Arab-Jewish Tensions: As Jewish immigration grew, tensions between Jewish and Arab communities intensified. Arab residents feared the loss of their land and demographic dominance, leading to protests, violence, and clashes between the two groups.
4. UN Partition Plan and the Creation of Israel:
UN Partition Plan (1947): In response to growing violence, the United Nations proposed partitioning Palestine into two states: one for Jews and one for Arabs, with Jerusalem as an international city. Jewish leaders accepted the plan, but Arab leaders rejected it, seeing it as unfair.
1948 Arab-Israeli War: After the declaration of the State of Israel in 1948, neighboring Arab countries (Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq) invaded. Israel emerged victorious, and its borders expanded beyond the UN Partition Plan, while hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from their homes, becoming refugees. This event is known to Palestinians as the Nakba (Catastrophe).
5. Ongoing Conflict:
1967 Six-Day War: In 1967, Israel fought against Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in the Six-Day War, capturing the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. These territories remain a central issue in the conflict.
Israeli Settlements: Since the 1967 war, Israel has built settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which are considered illegal under international law but are disputed by Israel. These settlements complicate peace efforts by fragmenting Palestinian territory.
6. Peace Efforts and Continuing Violence:
Oslo Accords (1993): In the 1990s, peace efforts between Israel and the PLO, led by the U.S., resulted in the Oslo Accords, which created the Palestinian Authority and gave limited self-rule to Palestinians in parts of the West Bank and Gaza. However, final issues such as borders, refugees, and the status of Jerusalem were left unresolved.
Intifadas (Uprisings): Two Palestinian uprisings, or Intifadas, erupted-one in 1987 and another in 2000-resulting in significant violence, military crackdowns, and civilian casualties on both sides.
