Shane, this one is OUTSTANDING!!!! A GREAT career in comedic news clearly awaits you! The DCPS News Network is waiting to be launched! Again, we’ll done!!!!
I'm one of those people Shane referred to. Never even considered Pearl due to that gawd awful tom arm. But... that new gyrolock L arm is sheer brilliance. Thanks so much for what you guys do for the drumming community. Fantastic video and I could listen to Tom noodle around a kit all day. Thanks again for what had to be a ton of work!
Thanks DCP staff for the incredible buying experience this July! I want to especially thank Max. He was extremely pleasant and helpful while letting me test all the different cymbals I was looking for! To all my fellow drummers, it's so worth paying DCP a visit! I'd also like to thank Shane to take some time out of his day to show me around the place! I can't wait to visit again soon!
I gotta say, the old Tom arms make a high end kit look entry level. That’s always been my concern because most entry level kits use those style of Tom arms. Having said that, it has been one of my biggest selling points on Pearl as they may look old and cheap, but they’re as reliable as a Swiss watch, which is why today, my Ludwig Classic maples use Pearl Optimounts with those Tom arms!!! Love the sounds of those new kits!!!
I have ludwig drums and pearl drums, I have sonor drums, I put optimounts on all the toms and use the same hardware for which ever kit im using, I love the old tom arms, don't think I'm gonna change to this. the new drums sound great.
Thank you. I was excited to watch that video. Very pro again. The new stuff from Pearl sounds awesome. I am a Pearl guy since 1990. Colors, hardware, the new L-rod, just wow! Thanks for that pro video again!
As a long time lover of Pearl Drums, I’ve never had a problem with the old Tom arm and still use it to Mount toms on my drum rack. Pearl is moving with the times with the new gyrolock L arm system. The new kits sound and look amazing. Great review Shane and team.
Pearl is giving serious competition to Tama with hardware ergonomics and durability. Tama was well known and respected for their tom arms and all over hardware sensibility. Good to see pearl joining the game.
Guys the intro was hysterical! Was never much of a fan of Pearl and I think the tom arms had a lot to do with it. These new tom arms look to work great. In the head-to-head the Maple MM6 seemed to sound the best overall, but all the kits sounded amazing. I want to get another foot pedal and the Demon looks like one to check out. Shane had told me he loved this pedal, and I can see why. Thanks for another fabulous video.
Good googly moogly! That first kit... the floor tom had such a booming resonance, and the rest of the kit had me in tears. Tears of joy!! Wow! Pearl just keeps getting better and better. Color me Emerald Green Sparkle with envy!! 😂
The maple gum is the one I preferred the most, but the snare drum of the last one, I think it was the reference kit is the one I thought sounded the best. I have been playing Pearl for 35 years now, and I like their gear, tom holders are not a problem for me. I play with a combination of different series for my practice and recording kit, they are all 6 plies of birch, in 10 12 14 16 and 22x16 in sheer blue lacker finish, and for live I have a cristal beat acrilic kit, same size shell, in red. I play with pearl pedals and stands too. I like their products.
Agreed. If they had the old lugs it would have made them “perfect” to my eyes. I need a new kit, and will still consider them as a high contender, the small lugs just look a little cheap to me
Great intro! 😂 Yeah, the Reference One looks the most beautiful, but when it comes to the sound my choice would be the Maple/Gum all the way. But then, I play Gretsch drums, so that would be a given 😅
