future with projects like Home of the Nords and Tamriel Rebuilt than I care about Bethesda's continuation of the series because it feels like the modders truly care more about the series than BethSoft.
I firmly believe that the larger a company becomes, the less deep their content has to be in most cases. They used to need to sell to their regular demographics to make a profit before, but now the studios are so large and the scope and budget of the games is so huge that they can't just sell it to the core audience, they need to sell the game to everyone. Why would you put more effort in the lore and connecting it to the world a player exists in when you can create more fun enjoyable mechanics or sth.
@@EmilyAliceTempest lol funniest thing from this comment is the fact that bethesda hasn’t achieved any sort of progress for the in game mechanics 😂 They are just so creatively bankrupt right now. Honestly funny how bethesda, a developer that have been working on first person games for over a decade get outclassed by CDPR who made their first fps in cyberpunk. Bethesda needs a whole ground-up rebuild of their creative structure cuz they are so outdated
@@ethanfaiello2373 While yes, CDPR dropped a mammoth sized ball when they initially released Cyberpunk. CDPR knew they fucked up, and especially the fans knew they fucked up, but instead of just letting it fester and blame the customers for not enjoying the game they chose to learn from it, and go on to fix and add on to Cyberpunk to the point it's almost a completely different game from what it was at launch. The difference with Bethesda is that with each new installment to either the Elder Scrolls or Fallout the core audience and fanbase could tell the overall experience was becoming either simplified, worsened, or having previous components removed completely. While some of the changes were welcomed, the vast majority would end up becoming a detriment to the player experience. They take very little of valid criticisms to heart and continue to either make the same, or even worse mistakes than before.
the way the Hist are described makes them sound a lot more like mushrooms than actual trees. One giant organism, separated from the plant kingdom, that biologically has more in common with humans than plants, whose visible sections act as reproductive organs to spread spores. It's curious how there are actual tree-sized mushroom forests not far from Black Marsh, up north in Morrowind. I wonder if those had their own "spore people" or if perhaps those are part of the Hist too. I wonder if a similar thing is present on Akavir, since there are snake-humanoid creatures (Tsaesci), which perhaps also reproduce like Argonians, through their own connection with the Hist, or a different sentient mushroom-tree organism. It's all very interesting and thought-provoking.
Hi! I study plant science. Love the video and the Hist, but I just wanted to point out that many of the claims about the “Wood Wide Web” lack sufficient evidence, especially the ones that have imparted trees with human/higher agency. While it’s still possible that these things are true, it is far from a settled matter that was mistakenly taken for granted in part because it feels like a really nice idea. The whole debacle is a fascinating example of when science communication goes wrong.
I've been binging your channel the past few days. Holy quality. I'm in love. I'm gonna keep watching until I run out of content like I did with camelworks then imperial knowledge. Tye timing of this video man, I can't have words to describe how good it just hit on me tonight. Cheers lml PD: Ohh broo ty so much for the mention, ty to you from my true mnimic
Given how little information there is surrounding the Hist, I have always imagined Argonians as a creation of the Hist to interact with the environment more directly, kind of like how your nervous system uses its connection to fingers to perform tasks. This would place them as directly being a descendent of the Hist and not a Beastfolk, which I think is kinda rad. Either way, they will always be one of my favorites, I just hope we get something on the Hist some time soon. Great video!
Am I the only one that saw “Hist Trees” and thought it was poorly spelled “Histories” for a second before realizing it was an Elder Scrolls video? The games usually only refer to them as “The Hist” so I’ve never read “Hist Trees” very often so that’s probably why it looked wrong and my brain went to the other word instead.
Do you think Bethesda should add a new playable race ? I would personality like Maormer or The Lefthanded Elves (assuming next TES game is in Hammerfell )
I think a new playable race could be really cool. We were talking on stream about how they could even add a playable race in a DLC in the future for TES VI or something like that as a way to get people to buy (although I'd much rather have it at launch). I think at the end of the day I want to see the racial choices matter more to your gameplay experience, like how they do in BG3.
Another inspiration that I think the TES lore took from the mayan and mexica/aztec cultures, is the ties of creation with an entity related to change and death. Also how it is viewed by certain folk like the mesoamerican and the argonian - hist. Mictlantecuhtli or Ah Puch (For the mayans) gave the bones of a previous species that were used by his brother Quetzalcóatl to create human kind. Of course there are a lot more details that are very different between the mesoamerican myths and the TES lore, but I think there is also an inspiration there with the whole worldview of the argonians and how they started to percieve Sithis.
I like the occasional inserts of a meme here and there that you did with this video, or maybe you've done it with previous videos and I just haven't noticed it. , and isn't so frequent that it's annoying. They weren't high art or anything, but I enjoyed the Keyes novels. BGS really should outsource the Elder Scrolls IP to a more competent studio, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Not to mention that their best Fallout Game wasn’t even really from them. They just need to New Vegas an Elder Scrolls game somehow.
Bethesda is kind of the reason, why Im hesitant of getting really into the Lore of TES. I dont think BGS cares enough to really try to work with the previous lore. Also I dont think there is anyone still working there, that could produce the strange thus interesting lore that we have seen in Morrowind for example. And even if someone could create unique weird lore, Im not sure if the leadership welcomes that lore.
