As the rhythmic foundation behind prog-metal’s most talked about band, Animals As Leaders, Matt Garstka has been establishing new paradigms for contemporary drummers since his graduation from Berklee College of Music in 2011. While commonly referred to as a “rhythmic scientist” due to his mastery of highly technical rhythms and time signatures, it’s Matt’s ability to lay the technical wizardry into a deep-seated groove that has driven his meteoric rise in the drumming community.
“Matt told us that he played lighter sticks as a young kid, but as he grew older and got into more aggressive styles of music, the heavier, thicker sticks didn’t deliver the finesse he wanted,” says Neil Larrivee, Vice President of Education and Drumstick Product Development.
The Matt Garstka Signature Stick was designed with a unique alchemy of taper, tip and weight, providing the perfect symmetry between power, speed, balance and sound. The diameter is halfway between the 55A and the Buddy Rich Signature Stick, and is 16” in length. The way the profile blends seamlessly from the shaft, through the taper, and into the tip is key to producing amazing flex and response and a clear, full-bodied sound on the cymbal.
“This stick’s a chopper, but you can smash with it too. To me, it’s the best of both worlds,” states Matt. “It’s an honor to have a signature stick with Vic Firth. I hold them in higher regard than any other stick company. Working with them was really a dream come true.”

What i love about Matt solos is you can really see and hear that the man is playing from the top of his head, just feeling the groove, leting the beat guide him and still not afraid of trying new things during the process, all that in the moment. Not just some exercise type of thing played real fast or something (nothing wrong with that, diferent paths). This man truly is a great musician in my book.
They even invited the unfamous "Woo" guy from the PASIC video. Cool sticks BTW, i love them.
The autistic parrot dude? Aw naw
When the sound guy says "And around the kit please" during soundcheck.
Bruh yes xD
lol
lol... Absolutely!
i dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost the password. I would love any help you can give me.
@Cohen Kody instablaster ;)
Everything he played was nasty but the thing he does from 4:04-4:09 I dont think ive ever heard someone take those chops and place them into a groove soooooooo clean and next level!!!!!
Good lord... you are sooo right. His talent is crazy-amazing!
That was disgusting man, grooved like crazy. This is why practicing your doubles on your hands and feet is sooo worth it. They just sound so clean and beautiful when applied in the right context.
I love that you can here the crew in the background.
Gosh, what a groove, I love that. Fill at 1.04, wow, the flow of it. Ruddy hell. Great playing.
Been watchin matt play since his berklee days ✊🏽👍🏽
Everybody talking about the foot control or the ghost notes....but let's take a moment for listen that snare sound....AWESOME
It IS perfect.
1:04 was WAYYY too fluid 😭😭😭😭👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🙏🏻
Awesome Matt !! Great performance. I liked the ghost notes
GigiTB Drummer what is a ghost note ?? ( because i m french and i didn t reconize this words)
Ghost note is a musical note with a rhythmic value, but no discernible pitch when played. In musical notation, this is represented by an "X" for a note head instead of an oval, or parentheses around the note head. ... "Muted to the point where it is more percussive sounding than obvious and clear in pitch (wikipedia).
Search on RUclips for "Ghost notes", "dead notes", or "false note"
Davide Bonvicini Are you actually attempting to pick up a girl in the youtube comment section
Billy Caswell gottem
I liked the glasses
The complexity in his playing I can only begin to comprehend
His signiture stick is great for speed playing chops. Its what im currently using. Great playing, nice job matt!
This Tama star drum kit, this is the best drum kit I’ve ever heard in my damn life with these meinl cymbals. Just perfection
Andy Ham that ride doesnt sound good, but everything else does
@@markodulic5239 for its construction, it sounds great. But the dry ride isn't everyone's favorite. I think for the context of his music, it works because anything other than a dry or dark finish is sometimes too shimmery and that washy sound fits better as long as it has enough attack to cut
All meinl cymbals sound like trash cans to me personally. But it’s hard to beat any line of Tamas.
