Caleb, I was watching you installing the lock on the door. I saw the care you took to get it right. I am impressed with your work. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you in your work. For you it appears to be more like a vocation. The world needs more Calebs.
When I see flowers where a house used to be, it always reminds me of the people that used to be there. I always think of a grandma that planted them 😊 and you always seem to find the perfect music for what you are doing at the time! So great!
Thank you for appreciating the daffodils. An old farmhouse up the street was torn down last fall and the beautiful deer filled woods surrounding it is currently being divided up to build new homes.💔😢I drove by last week to see a similar patch of daffodils where that old house used to stand. I cried all the way home. ♥️
Heartbreaking.
I remember when the area near the outside of my town was farmland and forest, only about 20 years ago now it’s all homes that look the same and are of debatable quality
Even though the video updates may be fewer, the offer to do windows for Mansard Media sounds like a real Win-Win! You get money to keep fighting your good fight at the CSB House, and you also get to help save another old St. Louis beauty in the process!
I spent my early childhood, in the 1950'2 growing up in Kirkwood when it was brand spanking new. We did a lot of our shopping and sight seeing in the city of St. Louis. I remember learning to skip on a street of Victorian homes. and always wanting to live in one. I am guessing that they were not restored and perhaps cut into apartments. But as a little kid, I saw them as they were not as they are. I'm so happy that you are taking one and bringing it back to how I 'saw' them.
It's always strange to see flowers pop up in vacant lots and areas in rural areas where you see lilacs growing and you know there used to be a house there.
Amazing too that the daffodil bulbs survived the house demolition and digging up of the debris.
I bought a house in Oregon where the same woman had lived for 50 years. The house was built in 1892, and she bought it around 1938. One thing I loved dearly about the house was that every July, the flower garden in front of the porch bloomed red, white and blue. She had to have put some thought into that. There was wisteria beside the porch, and in the back she planted strawberries in half an old iron water heater. Every year in fall the leaves from the plants above it dropped in covering the strawberry plants, and every summer the plants used those nutrients to produce beautiful strawberries. I understand what you mean about the flowers being an echo of the past.
Like my buddy says you can't save the world, you can only take care of your own little plot of land the best you can while you're here.
Those daffodils that regrow each spring to summon the memory of the home they used to decorate are like straight out of a Tom Waits song!
Drove by the house on my way through missouri and completely understand why youre so passionate about it, the house is gorgeous. The whole neighborhood has great bones but it all needs so much love and attention, the church down the road really struck me, hurts to see such great buildings in such disrepair.
I understand what you mean entirely .the past should not be erased. These houses are works of art
I have heard of many cases of trees that have lived longer than buildings and their owners. Flowers, however, are something extraordinary - an amazing memory of long gone times. The story told by Caleb is touching and sad, but at the same time it gives hope.
I understand about the daffodils. My grandparents' farm house, which played an important part in my childhood, is now long gone, destroyed after their time by a fire following several years of neglect. Now when you drive by on the road in the Spring there are only a few surviving daffodils and tulips along where a picket fence in front of the house once stood. Oh, and by the way, all the locks in the farmhouse were the exterior mounts like the one you have for the basement door, except that the ceramic knobs were white.
What a wonderful video. I have a little tip for you I learned from my father. Run the theads of the screws over a bar of soap. The screws go in a lot easier. Keep up the great work your doing.
These basement doors look amazing once restored! And PS I may have found the issue in the lift control board. Trying to see if it can be fixed...
Thats the best news ive heard all week! The door looks good but it will look amazing once the frame is done and i point that wall.
That's beautiful, to see the past still trying to show us love lived there. ❤.... That back door is gorgeous Kaleb.
Down here in Springfield we got CRAZY hail for a few minutes
Those flowers are daffodils, and they grow from bulbs. If you are careful you can thin out the bulbs and save some to plant in your garden. You need to thin them out so that they will not become too crowded in. There are loads of youtube videos with instructions on how-to. Short of that, there are lots of people who love gardening who could help you.
I wish Kim would do that..ughh
Nice job on the door! Your house is regaining it's dignity! So much yet to come.
My Mother lived way up on a hill when she was young. I never knew her mother. When I was a child, we walked up through the woods to her old home place and it was a tough hike, briars and weeds. My Grandmother’s house burned after my grandmother moved, but a concrete wall remained, in addition to flowers that my Grandmother had planted. Mom cried when she saw them. She’s been gone 6 1/2 years now and I wish I could remember the location. I’d go up there and take some flowers for myself.
Once your house is complete, and maybe even during the next 2-3 years, you may be getting more and more jobs using the skills you've developed working on your home! BTW, we had locks just like the one you installed on yours. They work well, as long as the screws are long enough.
