Icon’s Girlfriend CHEATED ON Him Right in Front of His FACE…GOT EVEN with 70s Hit!-Professor of Rock

- Here’s a question. If you found out one of your favorite bands intentionally tried to sell out, would you like them less? Or would it even matter? Well, today’s band Journey was accused of selling out by an ex-band member, who said they cared more about the money than the music. After just one commercial album he quit. And I’m sure he’d have hated the next album Evolution even more since it featured the undeniable mainstream breakout single: Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’. One of the most gut-wrenching songs of its day… this track is all about how this lead singer Steve Perry’s girl cheated on him right in front of his face. And it became so popular that it served as the catalyst for a decades-long career of worldwide superstardom… Sell-outs or savvy rockers. Either way, I don’t think you could love Journey’s music any less. Steve Perry and Neal Schon! The story is coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. if you remember flipping through the TV guide to figure out when your favorite show came on TV, you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia… Make sure to subscribe below right now. I promise that you are going to love this channel. We also have a Patreon you'll want to check out.
I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show, we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long-term success. On today’s episode, we’re fearing Journey and their heartbreak classic Lovin’, Touchin. Squeezin’.
But you know what, Journey’s breakout moment really occurred over the space of two albums. Kind of unusual. It began with their multiplatinum 1978 album Infinity… but strangely that record didn’t have a hit single on the radio. So even with a commercially successful album in their pocket, Journey’s breakout really wasn’t complete until they released Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’ from their next album, 1979’s Evolution. That’s when this band really hit the big time. I’ll explain more as we get into the story. So let’s get going.
Journey was formed in 1973 in San Francisco, and was comprised of by ex-Santana members Neal Schon on guitar and Gregg Rolie on keyboard and vocals… as well as bassist Ross Valory, guitarist George Tickner, and drummer Prairie Prince. Initially going by the name the Golden Gate Rhythm Section, the band would rename themselves Journey by New Year’s Eve
1973, when they debuted at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom.
The first of Journey's long list of line-up changes came in February 1974 when drummer Prairie Prince returned to his old band, The Tubes. He was replaced by Aynsley Dunbar. This early iteration of Journey specialized in jazz-rock, complete with lengthy and improvised solo spots. Vocals and lyrics took a backseat to the instrumentality, just like things had been in Santana. Journey signed with Columbia Records in the fall of 1974, and then released their self-titled debut on April 1, 1975. It would sell a modest 100,000 copies. Then after a lengthy US tour aimed to generate more exposure, guitarist George Tickner left the band to attend Stanford Medical School.
Poll: Let's try something different... What is the MOST OVERPLAYED classic song of all time?
"Stairway to Heaven"
Don't Stop Believing--Journey
Margaritaville
Living On A Prayer
*....WE WILL, WEEEEE WILLL.......* ...if you know it, ya KNOW it...... ; )
Bohemian Rhapsody
For many of us, Journey isn't and will never be Journey without Steve Perry.
💯
Journey will be performing in concert just a few miles from my hometown next weekend BUT I absolutely will NOT be in attendance!
Like you, Journey isn’t to me and will never again be Journey without Steve Perry!!!
I agree, Arnel is doing a good job but it sure isn't Journey to me and I'd have no interest in seeing that band with that line-up. I'd have more respect if they totally reinvented themselves like AC/DC did after Bon passed, then you could tolerate the older songs being done by their new singer, but not replacing the lead singer with a wannabe copy of Perry just to carry on like nothing is different and like Perry is still the lead singer. As good as Arnel may be, it was a bad and totally ridiculous and desperate way for the actual band to go, they basically screamed out to The World that they're nothing without Steve Perry😮
@@JoeBilello1969 exactly
Yep!
Steve Perry IS and always will be Journey! He is THE VOICE!

@@peggymalouse2964, I refuse to go to the “new” Journey concerts.