Just an onslaught of insane difficult groove licks! 🤯
His signature sticks are honestly a dream to play with 😍😍
One of the greatest drummers of all time!! His musical ideas blow my mind!!
Well that was something to behold! Matt G for the win. Beast 🎯
Definitely one of his top solo moments! I love it!
Porcaro glasses make you play Porcaro shuffle regardless xD
Wish I was good enough to wear the Porcaro/Colliuta/Gartska glasses
they allow you to see time in a new way so that you can bend it to your will
Just by listening to him, I can copy some parts of his style in my own drumming. One of the best drummers alive!
The fact that he's using the single bass pedal most of the time is insane!!!
Mind blowing. Also, I can't wait to hear Matt 10 yrs from now. He might actually be on his way to be the new Vinnie..
Are you kidding me? This guy is a thousand times better.
Vinnie was a pretty good drummer. But come on man: Matt is possibly one of the all time great drummers out there.
@@tromboneman4517 Guys please do your homework on who Vinnie Colaiuta is.
@@avizokhatsu8793 I am talking about Vinnie Colaiuta here,, he is like the Michael Jordan of Drums.
I very well think he may be this generations greatest drummer
Shane Clough him and Luke Holland
Don't forget Baard Kolstad.
No rude intentions here, but you should watch more drummers if you think Luke is one of the best drummers of this generation. I mean he's a freak in his own scene but he is nowhere near where he needs to be variety wise. I think he needs a bit of age before he can claim a title like that. This coming from a Luke fan too.
Big facts.
Like Vinnie meets the best parts of gospel chops!
My mind blew 🤯 at least 12 times while watching this vid.....😩 SOOO GOOOD!!! 🔥👌🏽🤘🏽
A new Matt Garstka video is always welcome 🔥
That’s quick, fluid, smooth tom fill @1:04 🙌. Not to mention his killer groove and footwork 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Lol who is yelling “woooooo” around @1:40 ?
This is insanely good! Recording sounds great too thanks to Austin B.
Matt always pushing the envelope, never playing it safe. Love it
This is so goddamn groovy i'm still watching this 80's video in 2004
His signature sticks are literally the perfect sticks I’ve always searched for. Best sticks I’ve ever used and will buy these forever
This man, what a monster!
Been using the sticks for over a year now!
Grande spettacolo super drummer.
idk what’s faster... Matt’s notes, or my clicking on this video
That’s the best drum solo I’ve heard in a long time. That Tama Star is tuned to fucking perfection.
Btw, for all the drummers/musicians in here. You should check out the version that Alastair Taylor made of this. It’s absolutely phenomenal.
Is this guy even human?? lol, so much talent and hard work put on this solo. I just imagine the amount of hours of practice to get to this level... So inspiring!
When you gotta play drums at 5 pm but be a serial killer at 7
Love his skills, hate his cymbals. Dude is an incredible talent, and his footwork is phenomenal.
That is a bit harsh, they are amazing cymbals, you know you can just say it's not your taste
Awesome how Matt turns the pedal simple in double.
FFS. Always taking it to another level. Just amazing
The part with ghost notes is soooo goooood.
1:04 still trying to figure this fill out
Totally incredible and musical.
ULTRA thumbs up!!! Too many drummers overlook the hi-hat work!!
Phenomenal !! at 2:40 ....Steve Gadd's lick
Math Gartska top 5 drummers in my book!
hello where i find this book please thank you?
It's amazing how Matt went with DW when I still haven't heard a video playing with DW that sounds better than TAMA.
It’s the same thing I’ve been wondering, all the TAMA videos sound amazing. Maybe DW offered more dough.
Um... That China Cymbal is unreal. The perfect chalky bite with a crisp attack that also rounds up to a roar that dies in perfect time. It’s seriously the nicest and warmest but cutting China Cymbal I’ve ever heard.
A truly gifted individual, so much fun to watch this guy play.
