Nimes is a city in the south of France in Occitania. This is the former capital of the Gauls, conquered by the Roman Empire in 121 BC. Therefore, more ancient Roman architecture appeared in Nîmes than in other French cities. The main attraction of the city can rightfully be called the Amphitheater (I century BC), where gladiator fights were held. It is impossible not to visit another ancient building - the Maison Carré (Square House). This is a perfectly preserved temple of the 1st century BC, which was not destroyed due to the fact that it was actively used - as a church, a museum, a tomb and even a stable. Not far from the city there is also a monument of Antiquity - the highest surviving ancient Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard.

Ah, fair Nîmes. As soon as I stepped out the station up that gorgeous wee alley between Av. Feuchères leading up to Les Arènes I knew I was in a spot to savour. It was July. The cicadas were providing that quintessential Midi soundtrack with their crazy buzzing, the buildings had that faded grandeur/shabby-chic look that France does like no other country on Earth (save Italy), and the general vibe was one of satisfied torpor in the summer sun. Sure, there’s not much to the place. To call it France’s Rome is to grossly insult the scale and richness of the Eternal City, but what there is, including, of course, the superbly preserved aforementioned Les Arènes and Maison Carrée, is worth a day of anyone’s life.