2-3 yrs, you are very optimistic 🙃
Daffodils pop up in abandoned cemeteries when someone cuts the weeds down. Nice job on the gates. St. Louis produced so much ornamental wrought iron, including the iron raiings that New Orleans displays so well, it was made in St. Louis and sent down river. Good job Kaleb.
What I love about your videos is that watching, you can truly appreciate the time and labor put into each section
I'm happy to skip a video if it means you are getting so much done. :) The basement is coming along so well! You are really honing your skills, but the fact you are at heart an artist still guides everything you do. I hadn't realized the daffodils were growing near the footprint of Mr. Hall's house. Totally worth a sentimental sigh, and I'm glad you shared the story. Years ago I saw a show where a couple bought a large house and property in (I think) Michigan, which was originally built by the man who invented the fertilizer, Miracle-Gro. After the snow melted in the spring, they were floored by a massive display of flowers that came up all over the front yard. The window project sounds like a great opportunity, and a way to maintain goodwill in your community. So very glad the tornado missed you!!!
I totally agree. Some one lovingly planted those flowers.❤
For the very short beadboard leftovers, you could encircle a dog bed (or two), or make shelves for the kitchen.
We had those pearly light switches in the 1920s Milwaukee Bungalow I grew up in.
Those are daffodils. Where ever the bulbs are planted they come up year after year. And they divide and increase too. Nice sentimental segment. I used to have a single tulip that came up year after year that my grandmother planted. Loved it.
Cale it's great to see the care to detail and preservation rather than rip & replace.
I did have a thought on the reason for surface mounted door locks. First please remember I'm in Britain so you know how we always like to talk ad complain about the weather. As you've already mentioned about the damp & previous water coming through the walls. You know from past experience wooden doors & windows can swell. If a door was jammed due to such swelling & poor maintenance of a building or because it hardly ever got used. By being able to remove the lock without damaging the door or frame. This meant the door could then be forced without fear of it not truly being unlocked. You said there was a vet's surgey operating out of the basement. Remember they would have used a LOT of water to swill out & clean after surgeries. I actually thought those trenches at the edges of the was yes had the bead-board resting so far in to drip the water in but not stand in them as they would have funnelled to the drain. Am I wrong on that?
That's maintenance side, but security side if it's a place of business. Then a surface lock is quicker to replace if someone's keys have gone missing.
Do your best to keep those echos of the past. I love them.
Caleb- I so appreciate your introductory words about the mini daffodils. While my townhouse is about 100 years younger than your Grand Dame, it too was neglected for a period of time before I found it (actually chanced upon would be more appropriate). My shared garden also has Spring bulbs that re-appear every year, reminders of a previous owner's attempts to bring beauty. Thank you for sharing your thoughts; they are so welcomed!🌱🌷
Right on those flowers emerging every year to remind us to what or who used to be there! I'm severely tempted every spring to take a SMALL hand shovelful of bulbs from an abandoned home or one demolished and add them to my garden. It would be my way of saying: "we never met but I honor your memory in my garden." Now, have lost a neighbor down the street (nursing home? Death? I cut her grass for a few years. Met her once. She thanked me. Am hoping her home is maintained through the winter and that I can get a SMALL hand shovel of her daffodils in the spring before it sells.
Appreciate your hard work to bring the original parts back to life. Door look so good.😊
I get your strong feelings about older buildings. My feeling has always been: if it ain't broke, please, please, please don't "fix" it!
the knobs are really beautiful!
Hey Caleb! Pro tip! When mounting bead boards you need to put a small distance peace at the bottom, so the wood doesn’t rest on the floor. Otherwise water from washing the floor can be sucked up into the wood :/ since you already mounted alot you can cut a small gab with a finecutter/multicutter using a 1/8 inch of plywood as a distance piece :) btw why aren’t you adding insulation behind the bead boards? Compressed cork board og wood fiberboards is a good environmentally friendly. Kind regards from a Danish Cabinet Maker ps. Rubbing a peace of old candle on your screws makes the go in much easier;)
There is a gap built into the floor so the wood work appears to touch the floor but is actually behind it with space to spare underneath in case of water. :)
Your fathers airbnb is certainly unique! I'd love to see a tour.
The door is beautiful, Kaleb! I continue to be in awe of the quality of the work you do for this old building. I’m excited for you to be able to take on the window job! I don’t think they could find a better craftsman! It was lovely to see Kim, too. Stay safe in this crazy weather. It’s snowing today in central Indiana.🌸
What a difference each step makes!
