- Jay Forrester SM ’45 (Part 1)
Germeshausen Professor of Management, emeritus
Project Whirlwind 1944-1956
A pioneer in early digital computing, Jay Forrester began his career as an engineer and is credited with inventing the first military radar systems and flight simulators, random-access memory, and the Whirlwind digital computer. In the mid-1950s Professor Forrester moved into management, where he became the father of system dynamics, using his knowledge of and experience with electrical systems to analyze human systems. He is currently writing about revamping the US education system.
The discussion of Gen. MacArthur and Sperry was amazing. Forrester was a fairly young guy with tremendous impact. Best 2 hours I have spent in a while watching.
This was a great listen, his explanation of information that's trapped in our heads was definitely validated by this talk. I'm sure given enough time there was a lot more information in Mr Forrester's head that would be tremendous to hear about. Sadly he's passed, but these memories live on, information that's moved from an individual's memory to the global memory
That’s the beauty of this MIT project
Nothing is wasted.
@@josephb4235well, really the stuff that he could not tell people about is.. it's a nice thought that nothing is wasted but really there is so much knowledge and know how and intuition and wisdom and ways of thinking that get lost when we lose any person, especially one who thought so well, and so nmuch and did so much
I love how at 1:12:10 he says that he has only published one second rate physics paper "and I created the computer industry and a few other things". What a legend. This man spearheaded the creation of the American computer industry essentially from scratch, and personally wrote the contract between the airforce and IBM. This was the beginning of IBM and the computer industry as a whole. Amazing. Then he leaves the whole damn thing around 1956 because he was bored now that digital computers were now actually reliable and worked. Then he just decides to create the discipline of system dynamics as it is known today.
wow.. i had no idea this man did so much and was at the forefront of so many conceptual and technological breakthroughs! .. he dun good! .. he dun REAL good!
Always again a pure pleasure to listen to #JayForrester. There is so much to learn from him. So glad to have met him in 2007 a couple of time.
He came to speak at my college and I got to talk to him and he was very warm and encouraging to young people.
that's Really nice to hear..i bet he was glad you were interested and wanted to talk with him too
i hope life will be Really good for you!
Very interesting life, very interesting man, great stories. Thank you
I lived in his neighborhood (Conantum), delivered his newspaper as a kid.
I love this 🙌🏼
54:40 He was actually right! It is Eric von Hippel. It’s just funny he said that and then thought it didn’t sound right
What does this say about the scions like Steve Jobs and the rest about their supposed genius??? This are the real brains behind our present communication technology.

@eddieafterburner thank youuu
$35/term!!!!!!! And this guy walks circles around any modern day college graduate spending >$100k for a 4-yr degree!!!
That is because college is a profit making scam now, not a place to be educated
it sounds cheap but people earned a lot less then.. but maybe it is cheaper relatively speaking