@LilRoseMadder I'm sure 'The Imposter' is a nice guy,but Journey isn't Journey without Steve Perry, 'The Voice'!
100%, and very unique!
Steve Perry definitely had one of the greatest voices in rock history.
Wrong. He had THE greatest voice in all of Rock.😂
@@worldwithout72 Roger Hodgson and Freddie Mercury were pretty good also 🤔
Of course the competition comes an extremely close second in some cases, like with Freddy, not even second but more like 1.5. LOL
Freddy was right on par with Steve. I would have loved to see them do a duet!
@@kam0406 Freddy was in a league of his own. I couldn't see Steve doing "Bohemian Rhapsody"
In 2006 I started helping to raise my sister's children after she passed. Her youngest was 11 y/o. I had a CD carrier of 200 albums. When my nephew would ride in my car, I let him pick the music. At first, he didn't care what we listened to, but after he heard "Journey's Greatest Hits" that's all he wanted to hear, every time. When he got old enough to have his own car, just before he drove off by himself for the first time, I gave him the CD.
Awww that made me tear up😿😿
I get it .., ❤
I have a special memory with that album, too. It is an awesome album indeed.
That's precious❤

"They didn't sell out, everybody else just bought in." That is one brilliant line.
That’s what I was coming on here to say. I thought that was a great reversal on all those people that claim a band sells out.
Buying in IS selling out.
Take that as you will.
Steve Perry use to go to the lounge where Journey played. (Keyword Lounge) They were a Jazz Fusion band. Steve said they were amazing, the best band he had ever heard. Steve got hooked up with Journey and they went a different direction. Unfortunately Steve Perry said he never felt part of Journey. I don’t think anyone would disagree that Steve Perry is Journey. I was lucky to see Journey live in 1986. I was blown away, I had never heard anyone sound so good live. Do I sound like a dad by saying “How did we go from Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’ to W.A.P. Or a guy yelling Gucci Gang for 3 minutes?” Btw, it’s great to talk with other Journey fans!!!
Album covers look all about Nibiru or leaving and returning to earth.
@@lawrencefine5020 Which was on the fans, not them
You can never top Steve Perry’s voice no matter how many RUclips artists you find !!! Absolutely the best !!!
Well the rest of theband can't be blamed for wanting to tour again and earn more money from their own work. Arnel is good enough for the job.
Actually....not. Brad Delp of Boston beats them all.
@@jbertucciI agree. 👍
To me Bobby Kimbal of Toto kicks ass , incredible vocalist/ musician!
Many fabulous vocalists! Steve is great as is Delp and Kimbal.
Steve Perry graduated from my high school. To say that we loved Journey doesn't begin to touch the depths of our ardor. His voice still sends me. Greatest singer ever.