I understand what you mean. I drive down country roads and see old barns and farms and think about all the life that was lived there.
You should be able to get low profile boxes for the new outlets.
Always seeing you take the time to get things right keeps me coming back for more. You are an inspiration to so many. I love how you care about your community and sharing the new skills you learn along the way. Ps. I feel the same about the flowers.
That old lock set turned out great! Looks like new!
Whatever time you have to share with us your progress on the "old girl" is always welcome and I, for one, will be here for it. Do what you gotta do to get the funds you need to do it right.
Great episode, the door is gorgeous. Love the brown-yellowish shellac.
Love the echoes from the past! Was wondering if there is a movement of people buying the empty lots in your neighborhood and building homes that blend in with the older homes still standing? ❤️😊
On our old property, there's some huge crepe myrtles that my grandmother had planted. The old house had been moved off long, long ago but it was really cool to have those as a reminder of what once was there.
The basement room is well on its way to becoming functional living space, and the entry with its restored pickets is beautiful. Because of the glass panels I have a concern about security, but I'm sure you'll work that out.
Kaleb the door is AMAZING!! Beautiful job!! If you don’t mind, I can make a recommendation, make that deadbolt a doubled keyed, if someone wanted in they could break the glass and turn the lock. It just makes things a little harder for the bad guys
Do to fire exit laws, those are not permitted in many areas.
@@danielulz1640 in a residential situation, none of their business. Over reach once again. There is no ridiculous law like that in my state.
@@nanachick05 tell me how ridiculous that law is if your house catches fire and you can't find the key!
@@danielulz1640 🤦🏼♀️go pester someone else & leave me alone.
@@nanachick05 excuse me, but YOU are the one who made a snide remark to my original comment! Practice what you preach, sister!
One can endlessly enjoy looking at the fire, the water and how you work.
The daffodils are so pretty and cheerful Kaleb. They deserve to be appreciated as you appreciate them!
Always love watching what you’re doing no matter if a week goes by without a video! We get to see what you do to improve it and someday we’ll all see the full reveal of your beautiful home!!👏👏❤️
I loved seeing both yours and Kim’s hand putting the doorknob into that beautifully restored door. Happy days to you both OXOXOX’s love y’all.
would love to see the windows renovation videos. also congrats on growing your business restoring antique houses!
Oh, Kaleb, I'm so glad to see this video! I was concerned that something had happened, maybe related to the crazy weather we've been having. So great to see the functioning outside door to the basement including original lockset. And the job working for your window 'artists' (cuz that's what they are) sounds perfect for you. The videos can be worked around the real stuff, we'll be here. And you know what? You should transplant some of those daffodils over to your place when the front gets all done.
Love love the paint job on the black and white door!
Hi Caleb. You are getting much better and confident with your work. That's great. I live in a historic area of North Western NJ and I too see flowers where houses once were. It makes me think and wonder of what used to be. We lived here for 35 years now and most of the old timers have moved on. A lot of early history here. Keep up the good work .
Yes. Who was the lady who planted those daffodils? Was she a young bride in a new home? A mother planting bulbs with her children? A husband to surprise his wife. They are gone, whoever they were. But the flowers bloom on.
The outside of that door is amazing!!! I can’t believe how beautiful it looks. I remember those little switch locks on doors in the home I grew up in.
Bless you all!
The door is done, yay!! Very exciting times. Take care Caleb and Kim ❤
Love your spirit for the past and history. I also have been trying to breathe new life into a late 1800 farmhouse in texas for the past 12 yrs. They are treasures !
Beautifully profound thoughts today that are spot on.
I love finding the echos of what was there, on my street we have the original granite curb stones and near the end there is two carved stones that mark the entrance to a small farm that survivied the victorian urban buildings.
I enjoy watching your careful work, wherever you’re doing it, and listening to your chat. Will be nice to see your “neighbours” house 😊
many years ago, My dad found several clumps of daffodils on a mountain near us, he assumed there must have been a cabin, a homestead there once. He dug some and shared with us. 43 years later they have spread around our property and every year I wonder about those people who tried to live on the mountain.
It is truly amazing all that you have accomplished!!
I love the old /new door knob n I love that cool looking door. Those type of doors are hard to find today. It looks so good. And when the rest of the bead board is up it will be perfect. You’ve done some amazing work Caleb, be proud of what you’ve done.
It was so nice to see Kim. It’s been quite awhile since we’ve all seen her. So here’s to ya Kim…. hello from Florida. We love you both ♥️😊👍👍🌟🌟
The door is beautiful. You do wonderful work. I'm curious on how your going to make this door secure from someone trying to break in.
