I only tried the 20-60 and 50 1.8 and this covers everything I need for my personal photography Style - coming from Sony a-Mount (Alpha 77) everything about the S5 with these cheap starter lenses feels much better. I was impressed from day 1
I love the 16-35. It will be my permanent A cam lens for interviews and talking head. You’re correct about the af performance. It did the impossible, kept my toddlers in focus.
I've just ordered my first S5M2X and went with the Lumix 24-105 f4 so I was relieved that it got an honourable mention. I picked up the Lumix 85mm f1.8 too and, although not your chosen 85mm lens, I'm comfortable with my decision after hearing your feedback on the Lumix AF versus the Sigma 85mm AF. Great content as always.
My favorite is the 28-70,. I love it for interviews, even portraits and I still can't believe the relation between image quality, price and weight. For 85, I go with the Lumix because of price and AF. But am a bit jealous about your Sigma ;) The 24-105 was my first lense, too. And I am pretty happy, that I did not sell it. I use it very often for seminars and all kinds of situations, when changing lenses is no option. But of course, it es a compromise in terms of i.q. and weight. I like your way of talking, man and appreciate your speed. But this time, it was almost a bit too fast for me. lol Thanx for your dedication and passion!
All the S-Pro lenses are excellent tbh. My favs are the native 24-70 f2.8 and 50 f1.4. Focus breathing is so well controlled. I will acquire more and look forward to the S1H mkII.
Hey, Josh! I’ve picked up the Sigma 28-70mm based on a review you posted a while ago, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve used it at 3 events, and I’ve found that I don’t have to pick up the S f/1.8 primes at all. I wish it had a longer reach, but given it’s size, it’s a tradeoff I’m willing to make. Thanks for all the work you do!
I have the 50mm S Prime f1.8 The 24mm S Prime f1.8 and the kit 20 - 60 Zoom which by the way is a great lens for during the day as when I'm shooting people moving around I generally have it stopped down to F8 with an ND attached anyway so the variable aperture isn't an issue. The primes give me that extra light when I need it in the low light or that extra separation for the specialty shot.
i've moved from 20-60mm to 24-105 as you suggest that, also my cages and other stuff from Nitz is the same as yours as you suggest them and im happy with all of them, thank you your chanalis really helpful, keep it up

I just got my S5 like a week ago and I quite love it. I bought it along with the Sigma 24-70, as the price on the combination was ridiculously good on black friday (I effectively paid less than 2000€ new!). The Sigma AF is not great for video but i was prepared for that, the DFD system isn't the best to begin with so I kinda expected to need to focus video manually from the very moment i decided to get the s5. The lenses' image quality however, is absolutely stunning. It is almost absurd how sharp the lens is, especially in the center. The only real con I noticed so far is, that the lens is rather heavy, but that's a trade-off i am willing to accept for the image quality being as good as it is.
Thanks for explanation. I use Leica sl2-s with 24-70 and 90 mm summicron. just try 90mm F2 and see the result, its something out of this world. best portrait lens I have ever seen. expensive but its worth it.
My main go to lens is the Panasonic 24-105. It covers 90% of what I shoot, being an amateur. I also have the 20-60 kit lens for the odd occasions where I need something wider, and the 70-300 for a bit of birding/wildlife. Unfortunately my S5 is being repaired right now due to a shutter fault. Hoping to get it back soon. I never had a problem with any of my other Panasonics so hoping this will be the only time it goes to the repair shop, only had it since Christmas too (:
Ah sorry to hear you've got it in repair dude! Hope it comes back soon and better than ever. Yeah Panasonic don't have a track record for being unreliable so this seems quite rare to me. Hopefully it didn't set you back much and you've got the repair done through warranty?

