I first saw Angelica Jones on the old hit cartoon from the 1980s “Spider-Man and his amazing friends“. I’ve been wanting to hear about the comic version for sometime. Thanks for uploading this!
Much like Harley Quinn for Batman years later, this was a character that was specifically created for a show, but got so popular that she became a regular in the regular universe that she was written in.
That was such a great nostalgic animated show. However i always loved her role with the New Warriors. She was always oftened seen next to Justice
@@markcruz359 yeah, her comic version is so much more flushed out. I was a little kid when Spider-Man and his amazing friends was out. I remember being up on Saturday morning watching the premiere with the episode “the triumph of the Green goblin.“ That’s how far back I go.
that was one of the reasons I signed up for Disney+. Later, though, I ended up buying the whole series on Amazon prime, because they even had the one “banned“ episode called “the Hunt for the red skull.“
Of the three, besides, Spidey, himself, fire star had the most interesting background. And I always found her more interesting than Bobby Drake, a.k.a. iceman. I’m far from romantic, but if she was going to end up with either one of her male teammates, Spidey would’ve been the better choice, even though iceman had known her longer. She was basically Mary Jane Watson, with super powers!
But yeah, I had heard they adapted her to the regular Marvel comics universe, but I’ve never found the time to look her up and see how they did her in the comics. This video was a godsend!

My first exposure to Firestar was Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends from the 1981 series. I have her limited series in my comic collection. Angelica Jones is my favorite character from Marvel Comics. Originally for the show, they were going to add Johnny Storm as the third member, but because of legal issues with the rights of the Human Torch character, NBC created Firestar, and the character became popular.😊🤓
Besides, Spidey himself, she was the most interesting character on that show!

The show was her first appearance, just like how Harley Quinn started on Batman The Animated Series.
She plays a major role in Fall of X right now.
She should have appeared in most of the Animated X-Men shows or in the Ultimate Spider-Man TV Show where we can see her teaming up with Spider-Man again

When I was a kid I loved watching Spiderman and his amazing friends with Iceman n Firestar in the show. I was so disappointed when I found out they really didn't hang out in the comics.

Absolutely underrated. Marvel began to have more red head characters and more characters with pyro powers, so she began to disappear in the background over the age. She use to be Spider-Man best friend, but now he doesn’t even remember him, and instead replace her with Johnny Storm.
She was from a cartoon with Spider-Man and Ice Man. She was so popular on TV they brought her into the comics but she started on the cartoon. That was from the 80s but Spider-Man has been friends with the Human Torch since the 60s in comic books. In fact, she was a replacement for the Human Torch for TV since the show couldn’t use him.
The first story I ever read with Emma Frost in it had her stealing Storm's body. The second had her killing this kid's horse. It makes it very hard for me to sympathize with her under basically any circumstance.
I’m just wondering how anyone could possibly want Scott Summers with someone like Emma.
Glad that she made her way into the comics after her debut on TV.
I live in England so I listen to these every Saturday morning. Great videos man! Firestar holds a special place in my heart cause I had so many episodes of Spider-Man and his amazing friends on VHS Even though I was born a decade after it aired.
I love how she was actually growing up as time went on. I wish more comics did this.

Angelica Jones is one of the most underrated X-Men characters in the late 1980s.
Angel had a hold on me since the first episode of "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends". Despite the "She's an alternate MJ" concept, I thought they didn't do a bad job in fleshing out a history for her. As soon as they started publishing her limited series, I got every issue. To this day I'll still see Emma as a villain no matter what writers try changing. Then she disappeared. I couldn't understand why they dropped a character of such potential. Then, I started picking up New Warriors because she was in it. And as could be guessed, I was NOT a fan of Vance.
I thought getting invited to the Avengers was a well deserved achievement for her and gave her more opportunities to grow from the 13 year old Emma picked up years previous. Unfortunately, life dictated that I couldn't keep up with comics anymore so I missed the entire Runaways arc and everything else in the past 20 years. So happy to see the spotlight land on her.
Firestar was much better than an Alternate MJ because:
-She wasn't arrogant
-She was nice and very down to earth
-Spiderman (& Iceman) could count on her as superheroes
-She could understand Spiderman (which MJ couldn't really do until they were married)
Some could argue that this made Firestar too much of the perfect girl in all of Marvel.
Firestar wasn't an "Ulternate MJ Concept" she was created because of legal issues regarding the name Human Torch whom they were originally going to team with Spider-Man and Ice Man. A bit of serendipity in my opinion 😁