It makes me nervous too. Break the glass, turn the knob and open the door. I guess it's because I live in the city. It doesn't look secure. Beautiful, but not secure.
Hopefully someone has common sense and sees that this an antique home
And this Caleb is giving it all he gots to preserve history and doesn’t break in. But remember, God is protecting his home, God appreciates this, he has his angels protecting him
He could have a security door made by a welder for for a fair price that matches the window security iron.
Everything you have done so far is amazing. I absolutely love your attention to even the smallest detail. That to me is true restoration. Wish you much success with the contracted window job, I know you will do first rate work as always.
My family moved from St. Louis right before I turned 4 in 1966. I don't remember much but I do remember the foyer and the alleyway between our house and the neighbor. We lived on Chamber St. I would love to come back and do something like this. I will definetly subscribe so I can follow along.
Nice that you now have a back door 🚪 and you done a great job on the painting of the outside of the door 🚪
The daffodils probably started with one or two bulbs and propagated from there. ❤
Hang in there! You are doing such a wonderful job!
That was beautiful concerning the flowers. How true it is
I think the women of the neighboring house would not only be astonished, but be thrilled that those daffodils they planted are still thriving more than a hundred years later!!
The old tile on the floor is beautiful too!
When you are ready to put in your own front garden, you should dig up a few of the bulbs. Let them be in front of a home again.
Great job Kaleb! The door looks amazing installed. ❤
You did a great job😊 Thanks for helping me have courage to improve my home through your sharing tips on making our homes better ❤! Please and love to all!!
Nice job on the door Caleb! Hi Kim!!
Kaleb, The house is looking better every day. What beautiful work you are doing. Thanks so much for the videos! 💕
Kaleb, you are doing a fantastic job. I’m glad you are being able to take on other projects other than your own home. Hopefully that will save you from any kind of burnout and be financially helpful. Have a great day and great job on the door.
Screw slots look best when they are all going in the same direction
the door looks beautiful. your earlier video on its restoration inspired me to tackle a crusty door on my 1885 house. i am still fiddling with the latch set to get it to operate smoothly. thanks for the inspiration!
Love those flowers ! I would be thinking the same way as you. Beautiful reminder of what was once. ❤
Yup, they used to do a lot in style back in the day. Good job on those gates.
Thanks Caleb, take the job and buy the Slate! Great opportunity. Hi Kim and Pups ❤
I really enjoy your attention to detail. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, would you please video your window repairs? Several of us enjoy that as well. Thanks and great work!
I love the flowers! Spring is so beautiful in the Midwest! I hope one day someone will restore that derelict house near you! Maybe it will be me! Have an excellent day today!
@4:44 I have found Rustoleum Rust Reformer paint works well painting things like that fencing.
With minimal sanding or removal of rust, I sray painted the inside of my wheelbarrow. I used it all season and there was minimal scratching of the painted surface and no surface rust on the wheelbarrow.
I have also used it on other tools, lawn mower deck bottoms, flag pole, trailer hitch, trailer and other projects.
I don't know what is in it or how it does it but can highly recommend it.
Glad you are all safe and what a lot got done!! Looking good 👏
I loved the EASTER FLOWERS my grandmother had them planted all around her old place. It gives me a happy and peaceful feeling seeing them. I enjoyed watching snippets of KIM and your beautiful dog 🐕 too. The house improvements are so satisfying to watch. Thanking GOD for keeping your family and neighbors safe. Your skill level in all you’ve done is EXCELLENT.
It's hard to see old neighborhoods die. Keep positive
Nice to see how everything is starting to come together. Slowly but surely u will be back on track
Good job Caleb. Good Luck with your New Job!!!!
Q? Are you going to put wrought iron gates to fully cover the doors since the doors are not really secure considering they have glass in them? The wrought iron for the windows is lovely. Nice work! 💐 If you're out in the woods and come upon a stand of daffodils real thick like that, chances are real good that if you look around you may find the remnants of a homestead.
"Bigger, grander things"?? You already do big, grand things! I can't see that you would put me in awe of your work even more! And I LOVE your take on those flowers. Tells me a lot about you. I wish I could win the lottery and give you a big, fat donation.
Thank you Kaleb. Great video.
The door looks great, Nice job .
Those daff,s are interesting!you explained it perfectly!
Its amazing how you know how to fix everything, without hiring out. Except for the major stuff
that door is just amazing. such great work. congratulations
The door looks great nice job
@Kaleb - since you're doing door hardware, if you end up doing more door/cabinet hardware, check out a hole centering drillbit. I only recently learned about these after redoing all the doors in my house, but they allow you to get perfectly centered holes for things like that.