I have the kit lens 20-60 for gymbal, Sigma 35f2.0, Panasonic 50f1.8 and my favourite lens from Samyang 85t1.8 with Sigma MC21 adaptor. With this lens I shoot corporate clips and wedding films. #panasonic
Thanks for the recommendations. I'm switching to L-mount from Lumix m43 so coming to this a bit later than most. As a mostly video producer, you probably have no trouble with the reverse or opposite zoom direction that Sigma lenses have from Panasonic, do you? Video producers rarely rack or zoom that quickly or unconsciously. But I found it so hard to switch between Pany and Oly m43 lenses that I returned an Oly lens because I kept zooming in the wrong direction I intended. I was used to Pany direction since it's the same as Nikon, which I used for 30 years before switching to Lumix. Anyway--good to hear your thoughts but I think I'll stick with Pany lenses on my new S5 ii once I get it in.
Great video as always!! I just got the sigma 24-70 & sigma 35 1.4. So far I’m loving them for my wedding shoots. I had the panny 50 1.8 but I’ll be selling it because in 4k60 the crop makes the 35 easier to work with and not to mention the 24-70. I can’t wait for the sigma 16-28 & 70-200 to be released! I’ll probably be replacing my panny 85 for the sigma 105 macro soon for more reach during wedding ceremonies and maco capabilities.
Sounds like you know what you need in a lens and I love that. You can only carry so many with you at a time, so your choices seem totally reasonable to me! The sigma 35 1.4 is meant to be a thing of beauty. I’m yet to try that one, but I’m sure it’ll blow me away!
@@JoshCameron compared to the 1.2 version it’s cheaper and probably not that much different in build quality. And it’s smaller and lighter. I’m definitely liking it so far! How come you went for the 28-70 over the 24-70?
@@emiemi8709 Im good luck with it so far. I use 1 area & -1-3 on the af settings and it works. I also use MF+AF so in case the focus isn’t fast enough I can manually get it there quick. In a wedding scenario (what I film most) it only struggled at night during the send off so I had to manually focus and let my couple walk into focus. It worked fine!
When I tried the S1R for a few weeks, I was very impressed with the Pro S 50mm f1.4. Stellar image and build quality. Another superb Sigma lens (next to the 85/1.4) is the 105/2.8 macro (DG DN for L-mount, not the HSM version). For those of you in portrait and commercial photography it’s highly recommended and quite affordable too.
@@jtes1442 Panasonic publishes an excellent 48-page guide online on all AF possibilities of the Lumix S cameras. I’ve used it to set-up the camera for a/o portraits and I had no issues whatsoever. I used the most recent firmware which apparently is a big improvement. In AF-S mode the AF reacts very reliable and fast. In AF-C mode it’s a bit less decisive than e.g. the Sony A7RIV and the Z7II, but only in edge-case situations. E.g. when the model waves a veil across her face it takes the camera a fraction longer to regain focus. But in all honesty, that’s just a fraction. I would be hesitant to recommend the camera for fast action sports or wildlife (tracking is less persistent than Sony or Nikon), but for portraits no issue at all. What striked me was how accurate eye AF was. No front-focusing on eye lashes or erratic switching eyes like I experienced with some Fujifilm cameras over the past years, but always perfect iris hits. Another less mentioned benefit of contrast detection-based AF (with DFD) over hybrid AF (contrast and phase) is that there are no banding issues or artefacts in difficult lighting situations. The way how the S-cameras display eye-AF is a bit getting used to. It draws a box over the face and two intersecting lines to mark the eye. It’s perhaps a bit ‘busy’ but you get used to it quickly.

