Until 1968, a married Texas woman couldn't own property or start a business without her husband's permission. Although my Mother worked as a teacher, she could not buy a car in her own name, it had to be registered to my Dad. This song was an anthem for the Women's Movement.

I remember all of my little friends and I singing this song on the day we decided to challenge my public school's dress code, along with my mum, who was a teacher at the aforementioned elementary school. Back in the dark ages of the 70's, the female staff and students couldn't wear pants in school, even in winter. So one day quite a few of us kids, and female teachers, just came in nice pants. My mum wanted to make a statement, so she wore a hot pink pantsuit. They yeeted the rule after that. It felt powerful and positive to me as a young girl to know that "🎵 I am woman hear me roar, in numbers too great to ignore..."!

The principal came to my first class of the day and made a big deal out of it. Then I was the first girl to wear a mini skirt! It was a checkerboard print. A teacher came up to me and told me that we don’t wear mini skirts. I told her, you may not, but I do! And I walked off. This experience was bold for me because I was always an introvert. But that soon changed. Then in later life, there was the time I decided to wear a narrow tie(husband’s)with my double breasted suit to friends funeral. I got so many compliments from the other ladies. They said “I would have never thought to do that.” And once I wore a tie with a white jacket. The mayor saw it and wanted it. So, eventually I gave in and gave it to him. And again, I decided I wanted a man’s watch. Hubby tried to talk me out of it. But I told him no. That was all before those two things became a fashion thing. I always said I’m not a follower, I do what I want. If nobody likes it, that’s their problem.

It was passed by the House and the Senate but had to be ratified by 38 states to become an amendment. It was only ratified by 35 states and 50 years later is still not an amendment to the constitution.

I was in my young twenties and participated in some of the "movement" of the time. Participated in a huge "woman's liberation" conference. A very exciting time for me. I'm too old and tired to get into everything going on now, I wish I could. So much has changed, and not for the better. I have a "I AM WOMAN" Sticker I have stuck to one of my things. A constant reminder of where I was and where I am now.

"Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" has a beautiful bridge. ("I Am Woman," like many songs, doesn't have one; just repeats verse and chorus.) "Ain't..." is just a musically inventive song. I write music and find this one of the best songs Helen did because the bridge is like a rest, a pause for the brain...oh, what's this...different notes. Good bridges are hard to write. I'm a child of the 70's and I also remember hearing this song but not really understanding it's importance. My grandpa was one of "those" men. I remember some comments he made. One was "women were put on earth to serve man." He'd say he was kidding, but I question it. He also said that women shouldn't be in the workplace making important decisions! When I told him I was going to law school, I thought he was going to have a stroke! I had to walk away from grandpa! Don't misinterpret this...my grandpa was a great man that provided extremely well for his family's future. My grandma was his Queen and he proved that everyday of their lives! But, that knuckle-dragging, chauvinistic thinking was strong in gramps! I also need to thank all the women from the generation before me for finally taking a stand - the stand that allows me to be in the profession of my choice! From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all!

I was in my young twenties and participated in some of the "movement" of the time. Participated in a huge "woman's liberation" conference. A very exciting time for me. I'm too old and tired to get into everything going on now, I wish I could. So much has changed, and not for the better. I have a "I AM WOMAN" Sticker I have stuck to one of my things. A constant reminder of where I was and where I am now.

It's been a long time since I've heard this brilliant song. It actually brought a tear to my eyes: one of the few songs in our history that had serious importance to the equality movement. This is not just a song--- it's an Anthem.
Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress) is a catchy tune Helen Reddy said she didn't like to perform. Unmistakable voice, beautiful. I did like the movie although Jeff, not so much. He had no idea the rare treasure he had married. So he blew it.
She does a touching job with You and me against the World.

"Peaceful" is a vibe.
"Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" has a beautiful bridge. ("I Am Woman," like many songs, doesn't have one; just repeats verse and chorus.) "Ain't..." is just a musically inventive song. I write music and find this one of the best songs Helen did because the bridge is like a rest, a pause for the brain...oh, what's this...different notes. Good bridges are hard to write. If you're amenable. Thanks for this one, though. I remember how much I really liked Helen. :)

Your next song you should play is her song You And Me Against The World. I loved her music when I was a kid, she was in the original movie Pete's Dragan, it a musical and I fell in love with her voice watching the movie.
I'm a child of the 70's and I also remember hearing this song but not really understanding it's importance. My grandpa was one of "those" men. I remember some comments he made. One was "women were put on earth to serve man." He'd say he was kidding, but I question it. He also said that women shouldn't be in the workplace making important decisions! When I told him I was going to law school, I thought he was going to have a stroke! I had to walk away from grandpa! Don't misinterpret this...my grandpa was a great man that provided extremely well for his family's future. My grandma was his Queen and he proved that everyday of their lives! But, that knuckle-dragging, chauvinistic thinking was strong in gramps! I also need to thank all the women from the generation before me for finally taking a stand - the stand that allows me to be in the profession of my choice! From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all!
I don't know if you have critiqued "Anne Murray" yet she is about the same time period as Helen Reddy. AND she also has a powerful strong unique voice that I would love to hear you give an opinion on Javon.
One of the songs I really love by Anne Murray is called "Cotton Jenny." AND that's one that's special from my childhood.
She also sang the song that I got married too back in 1981. AND that is called "Can I have This dance."

Wow that's a blast from the past.i haven't seen Pete's dragon in decades used to get shown quite a bit in the UK when I was a kid.there wasn't as much TV or films for kids like there is now.

After the success of this song, she ditched her husband who was her manager, because he was taking most of the money and making the decisions. They tried to stop her from releasing this song because they knew it would empower women. she started playing it live and everyone loved it so they reluctantly released it. still a strong message
Many people forget about the equal rights movement for women, this was very popular when I was starting Jr. High School as our country was going thru a big transition.
The anthem of the woman's movement in the 70s it was considered very controversial at the time and many stations refused to play it saying it was a man hating song. Fter today's supreme court leak about reversing roe vs Wade we need to hear it again and again and again. Shame on them.