I like the masters maple. All maple shells speak to me. I too enjoy seeing either sparkles or glitters; whichever terminology said drum company figures to name most shiny and light reflective. 🥳
WOW, ...the production time into this video (and all of your videos, really) has to be super extensive! Thanks! Individually, I thought they all sounded great. But head to head, at the end of the day, the Maple/Gum just has it all (for me!) The new tom arm is really impressive as well. And that intro?! LMAO!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
That finish on the Reference One is a stunner! In terms of sound, you can't go wrong with any of these. I may be partial to the Reference One once again. Mahogany adds a lot of richness to the bigger sized drums, at least to my ears.
Thanks for the demo, guys! In the future, could you demo the toms and the kick with the snare wires off? Really helps me to understand the true tone that I'm getting with the drums. Thanks!
First of all, I've always been a closet Pearl fanatic, and these kits sound exceptional. I'm glad to see that Pearl has made the wise choice to move away from the 7/8" pipe mounts. Big, bulky, tubular holders just don't work well (remember Ludwig's Modular holder?), and this is a definite GREAT move, plus the new holder has great features. Great video!
Reference One and Masters Maple Pure are my new dream Kits followed closely by the Maple Gum and Maple MM6 last but still would be considered hahaha ! Amazing work at Pearl for the new line
Played many Pearl kits over the years. Moved away and into Gretsch few years ago. But these all sound great. Very surprised by the reference kit. Thanks guys!
Man Shane your staff Especially tony could easily be a first call drum tech. Tunings are so consistent and always sound great. No easy feat. I've always loved Pearl. Clunky tom arms and all. The iss mounts were not great I'll admit. I had a two year deal with Pearl back in my "pro days" and even the mid line vision kits at the time were solid drums. These new high ends are noice. Love the maple gums. Kicks are insane. Thanks guys.
This really is a great, comprehensive and well laid out video for the new lines. Just wanted to say that I had less than zero problems when it came to figuring out their older lineup. I just looked at the website. What I find funny is that, after ordering my maple complete and waiting almost a year for it, Pearl announced their overhaul a month after I got my kit! Brand new and instantly outdated! Ha
Great video, very entertaining. Pearl are back in the game with higher end drum sets I see/hear. For me, only through tradition, I'd choose the MMP, it did shade it for me with the projection compared to the others and I was totally surprised by how good the reference one compared with the others considering it's completely different shell materials. Again great video and some killer groove's.
I have a studio select and the Tom arms are Tom arms. They hold up the Tom’s, never had a problem with them breaking or anything. I mean they’re Tom arms? These new Pearl kits in the video sound amazing.
I always loved the Pearl tom arm. Growing up in the UK in the early eighties we really only had a choice of Premier drums and the occasional Ludwig, the Pearl tom arms were some of the first to not collapse. My first Premier kit was fitted with Rogers swivomatic tom holders that were constantly cutting my knuckles, besides having the toms sink. Another Premier tom holder was just one stripped thread after another, as well as the ball mount losing functionality after the tightning screw would scar up the actuall ball. Even the Ludwig L arms always had missing wingnuts and had been replaced by bolts. I think it is a testament to the Pearl tom arm that it was around for so long. Pearl really made all of the other manufacturers get their act together with not only Tom Holders but hardware in general, in the early Eighties. I got my Pearl Export in 1986 and remember bring thrilled that I could finally have toms that were not going to collapse.
