I taught my first public speaking course at the university level in 1988 and have taught it Non-Stop since then along with an incredible slew of other communication courses. I've designed courses for others to teach, for online and grounded courses, and also for self- directed learners. I've taught freshman, adult learners, and professionals. I've been a subject matter expert and have peer-reviewed courses. I've taught speech in a huge variety of contexts, including when I taught studio television production and audio production/radio station management. I've been a faculty advisor for a variety of student media and student activities that involved public speaking. I've had success in another field that gave me some media exposure in which I had to practice what I preach. I guess you could say that I have truly done it all when it comes to public speaking. But this guy is so much better than me. I'm an old woman now, but I'll love this guy forever. In all these years, I have encountered no one better. And, yeah, I should know what "better" is.
Hi, pwynnorman. Well, you just made my day. 😀Sounds like you have a lot to offer your students. Thank you for your encouragement. I truly appreciate it.
A great collection of active / interactive clues on getting and holding onto audience attention. Using direct method that is mutual, the speaker establishes and maintains contributive control of the topic, using the individual to mutual link that leads to having a different, effective methodology with the listeners. Thank you much, having an audience entertained and engaged through originality of presentation is essential. Your video is a "must see" for those wanting to be remembered, for a message to gain dimensions.
Thank you! I go to Allen Jay Prep Middle school, and we have something called rally which is a time in the morning (almost like a school assembly) where the whole school gathers and the principal does a small presentation about leadership and there's a group called AJP in the morning who perform every morning in rally. They say the breakfast, lunch, sports, and they have a special segment where we just do a small game. I'm part of AJP in the morning, we are all 8th grade students talking in front of 400 middle schoolers. It's hard to gain their attention, especially on Monday, where they're chatty. I'm trying to improve my segment, (I say the lunch everyday). I think I know how to make it better.
May l ask, as a professional communicator, and a good one, why do you change the shot to one where you are looking away into the distance, behind me, as l am the only audience you have, for me it doesn't work , cheers mate
Hi Wally. Essentially there are two reasons: 1) to cover a mistake I made while talking. Changing cameras (and cutting the mistake out) is one way to do that, or 2) I thought the variety would look good. I'm still learning. This is a pretty old video and I have not been switching to that side cut for a while on newer videos.
Thank you, Shabab. I'm glad you like the videos. I can only really do about one video per week at best and keep my sanity. I teach college full time and I have a family. The good news is that I have dozens and dozen of videos planned so I will keep posting almost every week.
Great Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Dinanlinson Belly Secret Approach (do a google search)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for improving your public speaking without the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my old buddy Taylor at very last got amazing success with it.
you all prolly dont care but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my account password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
I have watched a few if your videos, and you always lose me at "God Bless". Religious freedom is great, but so is the choice not to have to hear it in professional presentations.
I'm sure I lose lots of viewers when I say God bless. For my part, I want people to know I'm a Christian. If the cost is losing some viewers, then that's fine with me.

I want to give a little presentation about climate change to the juniors of my school but I don’t want to make it boring... this really helped thanks
Thanks for that, great presentation, short and to the point, very informative and helpful, much appreciated!
Great tips Alex! invite a volunteer is something I will definitely try next time
Great. As long as it adds value to the content and fits, it's a great go-to strategy.
I appreciate how you engage with your audience!

Curious why you have music in the background while you're speaking? What is the purpose of that?
Hi, Cathy. This is a pretty old video. I don't put music in the background anymore.
Wow
What if we have to present something for only 5 minutes ?
It's still good to add some engagement every minute or so. Obviously, you'd have to keep it concise to fit the timeframe.
@@alexanderlyon a kk ty :D
im only here for an assignment

@@alexanderlyon I actually like that response, good for you. Your content is really helpful.
Captain obvious here, not useful. It's like you've never really presented before.
