Dead wrote the lyrics to this the same day he suicided. He died alone, obscure and relatively unknown, thinking he would be forgotten about entirely. He had no idea how iconic and influential his life and work would become. I hope he’s at peace.
@samael Not sure. Plenty of the material for DMDS was written well before Dead killed himself, Necro leaving and Euro being murdered. It's certainly one of the most iconic bass lines in BM, and Necro nails it.

We all know the studio version had a lot of complications and took forever to get out. They had time to rework some songs for Alive, and it definitely paid off; gotta agree with you. Attila really seems to have found his voice in a more solid way. The two guitars work super well, and everything else just sounds less muddy, and clearer. This is the definitive version; I absolutely believe this.
I dont think any other Black Metal band can get on Mayhem's level. These guys have been around since a long time and everything they've done so far has not been beaten. Great singers, excellent guitarrists and bassists, an outstanding drummer that has pretty much everything, an obscure and sinister theme, and one of the most controversial histories a band can ever have. Mayhem is simply flawless.

I find these lyrics to be so powerful. When you know who dead was the more you can piece together the meaning and context behind his words, I find the last part so heart breaking. "What you found was eternal death, no one will ever miss you" it sends a shiver up my spine
I can really compare black metal (especially Mayhem) with classical music (I love both genres). Both try to make an atmosphere and they mostly do it perfectly. Mayhem really make their music feel dark, they want you to experience what true fear is, which was Euronymous's intention in the 90's. For me black metal is always something which makes you feel like you are not on this world and, wether it would be death, alternative universes, Hell and something mythical. It's undoubtably art.

I have heard few Mayhem songs, because of my beliefs, but i am pretty sure, as a experienced metalhead (i consider that myself, after almost 15 years listening extreme metal) that this is their best song. And maybe this is the definition of black metal, cause this song particularly, has the black metal sign: a very dark ambient, lyrics expressing the deepest feelings of a human, desperation, loneliness, sorrow, death thoughts. The musicianship is on top, agressiveness at it's peak. Brutal drums, fast and accurate guitars charged with anger and hate, structured solos, a brilliant and beautifully loud bass, and the lost-mental-doomed voice of Csihar, paying respect to Dead's memory. An absolute masterpiece i enjoy ocassionally, when i feel bad. It gives me strenght to continue with my long journey to death.

Not really. This is the best track Mayhem has ever composed. Lyrics are absolutely amazing. Riffs and solo are otherworldly, bass line is supreme, Attila is at his very best here, just like Hellhammer. This is Mayhem's greatest moment.

Where are the others of which you speak? Cause the only one I can see are the European/US Legions and Live In Marseille and those were all released in 2001.
I didn't but since there has been live recordings after Mediolanum I didn't have it on here. There hasn't been anything new since at least 2001, and that's too damn long time! And those live albums at that time are pretty much the same, and in very shitty condition. Mediolanum is probably the best and and most varied live album they have yet in my opinion.
Prosperity and beauty got me into Black Metal, Quintessence got me into Darkthrone, Bartzabel into Behemoth, Exercises in Futility V into Mgła and this beauty into Mayhem!

You still have to play every individual note yourself, so there's no cheating involved. Also, from the views we get throughout the video, looks like he has electronic pads, not triggers.

If I remember correctly, someone emailed Varg about this song in particular, and he said that he didn't had anything to do with the composition of the bassline for this song.

@@nesageera I think necro wrote the basslines for many songs of DMDS. Varg just recorded them, and added a few riffs here and there. If I remember correctly, someone emailed Varg about this song in particular, and he said that he didn't had anything to do with the composition of the bassline for this song.
