I think that's a really interesting concept, taking good decks from different formats and putting them against each other. Would love to see more of this
Man, talking about Power Creep AND talking about Old VS New decks??? I've been working on a video talking about UPGRADING old decks, but not pitting them against new decks. Great idea here Andrew. Between videos like this and GLC, you've been a big inspiration for me.
Man, when he said "Evil Ball for knockout" I really felt that. This was my favorite era, and the one where I played competitively the most. Ill just end with this. "Quaking Punch for 30."
I would contend that Night March actually was a deck from around this time that also set up extremely quickly. Battle compressor, acro bike setups meant you were going first turn so often, but I think it would also have a miserable time versus Lugia because of how fast it sets up and how high the HP is.
@@Kaleidophoenix I realized after I sent this that Joltik can just smash over Lugia pretty easily, that might actually not be the worst matchup. But Mew with Lost City would probably be a death sentence for the deck, the prevalence of the lost zone would be very hard to account for
This is actually the type of video I was hoping to see in the future! Would be cool to see a version of Lithium's Cross banlist cup (ygo channel/series). Basically all the best decks from history of the game compete in a bracket to see who comes out on top.
I personally preferred the similarly played Darkrai (from XY Breakpoint) that counted all your dark energy, combined with dark patch, max elixir et cetera as older decks go. Favorite older deck is a variant of Archie's blastoise, getting blastoise out first turn, then rushin' in with Keldeo; those good old times!
I've been playing the TCG on and off since 2011 and I think Lugia and Palkia sit up there with Seismitoad for some of the most annoying and just unfun cards in the game for me. With that said, this video is great. Thank you for making content involving Lugia somehow fun 🤣
I also have been testing the older decks against this new op meta. While Yvetal works against decks weak to Dark Pokemon its just not strong enough against other decks. However, there is one older deck that is still strong enough to achieve at least a 50% win rate against this modern meta --- and that is a Night March deck modified using Ditto as the main hitter. All other decks I have tested simply do not have the power to one or two shot these modern op Pokemon.
Yo Tricky I would love to see some table top or even ptcgo content of old style matches like your land bats deck Vs a similar era deck? Would be great content 🙏❤️
I've been still thinking about this myself with the Mega Mewtwo (Y) EX deck with Garbodor. Good thing MewtwoVSTAR is very similar for me to keep the dream alive.
It’s awesome seeing this. Love it when players get creative to attempt to melt the current meta, I play lugia as well but it was refreshing to see this.
It’s sad that JR had to both heavily misplay and dead draw in the lugia game in order for yveltal to win. And that’s with you picking the best possible counter play from the last 10 years. I think a control deck from some era probably has the best chance
loved this video, it makes me feel nostalgic if when I started playing this game that I love. it sucks that this type of content won't be able to be made after transitioning to ptcgl, since they don't have expanded format cards in there
So, the real power creep has been on Pokemon health and damage? Yeah, sounds about right. lol Honestly, this just showcases how awesome Galarian Weezing is right now, and it hurts because he is going SOOO soon! That new ability lock Klefki or whoever will help...but he is smaller and doesn't stop Lugia at all. I just hope the weird Lugia Strike Box is nowhere near as oppressive...
It's not about the numbers. People always talk about the HP. But that only matters within a format. The HP and damage in-format is fine. The power creep is in the utterly insane amount of set up that we can do right now. All the top decks are crazy consistent and set up basically turn 1/2 and then that pretty much decides the game. Aggro is GOD and there's not much you can do about it. Yeah there's a few pseudo control decks around but rarely do they ever see real success. Everyone lost if when Mewtwo V-Union almost was good because holy shit, it was something that lasted more than 3 turns.
@@20eyesmisfit I don't think it's a lack of balance even, truthfully. Part of it is how long its been since a rotation, I mean we still have base set SWSH in the game. There's an over abundance of tools. We're seeing part of what happened to expanded, there's more than enough cards to just always have everything you need to just floor it and kill the other guy. Limited card pools force different tactics. But they also just need to hold back on printing so many OP abilities. Genesect V is the stupidest card I've seen in years. Whoever thought that was okay needs to have their head examined. Same With Arceus Vstar. And the Shady Dealings family was also just WAY too good. The game was never meant for us to have access to our entire deck on turn 2.
loved these, hope you do this again. throw in the V guard energy if you do this with Yveltal again lol. Garb as "toxic" as it felt might of been would bring some stabilization to this meta that is overpowered.
The comment about mew v itself not being a problem just the vmax brings me the question if all the v pokemon didn't evolve how much different the format would be
I wish people would use the more appropriate term of "toxicity" instead of meta it's a way more honest description of most any competitive game.Notice how that word isn't used in actual sports competitions...
Idk who won yet, I’m in college so I can’t watch yet, but I just wanted to say if it doesn’t win then I’d be interested to see you take yveltal ex on its own and try building a deck around it using cards only from the current standard, just to see if it can compete in the current format using the current cards (sorry if this makes no sense, I’m bad at getting my point across lol)
Nothing like cards that don't let the opponent play the game, those will always be good! Also with a sprinkle of max elixir, float stone, vs seeker, shaymin EX...😂
It's funny because what this really shows is the reverse power creep when it comes to abilities and trainer effects.
I think that's a really interesting concept, taking good decks from different formats and putting them against each other. Would love to see more of this
This is why I love expanded, sometimes a deck from the olden days comes along and gets an unexpected win against your newer deck.
@@CommunimateANIMATIONS not at pokemon live hahahahahahhahaha , youwelcome to make you process it
this isnt a new concept, magic players have been doing this kind of thing for years now.
@@alexnas9634 No one said it was a new concept
Garbotoxin is like a cockroach. You think you’ve defeated it, but it keeps coming back
And there's usually more than 1.
Tell me about it