I stood next to him waiting at a crosswalk in Portland, Oregon in the 70’s. They were in town for a show at Memorial Coliseum. He was with a tall, leggy woman and I think my friend and I were the only ones who even knew who he was. Whose death?
Steve Perry is the only singer I have ever heard whose voice can actually give me goosebumps. He is a powerhouse and definitely my favorite singer of all time and I think THE best singer in any genre.
The way he pronounced his words so unique and beautiful!
Amen!
I get goosebumps by my favorite artists. It's truly annoying when listening a long time, but we're connecting physically to the music. It's solid, real, and our bodies are affected by it. That's priceless
I went to the Journey concert while visiting a friend in Chicago in 1986 for the Raised on Radio tour . We had dead center seats in the back 10 rows up . Journey played for almost 2 hours of HIT after HIT . When Steve Perry came out for the 3rd encore , people were electrified from the show and we’re all wondering “ what could they POSSIBLY play next ? ? “
But alas , Steve Perry said “ well Chicago, we have one more for you and your hometown friend ( from Evanston ) Jonathan Cain is gonna start this one off “
Getting lost in the shuffle of a 2 hour Hit after Hit show , J Cain proceeded to play the opening notes of FAITHFULLY .
The place went MENTAL . FULL BLOWN RAPTURE . Girls were crying, men were hugging and high - five-ing .
Hail to the Commander -In - Chief of arena rock n roll , Steve Perry . Hands down , the ABSOLUTE BEST 🙏
WOWWWWWW I Have goose bumps hearing this story! I saw it in my mind's eye. EPIC !
Just the thought of that made my heart feel the love I had for their music and goosebumps as if I were there. You were very fortunate to have been there. I had the privilege of seeing the band 38 Special a few years ago. I had no idea the feeling and emotions that would hit me during that concert. The memories of their music were flashing before my eyes. It felt like I was in a magic time machine. My 60 year old body felt 18 again for those two hours of entertainment. I didn't want the concert to end. It felt so good to sing and be with other people who were loving the show as much as I was. I wish I could experience that feeling at least once a month. I graduated in 1980. So I was lucky to be able to enjoy the greatest era of music as a young adult. 😊. That was the last era of music I liked and still the only era of music I listen to till this day. All of my CD's are the 80 rock era. 😎
I graduated highschool in '76 so I was fortunate to have come up when rock was AWESOME!! I went to A LOT of concerts in those days but never got to see Journey. Your story raised the goosebumps like the other commenters said. I could just imagine what that was like!!! What a great memory you have for life. My favorite concert in the '70's was Fleetwood Mac in '77 the Rhiannon tour. It was AWESOME too!!
Simply Majestic…..What a voice
Your comment is the best I have ever read.
To me the epitome of Journey was "Feeling that way/Anytime" the combo of Perry and Rollie's vocals are just magical!
Hell yeah! Love this one... uh, two.
Great song. My favorite Journey song also.
Great song. I would have loved to have seen more of them together
I see things the Same Way.
My favorite two songs too
Well eventually Journey DID become sell-outs!!!.... Once they became popular, they SOLD OUT every arena and stadium they played in!! And yes, it was "The Voice" that did it.....
And Aynsley Dunbar joined Whitesnake for their 1987 self-titled album which sold 8 million copies. Nice way to say he didn't "sell -out".

I know it's Schon's band, but Steve Perry was the real superstar that sealed the deal. As you said @professorofrock, Steve Perry's voice! OMG! I remember listening and singing along to them in the late '70s, and when Steve Perry would hit those super high notes, I would stop trying to sing along and just listen in awe. Incredible!
I often used to take his leads down an octave; now, at 58, that's sometimes a struggle and I take them down two octaves.
Journey never gave up their creativity and views, so they never were sellouts. They just needed an upgrade at the time and Steve Perry was the man for the job.
Old school Journey was the best. Wheel In The Sky got them rolling.
My favorite Journey tune.

I will never deny how stellar and popular the Escape album is, and well-deserved. But the fact that Perry and company knocked it out of the park ON THE FIRST TRY makes Infinity my favorite album. :)
From the time I was 12 until I was 16, I wanted to marry Steve Perry. I'm 57 now, and my family still teases me about it. It all started with Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'.
I wanted to marry Elvis since I was 2. I was so in love with him.

The "na na''s" at the end are imitating the childhood taunt "na na na na na. " You did it to me now somebody's doing it to you. It's your turn to cry. Na na na na na!

1st time hearing 'Feelin that way' the contrast between Greg Rolie & Steve's voices, the way they worked that tune just brought you into such a high & excitement for the chorus each & every time. Greg was playing shade & Steve had the light. Light & shade, the best art always captivates us with this almost primal mode of expression.
Long live the music of the Journey we all take, & that's called life. These guys did what we all gotta do: make your purpose, no matter what, never give up. That's the highs & the lows.