Should I go with the kit lens, 20 to 60, but I fear that might not perform good at night?? So which will be best one that's all rounder, for use cases ranging from taking head shots to some, low light b rolls and portrait photography as well?
@@contentcreatortube1518 the 20-60 kitlens is a good deal in combination with the S5II. The camera has excellent IBIS, so you can rely on longer shutter speeds when light gets low, but of course, it also depends on the subjects. Don’t expect very shallow depth-of-field as well. In some markets there’s also the 24-105 as a kitlens. That’s a great lens. Long range, excellent OIS and a good macro capability as well. It is a bit on the large and heavy side, though. I personally however, would opt for a nice prime lens. The 50/1.8 is a great choice. It restricts you to one focal lenght, but 50mm is very versatile. The IQ of that lens is great, considering its price. Finally, you may want to check out Sigma. Their 28-70 is perhaps too expensive for your liking, but the iSeries lenses can be a good option too. Also, check out pre-owned lenses.
Josh, thank you for this review. It really helps me to choose my future first lenses for S5. It feels like for now there's a lack of a wide zoom lens F2.8 with good AF for L-Mount for those who feel F4 is not enough. Sigma 14-24 has 2.8, however, Sigma AF with L-mount... well... it doesn't work; Lumix 16-35 has F4 - not worth the $1,500 for it. So I was thinking about a wide fix to replace zoom, like Sigma 20mm 2 but according to your review, AF is not like Lumix lenses. So the only option is to wait for Lumix S 18mm 1.8 or Sigma 16-28 2.8 (which based on other Sigma AF might not work as well). Based on all the above Lumix S 18mm 1.8 might replace a wide zoom for those who think Panasonic 16-35 and its F4 doesn't feel enough. I'm curious what you think about it?
My favorite lenses so far are the i series ones I own : 24mm f2, 65mm f2 and 90mm f2.8. Compact, superb built quality, not too expensive, and amazing images from wide open. Very happy with them ! I do only still, and mostly at night. That 28-70 is tempting. But people said it's so so at 70mm at 2.8. Did you find that too?
Hi. Great video as always... I feel my wallet getting lighter. I'm using S5 with sigma 24f2, pana 20-60 and 50 1.8. just picked up the s pro 70-200 f4 after selling the 24-105 as felt like I needed more reach. That being said I'm still thinking about replacing the 20-60 and I'm heading towards the 28-70 for that 2.8!
i use the pana 24-70 on a daily basis. but for portrait i highly recomment the sigma 85mm f1.4 its worth every penny! unfortunately i had to sell it but I'll buy it again as soon as its possible!
Hi Josh, I agree with you that the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 is an incredible option for our S5. I sometimes hesitate with the Lumix 24-105 because of OIS, extra reach and wider angle. I have set the focus to Linear but only angle proposed is 360 degres but other values are shaded on the menu: is there a way to access those other smaller values? Many thanks for great videos and advise.
For the linear focus on the Sigma lenses it's unfortunately more limited, so you may not be able to access anything but 360 at this point in time! It sucks a little I know :(
@@JoshCameron ok, wait and see if something comes from Sigma in near future. For the time being, I will complement the S5 + Sigma 28-70 f2.8 pair with GH6 + Lumix Leica 12-60 for its excellent handheld stabilization, his great AF and it’s extra reach …. As I have both cameras that setup plus few primes seem a nice not too heavy travel combination (35mm 1.8 Lumix on S5 and 42.5 f1.2 Nocticron on GH6). Any advise on that combination ? Have you already merged S5 and GH6 footage ? How was the result? I like using Natural profile for most of the situations with limited contrast but haven’t yet tried to merge S5 and GH6.
I've been thinking about getting the 16-35mm. As far as L mount goes, I have the Panasonic 24-70mm and 35mm. I generally find myself using the zoom lens on the wider end and at times feel 24mm is not wide enough. Seeing this, perhaps I should grab the 16-35mm.

Man I wish there was a 16-35mm f/2.8 rather than f/4. I’m usually shooting 4k60fps on the S5ii in tight environments, so my 24-70mm ends up being like 36-105mm with the 1.5x crop, which is a bit too tight. 16-35mm would be like 24-52mm which would be great. I feel like my best option is the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8, but that doesn’t have much range and ends up being 26-36mm. I love the S5ii but I really think Lumix needs to release more of the industry standard f/2.8 zooms 😢
I use 20-60 and 85 1.8 for videos For photo, 70-300 for daytime and 85 1.8 for nighttime (all Panasonic lens). Been thinking about swap my 20-60 for a 24-105, or keep the 20-60 and get a Laowa 85 5.6 micro. I don't have to change lens so frequently if I get the 24-105 but 20-60 + Laowa micro are cheaper (in my region) and has wider angles and 2X magnification. It's a tough choice.
Would be interested to know which lens you recommend for macro, I believe the Sigma 105mm is very good. I use the kit lens and also Leica R mount 35, 50 and 90 mm with really good results.
What lens would you recommend for a beginner videographer? I have been on GoPros and iphones for years and want to shoot a short film someday. I plan on going the handheld route.
If you want the most versatile lens possible and you want to shoot handheld, then the 24-105 will get the job done for you, all the while being decently sharp and incredibly capable :)
In my S5 bag is... 28-70 and Pana 50 1.8. 99% of the time I use 28-70 and look for something wider. Would you recommend 20mm f2 from Sigma (vlogging, teleprompter work, landscapes)?