Seismitoad and the Toad Bats deck 😩 🙏
“VS Seeker, Lysandre, Game”
Spinning turn for 40
Night march for 400 on your mega ray
Pot of Greed for 2 additional cards.

Joltik does hit both Lugia and Lumineon for weakness, but Raikou and Stoutland are huge problems
@@Kaleidophoenix I realized after I sent this that Joltik can just smash over Lugia pretty easily, that might actually not be the worst matchup. But Mew with Lost City would probably be a death sentence for the deck, the prevalence of the lost zone would be very hard to account for

TBF if your opponent wasn't so incompetent by not knocking out Garbodor when it had the chance then it would have been a one sided game.
Yea that “win” has a huge asterisk
Fans " mew is to OP"
Pokemon company with Lugia in their hand " oh you haven't seen op yet"
We just nearly begun to show you strength
Mew is better. I have a wayyy higher consistency Mew deck
Really nice work on this video, Andrew!
I've been waiting for something like this. Old decks vs new decks; who will rip each other to utter shreds
I enjoyed that so much! It was hilarious honestly. Thank you
she wasn’t lying that star can summon
I would like to see Toad Shaymin from Trump Card format against Lugia :)
this this this please
Excellent video!
Very funny
You could make a 2nd part with same deck but updated with modern trainers, to evolve on 1st turn or something like that

I never thought of it before, but you could probably do a cross banlist cup sort of thing with pokemon.
It’s awesome seeing this.
Love it when players get creative to attempt to melt the current meta, I play lugia as well but it was refreshing to see this.
That laugh when Mew VMAX got knocked out 😁😁😁

I saw you at Orlando. What deck did you play?
what's the song you played at the beginning when you were loosing to Lugia called?
Man, Yveltal ex was my favourite card back in the day. I played in local tournaments with it and it carried me the whole way multiple times
loved this video, it makes me feel nostalgic if when I started playing this game that I love. it sucks that this type of content won't be able to be made after transitioning to ptcgl, since they don't have expanded format cards in there
Using floodgates to allow older and slower strategies to compete, where have I seen this before....
(Glances at Mystic Mine)
I miss those full art double stadiums
20:11 i need this deck on live😂
How do you think this match would play out with the old supporter rule from when this deck was meta
I wanna see my old fav meta deck
Seismetoad EX/Shaymin go up against lost box!
Damn, Garbodor w/ Garbotoxin. I've had nightmares started with THAT CARD. That thing is just simply nasty and potent
But can it beat Lost Box?
@Tricky Gym! Love to see you do a video with Dusknoir 062/172 from Brilliant Stars, can move any amount of special energy as often as you want!
Love this video concept!!!
Very cool concept
I can't believe he hasn't tried Rapid Strike Jumpluff. That's probably the best single prizer deck to beat Lugia and Chansey
i know it wouldn't fair well, but I want to see lugia vs a haymaker deck
I think it would be interesting to use the pokemon from older rotation, but add new trainer cards.
Garbodor/Seismitoad would probably be a harder matchup for Lugia.
Wow. X and Y are as old now as Red and Blue were when Diamond and Pearl came out... I feel so old
Great video Andrew👍

Great games dude! As a "mature" age returning to the game I am really appreciating your videos, Cheers
This vid is awesome man ahaha
The good all days were 200hp was impressive
Powercreep hasn't EVER been required to sell ANY game OR show.
Dread it. Run from it. Garbodor arrives just the same

YES YES YES
I mean if you play it enough you’re eventually going to get a perfect game.

GardviorGX still pawns
Isn't Shaymin banned because of scoop up net lol

what a beautiful card
Yea I’m gonna put an asterisk on that win vs Lugia. Opponent really wasn’t thinking by not knocking out Garbo.
It was game over then lol
Not in Magic, cards gets progressively less and less powerful there. They don't even reprint Lightning Bolt anymore
Yeah, magic has a weird curve where things are mostly less powerful. But, then we get things like questing beast, ragavan, or smothering tithe.
Bravo!
Bruh…. MegaManectric/Yveltal would be better Vs Lugia?
