Every time I have ever worked with kids, the littles want to eat what I eat - often they will have things I can’t eat (sandwiches, etc - I’m gluten free) so if they eat my food I can’t just eat theirs to replace it. It’s rough to say no to sharing, but I’ve learned to have good boundaries…. I will definitely accept food if the parents offer, and will always eat a kids leftovers if I’m about to throw them away and it’s something I like.
I have WORSE stories! I was expecting to hear worse!! Although, I have gone on to have some of the most beautiful and delightful experiences I could imagine as a nanny since those times. 😊
That's crazy about the banana! Every family I've worked for has pretty much said I could eat whatever I find. I usually brought my own food but if I did eat their food I would just thank them for whatever I had eaten. That way they knew how little I was eating and it showed my appreciation. :) I guess it's best if you don't drink or do any drugs! I'm safe! lol I hope you create more of these videos. It's nice to know that these things happen to a lot of us. I've never dealt with the food or drug problems but have definitely had some very uncomfortable situations arise and I had to deal with things I should have never had to deal with. Thank you again for the great videos. I wish you had an agency in the US. :)
As I nanny my word of advice is if you are playing in a yard with a car always lock it. We were playing in a the yard and the child in my care literally disappeared. She was right next to us then gone. It turned into a horror and panicked situation, as sure enough she had climbed into the car right beside us while I helped her sister close their yard gate. While she was only missing for about 6 minutes during winter it was a terrifying time and good lesson.
These were wild stories! Having nannied for over 20 years I've definitely seen and learned a lot of eye-opening things about humanity and family dynamics. Just because people have children it does not mean that they are wise or have their lives figured out, sadly.
I was a nanny in a family, but was mostly the maid. I was a young immigrant and really needed the money. I made $7.50 per hour back in 1995. I remember times of being hungry. I never got anything offered by her in terms of food. They were very well off and complained about money on a constant basis. When they went on vacation, I had to go there every day to deep clean the house, do laundry and she wrote down on a piece of paper what I had to do. She actually wanted me to clean her whole kitchen floor with a nail brush. I called her, stood up for myself and told her that I couldn't do that. I really disliked her and her husband. Stayed there for 1.5 years.
Wow those are just amazing … I cannot believe these parents! As a side note I always try to encourage my nanny to have a snack from our well-stocked kitchen but she always brings her own snacks., I really cannot believe the banana story- some parents are nuts!!!
I am a nanny for 17 years, I am not relying in my work food even if my boss said kitchen is open, I have my own food or just wait until I go home. Some family just testing you when it comes to food. Some counted fruits nor have a sign if you touch it or not. To be safe just bring your own.
Wow. I have never heard of parents counting fruit. I think if they offer you food it is ok to eat it. Of course if you prefer to bring your own food that is totally fine.
The client for the banana one is outrageous!!! If they don’t, I won’t work for them! That overnight one was OUTRAGEOUS too. No way. I had one like that. The father was supposed to get back at midnight and he got back at 4 am. My friends were there so I left them at 2 am to go home.
The second story is one that was extremely similar to mine. I was date night babysitting and the parents didn't give me a time they'd be home. I should've asked but I didn't so that's a little bit on me. I couldn't get ahold of mom because her phone was on do not disturb. I didn't get a text until about 11:45 from her. I had to text one of their friends and ask if she was with them and if she could get ahold of them and she of course couldn't either. It wasn't until either 1 am or 2 am that the parents finally came home. My lesson was also get on end time so you know when to expect that parents home and have them text you when their on their way back. They should also probably tell you where they're going.
I always pass on alcohol and drugs on the job. Always and forever. I was actually hired in place of a family’s first nanny because the other one was drinking while with their kiddos. Omg my mom used to use a pager 😝
Family shouldn’t tell the nanny to have a alcohol what? They may be checking her but she the nanny must be professional and shouldn’t drink alcohol and she is still taking a responsibility of kids ,we never know what will happen if child wake up any time .wow heard first time ,really helpful .🙏🙏🙏
If you are not confident in your ability to handle the situation or you are not getting the support you need from the family then you may want to start looking for a new position. It is important to have the same goals and values as the parents.
Let me refer you to your own video babysitter vs. nanny... These are babysitting gigs a nanny was hired for, not nanny gigs because they are families that the women didn't really work for going out at night.
WHATTTtTt…. I no longer feel horrible about my occasional 1/2 sink full of dishes 🤣🤣🤣🤣
😀

Great advice. I have never head this before but I can see how easily it could happen. Thanks for sharing. 💕
Worse, the child might have started the car and rolled it forward or back. Yikes!

Very true.

I am sorry you had such a horrible experience.
I can't believe the story about the banana! That was funny!
Yea, that is one of my favourites.
Wow those are just amazing … I cannot believe these parents!

Yes, we always encourage our nannies to bring a snack. I am not happy when I am hangry. 💕

Asking for the end time is important. Glad you learned and everyone was safe.
They should pay more if they're going to be after 11pm.

Agreed! Good plan.

Glad it helped.
what do you do when a child hits you and the parents dont do anything or discipline ?
If you are not confident in your ability to handle the situation or you are not getting the support you need from the family then you may want to start looking for a new position. It is important to have the same goals and values as the parents.
I’m sorry I’m going to concur with the nanny solution here
I had this issue and had to go
Hi, how do you become a nanny?
Check out our course on Landing Your Dream Job: www.nanniesoncall.education/store
Let me refer you to your own video babysitter vs. nanny... These are babysitting gigs a nanny was hired for, not nanny gigs because they are families that the women didn't really work for going out at night.
They were just meant to be stories to share.
I mean, when kids go to bed, you can have a drink? Why the he'll not?
Because it is not professional to drink alcohol at work. You are responsible for children and need to be 100% sober when working.
