Nah it looks more difficult than it actually is. You learn certain tricks to help so here is a tip, focus on the dark area first, then blend with a brush lightly, go over dark areas again, blend again. This is called layers. After that take a glue stick the 1s you use for hot glue and bring out the fur. Work better than an eraser and makes it look super thin. That's basically it. The more you layer the better. If you still don't understand, take a cotton ball and smear some charcoal or graphite on a white piece of paper, then take your glue stick 'use the rounded edge only' and swipe across it you will understand once you see the result.

btw this trick works with regular hair, clothes, and eyes! It's really amazing how something so simple can elevate your art.