This was helpful. I have the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 EF with the Sigma MC-21 adapter. Nice lens but the setup is fairly heavy. Was thinking about the 16-35, 24-105 Lumix S lenses or the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 as they seem to be lightweight options. Thinking for mostly gimbal, some hand held, run and gun type of work. Any recommendations?
If you’re going handheld more often than not , then 100% 24-105, however if you’re an avid gimbal man, then I’d suggest the 28-70 as it’s lighter and a little easier to balance since the barrel doesn’t extend by much. I genuinely think both would suit you to the ground though. If you’re used to the constant 2.8 then maybe the 28-70 may feel a little more at home! Hope this helps :)
Hi Josh. I'm currently using the 20-60mm kit lens with S5. Do you know which aperture is best to use when video recording outdoor street walking, shopping videos at 20mm using the kit lens? I'm trying to minimize blur areas but not go too high into the aperture.

I just shot a wedding this weekend on the Sigma 24-70. Pulled focus the whole day. I'd be curious to see if the 28-70 could help me use auto focus at least 40% of the time.
Not super great to be honest. I’ve heard Lumix branded lenses have an advantage with the motors in them. I personally am sticking with manual focus for video.
Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐

The 20-60 is actually a freaking amazing lens considering it basically comes with the camera. Honestly it's better than anything you've thought of as a "kit lens" before. Yeah it's slower at the long end but these days you can shoot video at ISO 4000 and it looks great, and with photos just increase the flash or shutter speed. I'd give the 20-60 a try before you spend big on anything else.

Should I buy S5 with 20-60 as a kit or grab S5 and lightly used 24-104? Just starting out and I am a bit more focused on photography than filmmaking. Thank you for your attention and valuable time.
The 24-105 is more versatile than the 20-60, although heavier and larger. If you're just starting out, you don't have much to reference regarding size and weight. I used a Canon 24-105 as a general walkaround lens for years, pairing it with a fast 35mm for night time and low light indoor shooting. The smaller aperture of the 20-60 can hinder you a bit in low light, too. The f4 constant apeture might not be that fast, but it will keep exposure roughly the same at all focal lengths. If you plan to do a lot of night shooting, maybe get a Sigma 28-70 instead, if you can afford it. It's much lighter than the 24-105 and not much longer than the 20-60, and much better in low light.

I really like the idea of 24-105 as it has a pretty good reach, just wish the aperture could have been 2.8 instead of 4 and that would have been just perfect for me but I understand that that is asking a lot. @@Shalin.S.Shah. You're most welcome. You'll be happy with your choice, and you'll take loads of great photos. The S5 has fantastic high ISO performance so it will be fine for night photography that doesn't involve movement. Or you can do some long-exposure photography at night, like light trails with traffic. Eventually, you can get a fast prime, maybe even an adapter and a cheap but fast vintage lens like a Pentax Super Takumar 35mm f2 or 50mm f1.4. Look for a RUclips video called 'Modern Tech + Old World Charm: Vintage Lenses on the Panasonic S1', it will show you what's possible with vintage lenses.
Been using mostly my canon ef n fd glass..its been too expensive lately to ship things here...fml.. but I got myself the 20 60 n 85 pana glass before all these pricey shitshow and that 85mm is so good now when I think of having the 35mm n 18mm..I am sure I wont be disappointed at all ;)
@@JoshCameron Mauritius, a prime lens like the 85mm cost me 57$ to get it then I find myself paying 15% tax on the total cost including that 57$ shipping cost haha.

