come on ... are you serious? you are THE Jose Muñoz??? I'm getting fanboy goose bumps (despite being 50 years old, but one is never too old for that, I guess). After reading Millers Sin City stories recently I re-read the REAL stuff, my German Alack Sinner books, and your comics are soo much better ... even though it's comparing apples and oranges, but I can't imagine Miller's art if he hadn't stood on the shoulders of giants like Breccia and you.
That's the best video about comics I've seen in a long time. I'm waiting for the American edition of the whole Alack Sinner saga, coming this year, and now feel like I must find Perramus and Mort Cinder. Thank you, sir

Argentine artists are some of the best in the industry. Eduardo Risso is definitely my personal favourite. I've always wanted to read this Argentine series called "CyberSix" by Carlos Trillo but unfortunately I don't understand Spanish. And for some reason they won't release a Cybersix translated version even after all these years. I've begun to lose hope that we'll ever see on North American shelves.
+Canadian Turtle There's a Cybersix version in French and Italian as well... so... sometimes I wish I would have paid more attention in French when I was in school.

+skrimshander yes, most of the episodes end with a bit of a cliff hanger, so one can recognize the breaks if he wants to - but it reads totally fluid as a one piece.
The Alberto Breccia books are difficult to find in Spanish or English. I wasn't aware of Borges appearing in one of his comics. The "g" in Borges is sounded with an "h" as in "hey." I think Breccia also did artwork for the Eternaut in the 60's when it made a brief return. Beautiful books. Wonderful video.
+Gore Vidal Ah, the pronounciations... I watched a video about Breccia, just to find out how to speak his name. But in the case of Borges I even changed his forename :/ Yes, Breccia did a "modern" version of the eternaut in 1969.

+earl grey I think you would like them. Borges and Casares were friends in Argentina and Borges encouraged Cortazar in his early career. The latter, though, spent most of his adult life in Paris, where he influenced New Wave filmakers like Godard (Weekend) and Antonioni (Blow-up). I would begin with his short stories. Adolfo Bioy Casares was another influential figure in the New Wave Scene. Last Year at Marienbad by Alain Resnais was inspired by his beautiful novella, The Invention of Morel. The latter I read and re-read.

Again the thing that strikes me is how we are really let down here in Canada (and North America as well) when it comes to international work. You made a joke down below about another life to read all the books, I would second that and add in a solid fortune at my disposal to afford it all. I would also second Gore Vidal's sentiment that your videos are really needed here for all of us on RUclips and I am really glad you are here!
+comicKkrakK I think the German translations of these books haven't been any kind of financial success. The fact that the first editions are still around on amazon and ebay for reasonable and dirtcheap prices speaks for itself, I guess. But there have been some passionate people over here who try to spread their addiction and publish books, even if they risk to lose money. Dirk Rehm for example, a letterer of many books among them some drawn & quarterly stuff, founded Reprodukt over here and published Love & Rockets in German, and nearly all the German editions of Daniel Clowes & so on. Without people like him it would be, at least in Germany, just Asterix, Micky Maus and some "Superhelden".... Yeah and I love you too :P

I do feel like I've lost touch over here a little bit when it comes to publishers though, so maybe it's worth a bit of a deeper dig on my end to see what comes up. I'm sure Miller must have seen Munoz's work. He wasn't very well known in the USA (I hadn't heard of him) but then there was a bit of a mini comic book scandal in the mid 1980s when Keith Giffen started drawing in a Munoz-like style and even swiped whole page layouts from Munoz. I think it was the magazine the Comics Journal that ran the Munoz pages next to the Giffen ones. If Miller had never heard of Munoz before then he would have after that.
+Jared Osborn That's very interesting. And it makes sense what you say about Miller, especially considering the astonishing similarities between some of his and Munoz' artwork. Anyway, that makes me even more determined to hunt down more of Munoz comics.

Superb work, even if it was borrowed from Munoz. David Mazzucchelli is an artist who has inspired or been imitated in recent years by the likes of David Aja (Hawkeye) and the artist of Outcast, whose name I don't remember.

I think it may have been Ambush Bug that Giffen's swiped pages were in but Munoz affected his whole style at the time. Mazzucchelli is an American. His work was well regarded but it's funny that his style has taken so long to influence other comic artists. Maybe because he did so little (but highly visible) work or maybe because his style is reductive and hard to pull off. Either way his influence has been popping up in recent years. And Paul Azaceta draws Outcast.
Good picks! I can recommend "Altavista" by Calvi, "El sindrome Guastavino", "Sasha Despierta" by Trillo/Varela and "Dora" by Minerva. They are all 5 stars books but not sure if they're translated.

+earl grey Maybe the subject matter dictates the art style. Alack Sinner is a hard boiled noir story, so Munoz's art is perfect for that. Juan Gimenez is also Argentinean, but he of course produces fully painted art. The cost of printing b&w vs colour is possibly another deciding factor.

I´ve got envy you own so many argentinian jewels there!!!! I cant find any album by Alberto Breccia in my country (Mexico). But I have one author you must add to your precious collection: Horacio Altuna. Heavy Metal published "Love Machine" some 30 years ago. But you must seek for "Hot Los Angeles" about racial riots in 1992 after Rodney King´s matter. Not sure it has been traslated into english though.
it seems that it has not been translated ... but a lot of other adult softporn? stuff is translated - but that's not so much my cup of tea. His artstyle seems to be interesting though and when I come across that L.A.-book in English I'm definitely in, thanks

great, fantastic, I'm just starting with comics, so it's a great opportunity know things from your channel....I also would like to write for comics, just the writing as I'm just ok with the drawing parts and I was surprised that Alan Moore is doing the same....so, looking forward to producing something with value...and if the script is very good there is a good chance to be published as it's a relatively ''easy'' market comparing it with a movie etc....I would also tend to prefer black and white, L' Eternauta is a vivid example of how simple B and w images are unbeatable....anyway, thank you for you answer, I would also go for Mahler and some other classical music...but definitely I agree it hasn't to be too distracting...cheers!
Got the mexican edition by RM Editorial. It's fucking terrible. They downright scanned the pages from the original Hora Cero Issues. There are pages where the text is barely readable, others where the art is a blackened mess. Argentina has a release with similar aproach that's much better, the Vintage edicione. Should have gone with the Fantagraphics...

Interestingly, I just read today in that huge Sin City artist edition that Frank’s biggest artistic influences on that title were Breccia and Pratt.

Borges, along with Julio Cortazar and Adolof Bioy Casares make a trinity for me. I never get tired of the Argentinian trio.

Munoz even did some Batman comics in the 90s. I think he had a piece in Batman: Black and White Volume 1. It could have been Volume 2.
