Hello. I don't have or need a riding mower. I don't comment hardly ever on youtube. I had to comment on this video that as others have said, this was one of the best how to do video's I have ever seen. Besides being a great craftsman, you are also a great video producer. Hats off to you sir, great job on the hood and this video!!!

The best description I’ve heard for John Deere hoods are: "They're made of green potato chips and egg shells". For the high price they're charging for their hoods it would be SOOOO much better if they were made of aluminum or some other more durable material rather than brittle plastic. Canoes and kayaks are made of molded polyethylene resins that are strong (they smash into rocks and don't break), light-weight and inexpensive. John Deere needs to get their act together and stop ripping off their customers.

I enjoyed your video. Repairing products verses tossing them out has always been my mantra. Being raised in an environment (and time) where we had to fix things, I learned a lot from my dad and uncle. And I can never remember calling out a professional to fix anything. We just couldn't afford it.
Anyway, I have a JD 790 sub-compact tractor where the hood spyder cracked and would not close properly. It's metal so the repair was done with my MIG welder but there are several cracked plastic parts where I am goint to try out the staple idea and I am going to purchase the tool through your suggestion below. I appreciate the sharing of your work as well. Keep the videos coming.

@@baldeagle242 Call me crazy, but I really try to keep my 2011 John Deere Lawn Mower D110 as clean as possible. During the mowing season I use air to blow my mower off after each use. Then, when I put it up over the winter, I hand wash it. I've been thinking of waxing the hood and body. However, what type of wax or protector you recommend? I did see a polish at the JD dealership, but it seemed a bit expensive to me. Any recommendations on a wax or polish I might find at my local Walmart. Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Thanks for your hints and tips. I didn't know fiberglass resin would stick to polyethylene, long term (unless these hoods are polystyrene). If they are polystyrene, they could be glued. Polystyrene is used in scale models.
I went through a nightmare, years ago when I tried to paint a car top carrier.
I tried all manner of plastic paint kits and technologies and even tried to corona treat my car top carrier hood. The paint just would NOT stick to the polyethylene no matter what I tried (and I tried many methods). The wax in polyethylene makes it tough but resistant to paint.
I'm glad you were able to find a way to reinforce your repairs to these hoods.

Great repair job. I like the “stitches” you put in with the heating tool. Adding the fibre glass too will make it very tough, so it’s unlikely to crack there again. I would say that the repair is stronger than the original material. You made it look nice under the hood by painting - even though it’s out of sight. I like that attention to detail. Although it would not improve the strength, a little resin along the crack on the top side would fill in those little cavities and improve it cosmetically, before a coat of paint and polishing. The polishing made a dramatic improvement to the appearance - well done.

Your method will work and it will last for the long haul. Roughing the underside and cleaning before is the secret to keeping the epoxy from turning loose. Adding your staples is great! I've been working with fiberglass for 50 years and never had any pop loose when your best practices are followed. Other methods are good, but are IMO a bit overboard for hood repair on a mower. I watch another mower hood repair vid like yours and on that recommendation, I got one of those wire staple heater repair kits, even though I don't have any mower hoods to fix. I just have, like almost everybody, lots of plastic things that crack and need repair. My first trial was a tricky one, my wifey had some thin clear plastic probably acrylic plexiglass-type cutting templates like quilters use. They are only about a little less than 1/8 inch thick, like maybe 3/32ths(2.5 mm). Two tricks I thought of to help with thin plastic where the project is totally flat. One is that I put an aluminium cookie sheet in the freezer and set the cracked plastic on it with before melting the staple into the crack. This makes pushing all the way through less likely. The other is to pulse the heat, so the staple is just hot enough to barely melt in. If the wire is red hot, it will burn the plastic somewhat, and be ugly if it's clear, and probably not be as strong. and easier to control the penetration. A third trick, as I wasn't super happy with the cutoff wire cutter's ability to make a flush cut. I just took an old, chipped and essentially useless ceramic knife and scored the wire staple tails off very flush to the surface. Then they are super easy to bend back and forth and break at that score. I just keep that ceramic knife in the staple repair kit now. Almost no sanding was needed. If you plan on fibeglassing the crack, some tails would probably be useful to improve the tooth for the resin and fiberglass to grip to.

Very good repair idea. Will look into the hot welder. ALSO, if your crack has not yet traveled from edge to edge, try drilling a small hole at ends of crack to stop further cracking & then maybe repair over hole? I've done this with softer plastic and sheet metal to stop cracking but never on a hood like your JD. Just a suggestion, as I'm not sure of results especially the repair of any drilled holes. Great video, thanks.

