Is it overthinking to try and figure out how to resolve 3 bar cycles over 4/4 section of a typical AABA 32 form?

Hi Eric! Not at all ;-) Some cats do it all the time. Also it will help in having control in any form you might be playing.

Hi, Phil. Thank you for this great video. What's the name of your band? Who are these fantastic musicans?

Hi Eric! Thank you for watching and writing in :-) That is Bill O'Connel on Piano and Lincoln Goines on bass. You can see the whole project here on my channel. The session was amazing and i will never forget it. Really great cats! Many greetings from Bali!

Just let it wash over you and watch it as much as you can. What happens is your ears will expand into the material before you can actually execute it. A totally normal process. But you have to make the time to absorb. Thanks for writing in bro :-)

I only used 3 turnarounds on the ride , a lot of jazz ride changes in the same way as a bass line would . But so far I've only approached comping type phrases in quite a random way. I've tried to sight read phrases as short long. But many phrases crash right through that thinking. A lot of independence type exercises are not very jazz and are just lumpy. An overall concept is always what I want to know as it has way more use than fixed phrases that get jammed into music . I hate all the trends of lists like rlkkrllrkklr they are a very closed box way of thinking. I will look into these larger displacements of subgroups of 3 . 😊

I agree. Patterns are low hanging fruit in drumming. The combinations that are popular now are really just regurgitated Gary Chaffee material from decades ago. With a new twist because of a certain genre we all know LOL. You will love the 3 stuff is my feeling!

How do you hear polyrhythms? Do you hear it as one rhythm? Or do you hear them as separate rhythms where you change your focus to the different parts going in and out?

Great question actually. There are phasas in how we act with any phrase. The initial practice phase where we decipher and work the basics. The second phase where we can begin to fun tion on the kit with it and the third....where we have internalized the phrase and can play it at will with no need to think about it. I have a video thats talks about this if you would like to see it :)
