He was a maverick. He did all of this before anyone: the situation comedy combining antics Jackie Gleason copied for years. They go from comic confrontations to realistic romantic interaction. I could watch this over and over. Nanette is fantastic. I love Imogene, but each is so different. Nanette excels as his wife, and there is very real chemistry. Thanks!
Jackie Gleason's Honeymooners pre-dated many of these Caesar's Hour episodes with "The Commuters" sketches. This particular episode with all the arguing and then Bob having to admit he was wrong and needed to apologize, in fact, seems to have been inspired by The Honeymooners, not vice-versa.
This was _hilarious_ -- I love it!! As good as Sid is, Nanette really steals the show in this one, imo. I haven't watched many sketches with her yet, and I never knew she could be so funny! I laughed out loud at the way she smiled forcefully while expressing how angry she was and had the angriest possible expression while yelling about having fun! I also love that the episode has a happy ending and that Bob turns out to be man enough to admit he's wrong and apologize after all! :)
These were issues at the time. Husbands would go gaga over young pretty omen dancing wildly. But not their wives! This is a satire on the old double standard. New York suburban writers.... A lot of the skits on Caesar’s Hour dealt with NYC, post WW II area suburban life.
Just realized what should have been obvious at other times with Sid Caesar: When he starts the big forced grins at the ball, he easily could have done a BELA LUGOSI/Dracula impersonation!
Amazingly, even though much of the sketch was not laugh out loud funny (who can carry 13+ minutes of constant funny?) it was, however, at times very funny, and incredibly, as long as it was (especially by today's standards) it was very watchable all the way through. Sadly, even the best sketch artists today cannot do 13 minutes. I am a converted commuters fan!
It's so beautifully orchestrated. The both of them come in on the comic bits from so many different directions and yet they meet each other point by point. - SC said he loved working with Nanette because they had perfect eye contact and response. - His buffo "Now hear this!" speech at the end is glorious. Both of them had lungs! - It's no surprise she was a terrific singer and that he was a great saxephone player.

I laughed out loud multiple times during this one, Joe -- loved it! :D

The ones with Nanette about the white rug, fur coat and lastly the stock market (with Imogene) were outstandingly funny by any standard.
Was the Commuters sketch developed for Caesars Hour only, or did it appear (or something similar) on Your Show of Shows...thanks...
On YSOS, they had the Hickenloopers, which was similar, only with Imogene Cocoa instead of Nanette.
