  • 👕 Have you already seen the cool Hacktoberfest 2023 T-shirt design?
Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of Open Source. A global event to encourage people to contribute to Open Source, regardless of their experience or skill level. Everyone can participate!
During the event, there's also a little challenge which has as a final reward some stickers and a t-shirt, shipped worldwide at your location. However, this has always been kind of a controversial topic though.
But wait... no, I haven't seen this year's design yet... and the reason is quite simple, starting this year (the 10th Hacktoberfest) there will no longer be any physical rewards.
    Hacktoberfest goes digital!
What do you think about this (long-awaited?) change?

What do you think about this new policy and rewards?
Was it a necessary and long-awaited change, or does it ruin part of the Hacktoberfest mood?"

Kinda feel conflicted. Yes it helps the environment. But it felt like a real accomplishment to receive a tangible t-shirt. 🫤

I kinna like the shirt as a trophy to show that I did something neat for the community. It also gave me motivation to actually contribute. Sometimes, it's hard to self-motivate. Even a trivial prize like a sticker is enough to motivate me. If you gave out codes to purchase the prizes, it would still be a great motivator. I would pay for the t-shirt / swag if it was limited to only people who had the unique code from contributing.

This was very disappointing to read on the site. Takes the fun out of hacktoberfest.
I disagree about if participating in the event just for the t-shirt you're missing the point. I contribute to and work on open source projects year around, but for several years I've looked forward to October as a chance to get a fun reward for putting a little extra effort in at the beginning of the month. I'd even be open to paying a small bit to help cover the costs of my shirt, but I'm very disappointed in this change.

In the past years other companies/projects were sending out swags as well, I haven't checked for this year but maybe some are still doing it :)
It won't be the official hacktoberfest t-shirt, but it's still something

@@priyojitsinghaWell then what's the difference between Hacktober fest and just any other month lol? People who want to contribute to OSS will always contribute regardless. They don't need a special "fest" to make their contributions.

@@priyojitsingha But I guess most people did actually participate for the T-Shirt to some degree... Otherwise you can just always contribute to open source project. But the shirt was just a little bit of extra motivation.

Entishification at is finest. I miss my t-shirt last year because of availability (I submitted my PRs the last week). I want to be a cool kid with a Hacktoberfest shirt. But that is not possible anymore. I would pay to enter the contest If money for the Shirt was the problem.

can i really contribute to any repo with 'hacktoberfest' tag? some haven't been updated in years, should i go for them?

    • @DevLeonardo
      @DevLeonardo  9 месяцев назад

You can indeed contribute to all projects with the hacktoberfest topic, but if they're inactive your PRs might not get merged and will not count.
If you can pick a repo, going on active ones first is a good choice.

Bruhh all my friends got the cool tshirt last year and I was waiting to get one like that since a whole year. But this is really so disappointing to read this on the site. Its like I normally contribute to opensource every week but there is no excitement for "The Hacktober Fest" now onwards. And i guess I shouldn't have registered for this, cuz now there is no difference between contributing in regular days and contributing in Hactober Days 🤧

I believe that this year's contributions are likely to exhibit higher quality, and there's a possibility that some of the contributors will choose to stay committed to the projects rather than making just a single pull request.