I have the kit lens 20-60 for gymbal, Sigma 35f2.0, Panasonic 50f1.8 and my favourite lens from Samyang 85t1.8 with Sigma MC21 adaptor. With this lens I shoot corporate clips and wedding films. #panasonic

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm switching to L-mount from Lumix m43 so coming to this a bit later than most. As a mostly video producer, you probably have no trouble with the reverse or opposite zoom direction that Sigma lenses have from Panasonic, do you? Video producers rarely rack or zoom that quickly or unconsciously. But I found it so hard to switch between Pany and Oly m43 lenses that I returned an Oly lens because I kept zooming in the wrong direction I intended. I was used to Pany direction since it's the same as Nikon, which I used for 30 years before switching to Lumix. Anyway--good to hear your thoughts but I think I'll stick with Pany lenses on my new S5 ii once I get it in.

I just got the sigma 24-70 & sigma 35 1.4. So far I’m loving them for my wedding shoots. I had the panny 50 1.8 but I’ll be selling it because in 4k60 the crop makes the 35 easier to work with and not to mention the 24-70. I can’t wait for the sigma 16-28 & 70-200 to be released! I’ll probably be replacing my panny 85 for the sigma 105 macro soon for more reach during wedding ceremonies and maco capabilities.
Sounds like you know what you need in a lens and I love that. You can only carry so many with you at a time, so your choices seem totally reasonable to me! The sigma 35 1.4 is meant to be a thing of beauty. I’m yet to try that one, but I’m sure it’ll blow me away!
@@JoshCameron compared to the 1.2 version it’s cheaper and probably not that much different in build quality. And it’s smaller and lighter. I’m definitely liking it so far!

@@emiemi8709 Im good luck with it so far. I use 1 area & -1-3 on the af settings and it works. I also use MF+AF so in case the focus isn’t fast enough I can manually get it there quick. In a wedding scenario (what I film most) it only struggled at night during the send off so I had to manually focus and let my couple walk into focus. It worked fine!

When I tried the S1R for a few weeks, I was very impressed with the Pro S 50mm f1.4. Stellar image and build quality. Another superb Sigma lens (next to the 85/1.4) is the 105/2.8 macro (DG DN for L-mount, not the HSM version). For those of you in portrait and commercial photography it’s highly recommended and quite affordable too.

@@jtes1442 Panasonic publishes an excellent 48-page guide online on all AF possibilities of the Lumix S cameras. I’ve used it to set-up the camera for a/o portraits and I had no issues whatsoever. I used the most recent firmware which apparently is a big improvement. In AF-S mode the AF reacts very reliable and fast. In AF-C mode it’s a bit less decisive than e.g. the Sony A7RIV and the Z7II, but only in edge-case situations. E.g. when the model waves a veil across her face it takes the camera a fraction longer to regain focus. But in all honesty, that’s just a fraction. I would be hesitant to recommend the camera for fast action sports or wildlife (tracking is less persistent than Sony or Nikon), but for portraits no issue at all. What striked me was how accurate eye AF was. No front-focusing on eye lashes or erratic switching eyes like I experienced with some Fujifilm cameras over the past years, but always perfect iris hits. Another less mentioned benefit of contrast detection-based AF (with DFD) over hybrid AF (contrast and phase) is that there are no banding issues or artefacts in difficult lighting situations. The way how the S-cameras display eye-AF is a bit getting used to. It draws a box over the face and two intersecting lines to mark the eye. It’s perhaps a bit ‘busy’ but you get used to it quickly.
One question, Its going to be my first pro camera, S5 ii but I don't have money, I can only buy one lens, which one should I buy? Should I go with the kit lens, 20 to 60, but I fear that might not perform good at night?? So which will be best one that's all rounder, for use cases ranging from taking head shots to some, low light b rolls and portrait photography as well?
@@contentcreatortube1518 the 20-60 kitlens is a good deal in combination with the S5II. The camera has excellent IBIS, so you can rely on longer shutter speeds when light gets low, but of course, it also depends on the subjects. Don’t expect very shallow depth-of-field as well. In some markets there’s also the 24-105 as a kitlens. That’s a great lens. Long range, excellent OIS and a good macro capability as well. It is a bit on the large and heavy side, though. I personally however, would opt for a nice prime lens. The 50/1.8 is a great choice. It restricts you to one focal lenght, but 50mm is very versatile. The IQ of that lens is great, considering its price. Finally, you may want to check out Sigma. Their 28-70 is perhaps too expensive for your liking, but the iSeries lenses can be a good option too. Also, check out pre-owned lenses.
Josh, thank you for this review. It really helps me to choose my future first lenses for S5. It feels like for now there's a lack of a wide zoom lens F2.8 with good AF for L-Mount for those who feel F4 is not enough. Sigma 14-24 has 2.8, however, Sigma AF with L-mount... well... it doesn't work; Lumix 16-35 has F4 - not worth the $1,500 for it. So I was thinking about a wide fix to replace zoom, like Sigma 20mm 2 but according to your review, AF is not like Lumix lenses. So the only option is to wait for Lumix S 18mm 1.8 or Sigma 16-28 2.8 (which based on other Sigma AF might not work as well). Based on all the above Lumix S 18mm 1.8 might replace a wide zoom for those who think Panasonic 16-35 and its F4 doesn't feel enough. I'm curious what you think about it?
My favorite lenses so far are the i series ones I own : 24mm f2, 65mm f2 and 90mm f2.8. Compact, superb built quality, not too expensive, and amazing images from wide open. Very happy with them ! I do only still, and mostly at night.
That 28-70 is tempting. But people said it's so so at 70mm at 2.8. Did you find that too?