Wow a surprisingly deep character
Some characters go right under the radar and Firestar was one of those for me. Aside from all of the new warriors stuff, I knew NONE of this. I’m glad to watch this because it filled in a bunch of holes for me.
I’m afraid you messed this up. There is a huge glaring omission in this origin story.
Firestar is a character created for television that was later introduced to the comics. She first appeared in a Saturday morning cartoon, “Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends.” She was voiced by actress Kathy Garver (who is best known for playing Cissy on the old sitcom “Family Affair”). Stan Lee himself provided the narration for that show.
The series had originally intended to use Iceman and the Human Torch for Spider-Man’s amazing friends, but the Human Torch was, for whatever reason, not available, so Firestar was created for that show.
She wouldn’t be introduced to the comics until an X-Men comic years later. You got her origins right in the comics, but it’s a huge gaping hole in her origin story not to mention where she really started.
Some things that are different in the comic series were that her powers were an exact copy of Sunfire’s. And that she was retconned to have been a former X-Man, like Iceman.
But the Firestar of that television series is definitely and was intended to be the Firestar of the comics. The name (both superhero code name and real name) are the same. They are both mutants, the appearance, down to red hair is the same and the costumes are identical.
Learn to give constructive criticism without being a total dick.

I remember Firestar from that old 1980s cartoon Spiderman and His Amazing Friends. She was my favorite one in that group. Loved this Firestar Origin video. One of my favorite mutant heroes.

She’s now an X-Man and seemed placed in a good role (hopefully) and a very dangerous one by Jean Grey to infiltrate Orchis and help the mutants in the final battle.
What would have happened if Charles Xavier got to Firestar before Emma Frost could?
It would've played out exactly as it does in the animates series "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends": Became part of the X-Men in her teens, went to the same college as Bobby Drake & Peter Parker, forming their own super team & eventually began dating Peter.
Now, where it would it have gone from there..?
That's an alternate timeline that would be very interesting.

Of course, Firestar's REAL origin....she was created specifically for the cartoon SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS. She was so popular on the show, they created her in the comic books (sound familiar? The SAME thing happened with Harley Quinn!).

Sunfire. He had been part of Giant-Sized X-Men #1. National hero of Japan. There had been a couple of X-Men story arcs where Sunfire and Iceman were involved. First meeting with Colossus's older brother in another dimension, Iceman's rescue of Opal Tanaka from the Cyberai, and Iceman snuffing Sunfire's powers at the atomic level while also piloting the Blackbird.
There also was an issue of a Spider-Man title where he tried to play matchmaker between Bobby and Angelica.
You're referring to Sunfire. He's the Japanese guy that was her love interest, but that only lasted one episode. Back then they rarely did serialized stories in cartoons. Getting back to Sunfire, in order for that relationship to have any staying power he would have to move to New York or she would have to move to Japan.

I thought I heard there was of copyrights and that she belong to somebody else, and Marvel was renting her and planning to purchase her, and it fell through. Somethings similar to DCs Black Bolton. Don’t know if that was a rumor or if it was true, but that’s why I always thought they really didn’t or couldn’t use her or it costed more money to use her. But it’s a shame she is a great character and I think “ Spidey Friends “ 80s Saturday morning cartoon show did wonders for her character, too bad the comics didn’t use her as much !

Plot twist: They're setting her up to be the next incarnation of the Phoenix force.
I only say that cuz we're so obviously into recycling everything these days, entertainment wise.
I mean, could you imagine? Dark Phoenix comes back but this time Jean Grey fights against it. And ultimately Iceman confesses his love but has to use his powers to put out her fire. It's the only way.

I have always love this character. I felt that marvel was treating her like DC treated "Donna Troy" in the past. Should be a lot more powerful. In "The New Warriors" she was crazy powerful. I have felt she should be an Omega in lieu of Alpha.

I believe Firestar was chosen over Fantastic Four Human Torch because of Affirmative Action because there is an African American Superheroe in the comics with the same powers . DC shows Justice League used Black Volcun and Cyborg to fill in diversity at the time .

I'm disappointed that this video only talks about her comic origin - considering she was 100% created for the cartoon Spider-man and His Amazing Friends. Seems like that should have at least gotten a notation before diving into a origins after they adapted her for comics.
