- In this video, we’re looking at the character of Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire. It’s probably an understatement to say that Stanley is a controversial figure, and many readers might even write him off as a moral monster altogether, given his rape of Blanche at the end of the play. But is there room for some empathy - or even, pity - for this otherwise detestable man? What if I were to argue that he's a much more complex, nuanced character? Watch how I unpack this with detailed analysis, drawing close reference to specific moments in the play.
