Thanks for the video! I just grab a rag, sit on the bike, take the dip stick out, hold it upright between my legs and insert the dipstick to get the reading. I know some folks probably can't do it, but if you're physically able, give it a try, it's not as hard as many make it sound. Just move slowly when you're taking the reading 👍

Right on BW.. thats how I do it!

That's exactly what I do. I loosen the dipstick first, then get on, pull and clean the dipstick and then check oil level.

      Yep that's the way.

Best description yet. I measured the oil with a beaker and still couldn't figure out if it was right with the dipstick.

I put mine on the center stand and used a block of wood under the front tire to level the bike up and then checked the oil level. That seemed to be good for me and maybe it helps some others here.

Hey Steve! Thats a good idea on how to level the bike while using the center stand!

Good video, thank you! if you ask me, its over kill. I never put wood under the front wheel. Leveled ground , center stand and check oil by the book. Check the book, that is the only thing they ask to do. I have long legs and so I check it, siting on the bike and keep her upright the best I can. I check like 3 times, real quick. Never an issue. If I take around 110ml out of the last qt, at any oil change, the oil level is always shy from the top stick line. No need to stress ourselves on this issue. Maybe one day, they will simplify this.

after a fresh ol change with 4.9 qtr , I just check the stick for reference and it will show 1/2 way between min and max and that's where I think it should be.

I should say that I just sit on the bike as level as possible and thats my baseline

My dealership (Schroader’s) specifically told me to check oil on the center stand during my orientation session. Putting the bike on a chocked side stand while alone is a recipe for a dropped bike. Once it starts tipping away, there is no stopping it.

The service manual says when checking the oil level, “Centerstand model: Place the motorcycle on the centerstand on a level surface. Non-centerstand model: Place the motorcycle in an upright position.”

Hey BB.. right on.. in the end I just straddle the bike and take the measurement. Thanks for the feedback!

Set your level on the engine rocker cover while you are on it with the tires on the ground, then put it on the center stand, I bet there will not be much of a difference front to back. The center stand would be much closer to level than on a 2x6 still leaning to the left, since you have to check it all the way on the right side of the bike. If the dipstick was in the center of the engine, then it wouldn't really matter.

sitting on the bike did seem an easier solution if you can. I was thinking of centre stand and chocking front or both wheels to reach level

    • @MileHighAdventures

I think that would work if you can level the bike out.

Do you think that Honda engineers were holding bike upright while checking oil or having it on center stands ? 🤣🍻

I just wanted to add a counter point. First, thanks so much for the video. What if the slightly leaned position on chocked sudestand was a little low and not that the center stand was a little high?
Either way the important thing to remember is you can't check it cold or freshly turned off, gotta check it a few minutes after turning off.

Good point Kevin. Gotta remember to warm the engine and then give a few minutes to let the oil settle.

I simply sit on the bike holding it upright. Dip stick is easily reached.

I don't have a GL, but an Indian. I have a WheelDock wheel chock for my bike. Keeps the front wheel secure and on the floor (not a rocker chock). I think your center stand measurement would be good enough, as the manual says...if between the lower and upper mark you are good to go and you were right in the middle. when you measured with the side stand on a 2x6 the measurement went down (obviously...it's leaning left) and the level was still between the marks (albeit lower than center), you were still good to go. Since the motorcycle operates at a vertical position, not a leaned position, I would use the center stand method and just keep the level in the middle. I seriously doubt that with your rear wheel about 2 inches off the ground is going to make any difference compared to if your bike was vertical with rear wheel on the ground. Side to side the levels were way different (on kickstand vs. on kickstand and board), but front to back (on center stand) very negligible. Either way, your video was very good.

MrBigTuna100 suggested what I thought as well. A shim (wedge) piece of wood equal in height to the rear tire being off the ground.

ALL nice vdos EXCEPT for the monotonous music...would be much better without it as the voice n music levels vary considrably, esp. for hphone users. And anyway, we aren't here for the music but the sounds of the bike changing gears on the twisties, uphill n down and your speech !!

I don't understand why Honda don't do the same as Harley and have two measurements on the dipstick, one for side stand and one for centre stand, would make so much more sense!