Steve Perry got over it for sure. In November of '85 I was part of a Marine Communications School volunteer group that worked the manual leader boards around the greens at the Palm Springs World Cup of Golf. On my way to the 17th green where I was stationed, I saw Steve with his arms around two hot chicks on either side of him walking from one place to another. My most favorite song from Journey which totally elevates Steve’ voice to a level that, to me, is indescribable, When You Love a Women. The video is captivating. 💙💙💙💙
Ahhhh “The Party’s Over” from the Captured album. Nuff said.
Reminds me of getting stoned at the lake and throwing the frisbee after high school graduation, what a summer, class of 79, lovin touchin squeezin, my sharona, children of the sun, breakfast in america, it was a moment
What a great memory!
Yes it was! Even though I was only 12 in 79.
Awesome! I’ll be graduating in less than three months.
It took me YEARS to finally realize just how freaking AWESOME Mr. Perry's voice really, really was (is?). I mean, I was always a Journey fan, but I really never realized just how smooth, controlled and insanely vibrant was his smooooooth voice! It pains me that his later life has been wrought with personal issues. It's a shame that all of the joy he has given others has not been given back (I guess except monetarily). I also realized that George Michael's vocals were in that same vein!
I have a great memory of my girlfriend and I during high school, stadium seating in Las Vegas in 78 seeing Journey up close. We were 10 feet from the stage.
In my eyes Steve Perry is Journey . I never knew they existed until Steve rolled in and rocked the world with his outstanding voice
Didn't realize that about this song. I always loved "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" - such a great track. Learned something new today! LOL - Journey, such a CLASS act. Love them. :)
Thanks Bart!
That’s what Steve Perry’s voice does captivates you!! Calms and mesmerizes ❤❤❤ Even his speaking voice soothes you
I used to cruise around in my little light blue 1979 Datson 280 ZX listening to Send Her My Love. I love that song. 🎵
My first concert at 16 years old. BLEW MY MIND! Biloxi MS Coast Coliseum. No concert I’ve ever been to since except maybe VH5150 came close. Great times. Miss those good old days and bands like Journey, VH, Foreigner, Heart, STYX, REO, list goes on and on. #80’schild
Journey's manager, Herbie Herbert, was an unabashed capitalist, who's job was to keep the band on schedule (record 3 months and then tour 9 months), get them exposure and sell albums, concert tickets and merchandise. That was his job, and he was great at it. They also set the bar for concert experiences by introducing massive video screens that helped the folks in the nosebleed seats feel closer to the excitement on stage. The band (and let's not underestimate the seismic boost that Jonathon Cain gave the band in '81) wrote stellar music and deserve all the spoils and accolades they got. I don't consider it selling out at all. I only wish they could've made a few more albums between '86 and '96 to see what direction they might have taken, but Steve was fried by early '87 after a decade with the Journey machine and personal issues.
Thanks!
The reason why Wheel In The Sky and Lights became so popular outside of commercial radio is because Herbie got them into rotation with "elevator music". People heard those songs in elevators, restaurants, doctor offices, etc. Genius.
Yup. Huge success.
Journey has a sound alike now in the voice of Arnel Pena, but no one can replace the original Steve Perry. Nothing is better than the original.
You should have herd how Arnel sounded in 1985 when Uly's band, The Amo Band, played in a large bar called Cal Jams in Olongapo City PI....You would have asked yourself, "Is it live or is it memorex"! I'll admit Steve is one of a kind, but Arnel was a damn close second live on stage!!!
Journey was my favorite band while I was in my teens. I'm 60 and still love Journey it brings back so many memories of my first love.
Loving touching and squeezing makes me smile. About 25 years ago, I was driving back home to Eastern Idaho from the California coast with my oldest daughter and my mother who was in her 80s. We had just experienced a very traumatic week. Loving touching and squeezing came on and we were singing along to it, but when the Na na na part came, all three of us were singing at the top of our lungs. When it ended, we had smiles again and we had not been smiling that week. My mom left us later that year so thanks for the memories.
I knew it. I used to add the word bitch at the end for Steve because you could hear he wanted to say it so much.
😂😂
😅😅😅
🤣
I guarantee he heard you at least once and smiled at you!
Love that quote... they didn't sell out, everyone else bought in. Awesome.
They hit the jackpot when Steve came to the group.
Today's Journey is trying to sound like Journey of old. Not quite there. The Voice reigns!
If trying to make as much money as possible is "selling out," then sign me up...
Wheel in the Sky & Lights were big hits where I lived, it put them on the map.
In the early 80s, I was finally old enough. To go to concerts. 58 now. Been to about 7 journey concerts. They did bring the crowd together. The Rose bowl was won. Drunken brawls. People throw in stuff everywhere. Food fight. When journey came out and started playing? All of that ended, focus on the band. Just the way it was. I'm Glad I experienced it