I used to repair fiberglass hoods on semi trucks. The guys would crash into things and rip the whole left side fender off over the the steer tire. I would sand everything down clean and wipe the pieces with a wax remover cleaner. Bolt the hood together temporally. Then get fiberglass cloth and resin mixed up. I used 1/2 inch garden hose or 3/8 inch fuel tubing triple wrapped in fiberglass cloth. I used this for the curves and contours in the fenders to add strength. None of my repairs ever broke again from vibration. Plus the hose trick was underneath the hood the repairs were not noticeable. The glass wrapped around the hose did not add much weight compared to the whole hood. But it was a lot stronger after I was finished. Small hose wrapped in glass would work for your hood. You could add it to the inside edge. I am not sure how well epoxy will stay bonded to your hoods material. Have a great day.

I learned the hard way on my LX277. Do not raise up the hood from the back center as it appears it is made to do or the hood will split right down the center. I replaced the hood shell and now I always raise it up from the back of the side vents. The new hood has now been going for almost 20 years. THEN I bought a X390 and pulled up too closely to a chain link fence facing the fence. Somehow the hood hooked a link in the fence and the side panel snapped beyond repair. Fortunately on these new hoods there are three pieces and I only had to replace the left panel. If you ever have to replace one of these panels get someone to help you! I didn't have any help available and it is a nightmare to hold it all together. I finally used welding clamps padded with shop towels. I also put on a grill guard at the same time. I didn't do this originally because you have to pull two pins to lower the guard to open the hood to just check the oil.

Well, better late than never. I'm still catching up on your previous uploads and this one got my attention, specifically about those plastic hood latches on each side. Luckily through my ten years of ownership I never even tried lifting the hood from the center. I always bear hugged it and spread the hood apart a bit and then lifted it. What PITA that is/was. Only today did I do your nifty little trick about removing the latch on the passenger side and then reversing it and reinstalling it. BRILLIANT! I never get rid of any parts that I've removed but when I try and find them at a later date, I can never find them. At least not when I need to. This" trick" if you will really helps me because I keep my X324 on a permanently mounted battery tender in the engine bay and hooked up in the winter in that I have my snow blower attached to it now, so when I need to go out to start removing the snow, I have to open the hood and disconnect the battery tender from my electric outlet. Now all I need is some snow to get out there quick and start working. Not really, in that I won't mind if we don't get any snow this winter but that will never hapen living here in the Ice Box of NJ. 🤣 Stay safe when mowing or snowing and thanks again for all your tips and tricks.
One last thing. I upgraded my headlights to LED's and even they're brighter than the factory bulbs, they just don't seem bright enough. I'm thinking I've got to remove the lens and will have rewatch your video on this subject, but it looks like I'm going to have to be real cautious doing it. I trust I can do it without removing the hood, or should I remove it? Thanks in advance for any helpful hint you can supply me with.

JD needed to put some reinforcing ribs in that hood section, and the "ears" on the bottom by your feet when sitting in the tractor. One quick repair is super glue (old airplane repair trick). Tape it like you did, then liberally squirt super glue on and around the crack, then sprinkle baking soda (yes baking soda) over the super glue. It will set up almost instantly. The repair will hold; mine has been good for a few years but I am planning to grind it off and do a repair with staples and glass now, plus put some ribs in to help reinforce that flimsy hood. One of the reasons these things crack is that the polymer/hydrocarbons in the polycarb eventually volatilize and oxidize. Periodically I wipe the hood down with coconut oil. Works on a boat, works on the JD plastic. It will keep it more plastic than brittle.

Great job introducing that tool and how to use it. I saw a repair done by that means one time and was astounded by the way it was done. Seeing the whole kit i action is inspiring ,since the system is so flexible. Portable. My old BMW has that sort of panels . My JD has definitely got a fibreglass bonnet though I'm sure. It's a full size tractor th.

Brilliant idea about repositioning the latch and it's great to know that there's a way to repair those hoods. People who collect broken mowers that have a blown engine or rusted out deck usually will sell the hood for $50 or so.

Cool. That tool with the little metal inserts was awesome, I’ve never seen that before. You could also use a plastic welder and you can use the Apoxsee on top of the hood to fill those debits as well and fill the crack and that will make it stronger and is Sandobal. You can also take a believe baking soda and superglue and make a paste and fill those cracks and sand it and get a very smooth service that was paintable

Bought this tool to repair my Toro Wheelhorse hood that had lots of serious cracks after 25 years of use. The tool worked exactly as shown. Saved myself a lot of money compared to a replacement hood.
