Several things to notice (I have the Japanese cartridge since release): - You can have up to 4 same weapons in the game, even if you had them different at the beginning. To do so during gameplay, simply shoot at the "weapon boxes" that you find across the levels and they will convert to the same weapon. Then you have to switch to another weapon that you want to replace and pick the modified weapon box. - Every time you take a weapon box, the amount of ammunition increases. The same goes for the health when you pick a health box. - You can choose between 24 different HUD configurations! - There are two difficulty options: Superhard and Supereasy. Supereasy gives you 999999 continues (wow) and... (read below)... - Because the gameplay is super smooth and fast, some players may find it difficult to fight against the enemies and bosses. This is why, when you play on Supereasy, on the pause menu you have a slider that you use to control how fast the gamepley is. This basically will slowdown the framerate and animations of everything, and at the lowest setting it's really, really slow. It took me years of practice to learn how to beat the game at maximum speed at Superhard difficulty. Until then I played on the the 2nd speed to slightly decrease the gameplay speed during a few boss fights.
This game is so good. One thing to consider though is that in the Supereasy difficulty, if you use the slowdown to give you TAS-like advantages, it comes at a cost: the timer keeps going down at the same rate. You spontaneously combust and game over (for the unfamiliar, this game has no lives whatsoever, just continues) if the time runs out, so if you're practicing the game in supereasy difficulty and you need the extra reaction time from slowing down the game, you also have to come up with a way to beat the bost in a faster and more efficient manner. It's pretty genius, it's a built-in cheat in the name of accessibility but also pushes you towards getting better by having a severe drawback beyond just making the game more sluggish
1) today I learned: blocking enemy projectiles can offer health 2) IT'S JUST LIKE BLOCKING SHOTS IN MISCHIEF MAKERS I'm so bad at AS, and only passable at Gunstar... but I love and respect both, and absolutely adore Guardian Heroes and Mischief Makers. Treasure was a special group of people...

I live in Australia and this game is one of my Crown Jewels in my collection such an amazing game Treasure made some of the best hidden gems that are not so hidden these days
I really should get around to trying this one. Got it on Steam as part of the SEGA Mega Drive & Genesis Classics (I bought all the game DLCs as a bundle, but have mainly been playing Landstalker).
Just played this gem randomly today at a friend's place and i was so impressed. Despite its age, the controls really are awesome, kind of feels like an in between megaman X and Zero. It's pretty sad that i have never ever heard of that one before. And damn that creativity.
The game was mindblowing for middle ~90s .... it's overpower big arcade machines in souns, video, FXs... also Batman and Robin and Contra was perfect too
This game reminds me of the megaman series with much bigger sprites. The lack of a 2 player mode is not a flaw. The game is perfect like this, with a second player it would be hard to see the difference between friendly and enemies shots.
Just found this gem just wow! Wish I would of found it earlier! Thanks for the recommend man awesome job as always! Just figure gonna take sometime to learn the controls but it's a solid ass game!
I do prefer longer and more intricate levels in games like these but it's still awesome and top tier for that gen. The sound work is really impressive too.
SoA producers took one look and decided that we should play Chakan or Greendog instead. This was the time when SoA was trying to push their own games, developed "for Western audiences". For years, they turned out mediocre schlock but eventually they did start getting them right, with good Western-developed titles like Ecco, X-Men 2, Vectorman and Comix Zone. Anyway, before all that, while they were pushing the wonders of Fantasia and Eternal Champions on us, great Japanese games like this one, Yu Yu Hakusho, Monster World IV, Magical Troll, Pulseman and Panorama Cotton were passed on for localization. All but one of SoA'd producers thought that Gunstar Heroes didn't deserve to be localized! However, that one guy really insisted on it. God bless him!
I hated this game at first but it took me a few tries to get the controls and strategy down and now this game is amazing. How do you beat the fish boss, he is so friggin hard. I love how simplistic this game is and it still holds up with the best of any game, they accomplished something awesome with this game.
Lancer is super risky for new players, absolutely not recommend. Stupid high damage, yes, but requires a precise shot (in a game where bosses move and squirm like a slug taking a salt bath) and has very little ammo. Depending on your weapon loadout there's a very real possibility of ending up in a very precarious situation. iirc Ranger and Flame have low ammo too. But now that I think about it, weapons in this game are really, really well balanced. Want less precision but more control over your ammo while still retaining your high damage output? Flame then. Want more ammo and still high damage output, as well as control over your ammo? Sword. Want the complete opposite of Lancer, a low damage weapon that's easy to use and has a lot of ammo? Homing is there for you.
Its really a great game. I just wish Treasure could have finished it. I really like your videos SNESDrunk. Kinda inspired me in a way to start this youtube thing haha.
Oh wow, thanks bud! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch. Hey have you covered star fox by any chance? That is my favorite game on Super Nintendo next to U.N. Squadron.
@@DanielAyy I never knew of that and that makes this game even more amazing. It's incomplete and it still feels like a complete experience. On top of being an amazing experience as well.
I don't claim to be great at video games, but I'm decent. Alien Soldier is hard as nails. I have a repro cart, and used my Genesis Game Genie to turn on invincibility just so I could experience the whole game. Without it, I couldn't beat the first boss.
Told you man! Sick game. SPOILERS The return of seven force had me grinning from ear to ear. Also the giant wolf battle on top of the train was so badass
Love this game. I love the big sprite specially for the main character. I don’t know why other game makers didn’t do big sprites, the fact that the genesis could handle it, it means the SNES should have been able to as well.
I know this is an old comment, but getting good at this is really worth it! The hardest part is getting used to the controls, but the two most important ones are getting good at using the counter force and zero teleport. Also, look at the top right when weapon switching, the weapon wheel is very confusing in the heat of battle lol
I beta tested the Sega Channel because my mom worked for Time Warner back in the day... So many great games I would have never got to play, including this one! I need to pick it up now that I know Wtf I'm doing
One of the very best of the Genesis. Crazy to think it never actually came out 'normally' in America, I think it would've done very well. I might even go so far as to say it's my favorite 16-bit run-n-gun game, as long as you don't count Mega Man.
Sega of America was on their "games developed for Western audiences" roll at that time, bringing us the "wonders" of Fantasia, Chakan, Greendog and Eternal Champions instead of many awesome Japanese games. Even Gunstar Heroes was only localized because a single producer insisted on it!
+The Game Grinder yeah I bought almost the whole pal exclusive library on aliexpress. I don't usually like the idea of repro games but I don't mind when they're from another region.
I was just thinking last night that this game really could've used a controller with more buttons. If the Genesis controller was anything like the SNES, the L/R buttons alone would've made a gigantic difference.
I'm not even a Sega hater, but I am surprised a game that looks like this came out on the Megadrive. Hell, I'm surprised that it came out on a 16 bit system in general
Rented this from BlockBuster Video when I was a kid. Was pretty cool but I didn’t really get into it very far or remember liking it very much. Don’t know why... I was probably just a dumb kid. Lol. (I’ve gotten older now)