This “gyro lock” was a part of Yamaha kits of the eighties, they wear out and don’t last. I loved my BLX22 D5 kit I bought in 89 I still have it and still use the free float snare for playing out. I also have a Masters from the era around 2005 Have to say I’m not a fan of the smaller Tom’s of kits of today, more of a fan of deeper larger Tom’s. My BLX kit has perfect tone and control and my Master kit still sounds as great as the day I bought it. Thanks for the video!
You guys are hilarious!! LMAO. Best drum store and channel. wish you had a location(s) in Canada 🇨🇦 BTW I thought Pearl’s tom mounting sucked. Seems they’ve addressed that somewhat.
Wonderful sets. My first one, that my father got me when I started studying drum it was a Pearl. I remember I didn’t like that much cause I wanted a premier. I see how much progress was made by pear over the decades.
Starting at 2:49 in this presentation, I agree. I wish Mapex would follow this idea instead of cheaper and cheaper offerings, when they build good high drums. The problem is, Mapex doesn't offer much for choices or variations in the high end. They seem to offer laquer and wraps, but not enough offerings with the types, variations in wood, thickness, bearing edges, hardware or other. They also have to get parts and accessories to be readily available. Anyway, back to Pearl for the video.
Lmao! Great intro!😂 To be honest I don’t even look at Pearl kits. Their high end stuff ain’t that visually appealing to me. But I’m here seeing if that will change! 🤟🏼
Going to up grade my MMX kit with the new suspension mount and gyro lock. I hated the old style pearl Tom arms because I could not position the drums the way I could with my other kits off the “ virgin” kick drum.
19:58 Shane saw the rear end of the kit and his jaw dropped. Nice rear end Pearl. Also, while I appreciate Pearl, finally and greatly improving their tom arms, saying not only did they improve, but they improved to the best is an overstatement. I’ve yet to find anything that beats a Tama starcast mounting system. The appearance, the durability, the quick tom release switch and the limited Vibration are all absolutely perfect with Tama
Didn't realize so many people hate the old Pearl tom arms. they make it really easy to tune your heads as the drum just spins around from batter to reso without removing it....
Agreed! The only issue I have had is I play offset rack toms (left bass drum mount + one between my hats and the BD mounted tom. With this configuration it’s tough to get the Tom’s where I want them. I think the L mount might give me that extra inch over the bass drum I’d like.
Thank you for calling out the double tom stands. They always were just the triple clamp with one of the three sides clamped to a stand, so it was never centered. Not to mention the actual gripping area is the vertical width of that clamp. When you look at Ian Paice's kit, and he has two of them spaced out to properly hold the auxiliary rack toms, that tells you something. Now if they would only offer a centered triple mount like the Yamaha TH945B. I use two on my kit to mount my Pearl toms and a mini cymbal boom in the third.
Shane that intro dude was hilarious! 🤣🤣 especially putting in Van Damm from Bloodsport 1988, remember it like it was yesterday, my uncle came from Vancouver to England where I grew up snd we rented Bloodsport 1988. Not long after I got a drum book with a Pearl kit on it and loved it. Great ro see Pearl has now changed the arm! Yes!! 🤘🤘 keep groovin' the passion, just don't put on van damms leotards 🤣🤣
Shane, this one is OUTSTANDING!!!! A GREAT career in comedic news clearly awaits you! The DCPS News Network is waiting to be launched! Again, we’ll done!!!!
I’m dying 😂😂😂! Nicely done fellas!
That Masters Maple Pure in low tuning is just jaw dropping... My god!