I'm using S5 with sigma 24f2, pana 20-60 and 50 1.8. just picked up the s pro 70-200 f4 after selling the 24-105 as felt like I needed more reach. That being said I'm still thinking about replacing the 20-60 and I'm heading towards the 28-70 for that 2.8!

i use the pana 24-70 on a daily basis. but for portrait i highly recomment the sigma 85mm f1.4 its worth every penny! unfortunately i had to sell it but I'll buy it again as soon as its possible!

I agree with you that the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 is an incredible option for our S5.
I sometimes hesitate with the Lumix 24-105 because of OIS, extra reach and wider angle.
I have set the focus to Linear but only angle proposed is 360 degres but other values are shaded on the menu: is there a way to access those other smaller values?

For the linear focus on the Sigma lenses it's unfortunately more limited, so you may not be able to access anything but 360 at this point in time! It sucks a little I know :(

For the time being, I will complement the S5 + Sigma 28-70 f2.8 pair with GH6 + Lumix Leica 12-60 for its excellent handheld stabilization, his great AF and it’s extra reach ….
As I have both cameras that setup plus few primes seem a nice not too heavy travel combination (35mm 1.8 Lumix on S5 and 42.5 f1.2 Nocticron on GH6). Any advise on that combination ?
Have you already merged S5 and GH6 footage ? How was the result?
I like using Natural profile for most of the situations with limited contrast but haven’t yet tried to merge S5 and GH6.
I've been thinking about getting the 16-35mm. As far as L mount goes, I have the Panasonic 24-70mm and 35mm. I generally find myself using the zoom lens on the wider end and at times feel 24mm is not wide enough. Seeing this, perhaps I should grab the 16-35mm.
I just found out there's a rumor about Sigma 16-28mm 2.8 for L-Mount in May - looking forward to it, might work for you as well.

Man I wish there was a 16-35mm f/2.8 rather than f/4. I’m usually shooting 4k60fps on the S5ii in tight environments, so my 24-70mm ends up being like 36-105mm with the 1.5x crop, which is a bit too tight. 16-35mm would be like 24-52mm which would be great. I feel like my best option is the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8, but that doesn’t have much range and ends up being 26-36mm. I love the S5ii but I really think Lumix needs to release more of the industry standard f/2.8 zooms 😢
If I had to get by on 3 lenses, theyd be the 20-60mm, 35mm, and 85mm Lumix trio. I also have a 50mm.
I use 20-60 and 85 1.8 for videos For photo, 70-300 for daytime and 85 1.8 for nighttime (all Panasonic lens). Been thinking about swap my 20-60 for a 24-105, or keep the 20-60 and get a Laowa 85 5.6 micro. I don't have to change lens so frequently if I get the 24-105 but 20-60 + Laowa micro are cheaper (in my region) and has wider angles and 2X magnification. It's a tough choice.
I shot product video, manual focus only and has never used a gimbal before.
Would be interested to know which lens you recommend for macro, I believe the Sigma 105mm is very good. I use the kit lens and also Leica R mount 35, 50 and 90 mm with really good results.