602GRIND nothing of matt (or any others for that matter) is gifted the dude practiced 40 hours a week for 8 years straight(while attending Berklee aswell) and still does so when he has the time. He just outworks and outsmarts us. Writing this off as a gift is disrespecting al his hard work
TheZooNinjaS dude where did I disrespect anything about this guy? I know a ton of musicians who work their asses off and they don't progress like the gifted ones do. Yeah obviously it takes a ton of work to get to this level. I feel like you're just looking for an excuse to be negative...
Saker Falcon IOS smh can't even make a simple positive comment without some salty kids looking for an argument....read my original comment and think really hard on whether or not its worth arguing over. Good day.
Saker Falcon IOS all good man, really hard to gauge a convo through text lol, keep it lit
602GRIND His gift is that he can work hard as hell and won’t stop. Dude practices constantly , really worked his ass off to get where is
🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ those ghost notes are so clean!!
Absolute beast, really phenomenal player
Which snare is used in this video? I love it so much!!!
Does anyone know that?
This mans right foot technique is unreal!
That was awesome! 🤩👌
Does anyone use sound deadening rings anymore? Just wondering? I never see anyone using them
Anyone know what the Hi Hats are?
Those cymbals sound so nice
Some say if you listen closely enough to an Animals as Leaders song, you can hear choirs of black gospels shouting hallelujah in Matt's drum tracks.
Extol Jesus that's just the overhead mics capturing the ambience of the room while he plays, choir just shows up out of the ether
Master of the Master 🙌✌️👌
Batteur très solide, rythmique forte et bien balancée, grande fluidité, disons qu’il ne lui manque pas grand chose
4:00-4:18 > Wow...
Me explotó el cerebro...
Dudes not even playing drums in his head anymore, he's straight up talking with them. 👌👌👌
Awesome!!!!!!
Even Casper gets anxious seeing this many ghost notes.
Il migliore batterista del mondo.
Monster of a drummer!
Mankind is about to destroy it's livelihood but also figured out how to do stuff like this. I can't decide what to think of us.
Anyone know if this is a Star Maple or is it a Star Bubinga kit?
Why does he look like after this he’s gonna bring the kids on a camping trip😂😂😂
I wouldn’t mind going on a camping trip if he was going to teach us drums honestly
This is dark😂😂😂😂😂
That’s the best sounding kit ever. Ridiculous
So, like part hummingbird then? This is amazing!!
I have no words 😭
goodness those ghost notes.. and that ride cymbal!
Does anyone know what china he’s playing? I must get it!
i would need all these sticks to learn smth like this
01:29 Adidas shoes? Or shoes for drummers?
Can anyone tell me if Matt plays American grip??
What's that stack under the ride? Sounds incredible.
Tobdaze It’s his signature stack “fat stack” from meinl as far as I know :)
Oh...my...god. YES!
The best thing about Matt Garstka and Matt Halpern is their mouths when they are playing lol
gayyyyyyyyyyyyyy
What the freak Matt Garstka?... Are you even human? My jaw is still on the floor. And who in the heck gave this vid a thumbs down? Haters man. #GiveCreditWhereItIsDue
Bro!!! So Awesome!
I liked the part with the ghost notes
anybody know what hihats he's using here?
He looks like a math teacher who has this as a hobbie!... "These kids don't know what real cool looks like" lol
mad chooops.. awesome fills!
Someone know, if its a 5.5 or a 6.5 snare?
Watched this at half speed its trippy
this is the only gig i know of as a drummer where you shouldn't be worried you forgot your sticks. and if you're a drummer and have ever forgotten to bring your sticks to a gig...shame on you. just wanted to make it sound like i have never forgotten my sticks :(
Astonishing!
That china sounds awesome.
Goddamn those diddles are so clean! What snare drum are you using?
This is a bad man!!! 🔥🔥🔥
young GOAT !
Immense!
1:03 to 1:39 slaps hard
Glasses check at 3:35 without skipping a beat. DAMN
I see Matt, I like
That groove was so filthy I'm going to need a shower
