Anyone who actually has a taste in music will understand that this "drugged up, skinny wreck" is in fact, one of the greatest British musicians, ever. Despite the bad public image, Pete Doherty is an amazing poet cross rocker. He is a real English music icon.
I knew every word of this song, yet until I heard this (originally around 6years ago, and I keep coming back) I never truly appreciated it for the touching, emotional love song it is.
For those who were looking for tabs, I *think* he is playing tuned down a whole step, and has also transposed it down half a step (confusing!) So to play it in standard tuning, the chords would be A E and D for the verses, then A E Fm Bm in the chorus. This sounds about right!
Although I was a big fan of Culture Club, I got so tired of hearing this song as it was so over-played. This version makes a welcome change...Thankyou Peter xxx
Listen i appreciate pete, my idol is LG , but this man is class, enjoy him wile he's here.. better than anything recent and this is drugg up pete 11 years ago and still cooler and better than any modern artists.. geeza, c'mooooon
this is awesome. PLEASE dont cancel the babyshambles gig in MONTREUX!!! ive worked hard to get to see u all. so PLEASE.really. so excited=D lots of love from switzerland!
You see, the fact is we don't know how all these men would have been without drugs. Maybe they would've been even greater than they actually are. Or maybe drugs didn't change anything, and this is how they're meant to be. Peter Doherty is pure genius by the way, I love you Peter.
[Verse 1] Desert loving in your eyes all the way If I listened to your lies, would you say I'm a man without conviction I'm a man who doesn't know? How to sell a contradiction You come and go, you come and go [Hook] Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon You come and go, you come and go Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams Red gold and green, red gold and green [Verse 2] Didn't hear your wicked words every day And you used to be so sweet, I heard you say That my love was an addiction When we cling, our love is strong When you go, you're gone forever You string along, you string along [Hook] [Bridge] Every day is like survival You're my lover, not my rival Every day is like survival You're my lover, not my rival [Verse 3] I'm a man (a man) without conviction I'm a man (a man) who doesn't know How to sell (to sell) a contradiction You come and go, you come and go [Hook]
Aye, don't do drugs with "pals". Always watch who you are hanging about with. You matter as a person, unique as Pete is he was addicted to hedonism as a replacement for love.
if you don't want to deal with the tuning business its verse: Bb / F / Eb / F / Eb / Gm / F chorus: Bb / F / Gm / Cm / Bb / F the "every day" bit is : Eb / Dm / Eb / Gm play that twice but on the second time strum the Gm for one bar and throw in an F. like Eb / Gm/F
thanks for the chord info, I appreciate the assisstance, yeah tuning up and down is a pain, I ll have to learn this one the hard way, oh well , cheers and Pete is a legend
can't be sure that drugs are responsible for their amazing music, one needs to already have an ability in order to be an artist. F.e. even if I took drugs I doubt I would come out with anything worth listening to, that's all.
Aw, Pete's serenading the maids who are picking up the debris from the party. That was so sweet of him, but they could have been a little quieter with those plastic bags.
PETER WOW THE HAIR OK LOOKS GREAT ON U HAPPY HOLIDAYS COME PLAY LAS VEGAS ASAP BE SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON CLEAN AND SERENE U LOOK AND SOUND GREAT 2015 (MEXICO CITY GIG LOOKED AWSOME)...
alrite i give ya great congratulations, for giving it a go, and trying to copy, ya the only Cover, i have heard of this song, that is pretty good.. :) good job. :P
it was my flat in Whitechapel "The Salon” The Coca-Cola wallpaper represented Balachadha, Peter's multi media publishing company which was modelled on Coca-Cola/Columbia. It referenced cocaine use and the hypocrasy of the modern world in which narco dollars feed the international banking system.
I obviously didn't explain myself. I didn't say drugs don't change your perception of things, I'm not dumb and I know they do. What I said is that these artists' greatness and their ability to picture things and put them into art is there even without drugs, and that maybe they would've written the very same music even without the drugs being taken. My english is awful, I'm sorry, I'm not sure this is understandable. Anyways, I didn't say you were wrong, Isaid I agree with you, but that we...
You are right on the button....drugs do not create talent, that has to be innate in the artist....but i think that creative people do (and always have) experimented with mind altering substances because they are open to experiencing all that life has to offer and possibly because deep thinkers do court a slight pessimism because they see things for how they are, its no coincidence that suicide is high among the arts after all alot of great art is based on mortality and loss!!!....but make no mistake peter was talented before the drugs and he is talented after the drugs as we have seen the last year or so...
Drugs, heroin especially, can give a special lucidity that allows you to capture lyrics from dreams almost on demand, but it is a fine balance and eventually nearly everyone goes too far. The fact they are seemingly inextricably mixed with criminality and an underclass behaviour phenomenon means that the drug taking and related activities becomes the unfortunate focal point for both the user and listener or fan. Society loves a spectacle but the music alone should be of most worth. Maybe these artists would have created less popular music without the attached spectacle and thus reached less people, but i think deep down the artistic merit would have been the same, even if formerly drug taking and related behaviours made up some of the lyrical content of the songs. I dont want to believe drugs are intrinsic to artistic endeavours anymore. It is not true just because the media pushes us to worship death cults. It is damaging to the psyche and i am sure hinders many people who could have developed to be notable artists and probably quashed so much burgeoning creativity after the initial honeymoon.
Desert loving in your eyes all the way. If I listen to your lies would you say I'm a man without conviction, I'm a man who doesn't know how to sell a contradiction. You come and go, you come and go. THANKYOU FOR THE FEEDBACK. Peter had returned from a detox in Harrogate that morning.
I knew every word of this song, yet until I heard this (originally around 6years ago, and I keep coming back) I never truly appreciated it for the touching, emotional love song it is.
You never cease to amaze me pete.
I never really enjoyed the song until hearing this version.
i love him...i can understand his problems...being a recovering addict myself
Deleted scene from Trainspotting..
hahahaha :-D
renton himself
How ironic as transpotting was about smack
that's the point... what's ironic about it...
that's why the comparison was made in the first place, so nothing quite ironic.
For those who were looking for tabs, I *think* he is playing tuned down a whole step, and has also transposed it down half a step (confusing!)
So to play it in standard tuning, the chords would be A E and D for the verses, then A E Fm Bm in the chorus. This sounds about right!
so happy he cleaned up
Only Peter can make me dig this song
oh my good god...i love him so much. this video is perfect.
Although I was a big fan of Culture Club, I got so tired of hearing this song as it was so over-played. This version makes a welcome change...Thankyou Peter xxx

What is going on with that guitar to make the G shape sound like a C? Is it tuned 5 steps up? whats going on?
you will find some resolved conversations about that if you scroll down.