If you want the most versatile lens possible and you want to shoot handheld, then the 24-105 will get the job done for you, all the while being decently sharp and incredibly capable :)

This was helpful. I have the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 EF with the Sigma MC-21 adapter. Nice lens but the setup is fairly heavy. Was thinking about the 16-35, 24-105 Lumix S lenses or the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 as they seem to be lightweight options. Thinking for mostly gimbal, some hand held, run and gun type of work. Any recommendations?
If you’re going handheld more often than not , then 100% 24-105, however if you’re an avid gimbal man, then I’d suggest the 28-70 as it’s lighter and a little easier to balance since the barrel doesn’t extend by much.
I genuinely think both would suit you to the ground though. If you’re used to the constant 2.8 then maybe the 28-70 may feel a little more at home!

Hi Josh. I'm currently using the 20-60mm kit lens with S5. Do you know which aperture is best to use when video recording outdoor street walking, shopping videos at 20mm using the kit lens? I'm trying to minimize blur areas but not go too high into the aperture.
F3.5 should be just fine. By blur areas, does that mean that you'd like for the background to be somewhat in focus too?

I just shot a wedding this weekend on the Sigma 24-70. Pulled focus the whole day. I'd be curious to see if the 28-70 could help me use auto focus at least 40% of the time.

Not super great to be honest. I’ve heard Lumix branded lenses have an advantage with the motors in them. I personally am sticking with manual focus for video.

Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐
Laowa do a 9mm "Zero-D" lens that's only like $500 I think, and it's a 9mm FF lens. That would be equivalent to 13.5mm FF when shooting at 4K 60.

The 20-60 is actually a freaking amazing lens considering it basically comes with the camera. Honestly it's better than anything you've thought of as a "kit lens" before. Yeah it's slower at the long end but these days you can shoot video at ISO 4000 and it looks great, and with photos just increase the flash or shutter speed. I'd give the 20-60 a try before you spend big on anything else.

Is it possible to adapt L Mount lenses to a m43 camera with autofocus?
Should I buy S5 with 20-60 as a kit or grab S5 and lightly used 24-104? Just starting out and I am a bit more focused on photography than filmmaking. Thank you for your attention and valuable time.
The 24-105 is more versatile than the 20-60, although heavier and larger. If you're just starting out, you don't have much to reference regarding size and weight. I used a Canon 24-105 as a general walkaround lens for years, pairing it with a fast 35mm for night time and low light indoor shooting. The smaller aperture of the 20-60 can hinder you a bit in low light, too. The f4 constant apeture might not be that fast, but it will keep exposure roughly the same at all focal lengths. If you plan to do a lot of night shooting, maybe get a Sigma 28-70 instead, if you can afford it. It's much lighter than the 24-105 and not much longer than the 20-60, and much better in low light.

I really like the idea of 24-105 as it has a pretty good reach, just wish the aperture could have been 2.8 instead of 4 and that would have been just perfect for me but I understand that that is asking a lot. @@Shalin.S.Shah. You're most welcome. You'll be happy with your choice, and you'll take loads of great photos. The S5 has fantastic high ISO performance so it will be fine for night photography that doesn't involve movement. Or you can do some long-exposure photography at night, like light trails with traffic. Eventually, you can get a fast prime, maybe even an adapter and a cheap but fast vintage lens like a Pentax Super Takumar 35mm f2 or 50mm f1.4. Look for a RUclips video called 'Modern Tech + Old World Charm: Vintage Lenses on the Panasonic S1', it will show you what's possible with vintage lenses.

If you don't use AF for video then there shoudn't really be any downsides. The only issue is that adapted glass has much slower AF
