    Good morning Tom. I play a clarinet you had a little something to do with, a Leblanc Infinité. At 73 years old, and playing since 4th grade, I’m back into it for the last few years. (I even restored my wood Normandy from 1958) and now play daily.
    I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how valuable your instruction has been to me, and I’m sure many others. You’re fine dynamic reed balancing videos have been an incredible help. I wish RUclips was around many years ago since my folks could not afford to pay for instruction. It brings me immeasurable joy and you sir, have been a big part of that. many, many thanks. I hope you keep up the instruction part of your RUclips channel and continued success with your clarinets. The world is a better place with you in it!
    PS- I have noticed your coffee cups… you’re my kind of guy.

    Avid player when I was in school....15 years later and trying to get into the swing of things! I have been "nerding out" for 3 days on reed balancing videos, and loving it!! I wish I would've had youtube videos like this at my fingertips when I was in highschool and doing all my auditions. Now, I'm looking forward to joing a local community band and just being the best musician I can be after not playing for 15 years. I'm just thankful to be a part of something again, and it's videos like this that are inspiring me to come with my best efforts forward!

    AHHHHHH!!!! Thank you so much! I have audition music which i need to play in 3 days and I chipped my good reed! My other new reeds were impossible to play on and so I decided to do some research. I found this video and tried it out. Thanks to you I have a new reed which sounds amazing and I can now play without stressing out so much!!! Wish me luck!

    Fantastic lesson! Hearing the same imbalances that I encounter and have trouble chasing down in my own reed work, appearing in the reed you are working on and having your thinking out loud and applying a technique to address, and hearing the results of the process is so valuable. Thanks!!!

    I think you said that testing is the key to success of any system. So true, especially in the context of our current pandemic.

      practice makes perfect---you have to involve yourself in the process---THERE is where the learning begins.

    Tom, thank you for your clarinet reed knowledge, testing and examples! Can you elaborate on the relationship between the higher notes and how far down the reed you make adjustments? Thanks!

      That depends a LOT on the reed you're working on. If it's very resistance and dead in the lower register some wood will need to be removed. But, for me, that's a last resort. Most of the work I actually do on a reed is from the sides of the middle part of the reed on up. But there are too many variables to say anything specific. You learn this by personally engaging in the process.

    I am watching your sand the reed , are your applying pressure on the "return stroke"? I know that ATG means "Against The Grain" ... but it sure looks like you are sanding in both directions ...? I have an ATG system and only take wood off the reed in one direction, taking care to lift the tool on the return stroke ...

    That finishing tool, the large one, comes with your reed finishing kit?

      Yes, and the smaller tools I have an earlier video showing how to make it!

    Here is a question for you! How does clarinet bell size and shape affect sound? :)

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 4 года назад

      It affects tuning, resistance, and tonal energy and focus.

    Question: Why is your A Flat side key orange?

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 4 года назад

      I'm a Houston Astros fan.
      Plus, I put a layer of cork on the Ab key spatula, and coated it with the material I have for coating shop tools. But mainly, because I'm an Astros fan.