Our pleasure! Thank YOU James!

Awesome video with the head to head. It manages to be informative but also very funny. The opening sketch with the JCVD split was priceless!
Thanks Chris
Thank you. I was excited to watch that video. Very pro again. The new stuff from Pearl sounds awesome. I am a Pearl guy since 1990. Colors, hardware, the new L-rod, just wow! Thanks for that pro video again!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That MM6!! Best to my ears.
That AD deserves an instant like! I'll carry on watching the video now.. 🤣
As a long time lover of Pearl Drums, I’ve never had a problem with the old Tom arm and still use it to Mount toms on my drum rack.
Pearl is moving with the times with the new gyrolock L arm system.

Okay, that's why I'm subbed to this channel; their skits are superb! xD
Thanks so much!
Another great video by Shane and his crew! I have always loved Pearl drums.
All the bass drums sound fantastic! 🤘🏻
We definitely agree!
Great sounding drums, all of them!
Guys the intro was hysterical! Was never much of a fan of Pearl and I think the tom arms had a lot to do with it. These new tom arms look to work great. Shane, I don't know how you kept a straight face, but this is a classic!
Good googly moogly! That first kit... the floor tom had such a booming resonance, and the rest of the kit had me in tears. Tears of joy!! Wow! Pearl just keeps getting better and better. Color me Emerald Green Sparkle with envy!! 😂
The first kit is very similar to a MRX; actually the 7.5mm maple shell goes back to the early 80s.
@@SebCo77didn’t Jeff Porcaro help bring them into the limelight?
Best intro EVER! I look forward to all your videos but this was a fabulous video.
Another great and informative vid, guys. And love the humour. Look forward to your next instalment!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Shane and Gang. My Favorite is the Reference One. 😎🎉🥁👍
Best intro ever for one of your videos! Love it guys
The Reference One kit is my fave with the MM6 a close second. Now if I could get the Reference in that beautiful blue sparkle finish!!!
Outdone yourselves you have. This is the kind of hard hitting journalism we need in the drum world. Laughed my ass off on a Weds morning. Well done
Wow! great sounding drums!
Great video!
And great tuning!
Love that Maple/Gum!!!
The maple gum is the one I preferred the most, but the snare drum of the last one, I think it was the reference kit is the one I thought sounded the best. Nowhere else can you find such detailed info on these brads and from a drummers perspective. You guys are doing the lawd's work, thank you so much!
Played the Masters Maple MM6 as a backline this month. Sounded great.
Those maple/gum drums sound unbelievable.
You guys are killing it! That introduction was outstanding 👏
Thank you!
I really liked the Reference bridge-style lugs! I'm sad to see them discontinued.

Great video ! I learn a lot watching your videos about drums ! Bravo ! 😊👍
the finish on the reference one! holy sh... I always had blue sets, so I especially love this one. beautiful
Your Videos are getting better and better and better...
Thanks so much!!
Im a simple guy. I see a new DCP video, I click , I like

That finish is really something else!
Not a fan of foreign drum companies. But l admit these
kits look and sound cool.

Thanks Al!

I need that maple gum kit, unbelievable sound and unbelievably beautiful❤️
best intro ever!!!😂😂😂
Not a dud kit among them. That's unusual for me to love every single kit in one of your videos. But, it's true. Every kit just wows me.

That maple/gum kit is unbelievable.

The Maple Gum always just sound right to me.. That finish on the Reference one is nice! Kobalt Fade?
Love these new masters, the maple pure tone is unreal.. pity i wont ever be able to afford them
AWESOME VIDEO !!!!! I love Pearl Drums but I can't afford their insane Pricing on their High End Gear. It's doubled in the last 20 years. DOUBLED.
Further highlighting why Pearl is making the best drums in the business! High quality top to bottom!
I like the sound, of that gray and the blue ones myself.

Huge Thumbs up to Pearls addition of an L-arm! The Masters Maple tuned high is killer!
😂 you guys have waay too much fun out there
Maple Pure for the win! 4ply+4ply reinforce rings just have a great low(birch quality) tone to them with great attack and short decay!
MAYBE the best Peal drum kits I have ever heard!!!
That’s interesting! I always liked Pearl because of the Tom arms.
i was about to give up on this video until you brought out the maple gum in that diamond blue or whatever its called. it sounds closer to what i like
19:58 Shane saw the rear end of the kit and his jaw dropped. Nice rear end Pearl. Well done! Just one question, what heads were on the kits? Coated ambassadors? Maybe I missed the part of the video where you mentioned it? Thanks!
Coated smooth white emperors on the toms!
Thank you for calling out the double tom stands. They always were just the triple clamp with one of the three sides clamped to a stand, so it was never centered. When's the Deep Redburst #886 Maple Gum set going to be available? Not seeing this color anywhere
The Maple/Gum is great!
On the Maple/Gum lower tuning: I wish I heard more drum rolls from the toms. Thxs
What cymbal stands/arms are the curved ones? Love the look
When will you be demoing Pearl's Professional Series Maple line?
If I knew these were coming I would have waited.
Shane that intro dude was hilarious! 🤣🤣 especially putting in Van Damm from Bloodsport 1988, remember it like it was yesterday, my uncle came from Vancouver to England where I grew up snd we rented Bloodsport 1988. I could have sworn I watched this yesterday
One of my main reasons for not getting pearl drums was that I hated that Tom arm. This is great to see the change
Would you guys do a video comparing the different snares pearl has with these new kits
Masters maple MM6 low tuning!! Holy cow
Maple/Gum for me. Love that tone
😂 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ left speechless (intro) lol oh man
