    Gorgeous watch. Had no idea that Waltham was so sketchy about only installing jewels on one side.

      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад

      Obviously they wanted to cut costs, and still make a good looking watch, but I agree it is unethical on their part. I am sure that the jewels were much more expensive back then as they were natural mined rubies, but still. Also as a side note, I have found that the 7 jewel movements usually run about as well as the 15 jewel movements, even 125 years later.

      @@Watchspotnet Thanks for sharing your knowledge about the performance of 7 v 15 jewels. Really impressive that these guys were able to craft such accuracy. I am a hobbyist who is learning to service watches. Am working on simple stuff such as an HMT at the moment. Figured that if I cause any damage, it would hurt my pride, instead of my pocket book!!!

      On every project I decide if it is a restoration, conservation or restomod. Anything that is rare has to be conserved with as little modification possible. Really nice condition common movements many times get restored with all the screws polished and made to look as close to new as possible. Then some common movements just make sense to modify and "make better". This one is very rare, I felt conservation was the way to go.

    Do you ever add shock protection to the balance jewels? I would worry as a wristwatch it may break the balance staff again without shock protection, but maybe if it’s not worn while doing sports etc it would be fine?

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад

      I did actually fit a shock protected jewel to the balance cock of a size 6 Waltham pocket watch movement once. It was more of a demonstration that it is possible than something that I feel needs to be done. I have never seen a balance staff break while on the wrist. The only way I have seen one broken is dropping the watch on a hard surface. I actually plan on making a video shooting guns, hammering nails, playing golf, etc. People think they are more fragile than they are. Also adding shock protected jewels takes away from the originality of the movement.

    Nice work, I didn't see how the movement was held down 🤔

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад

      There is no side to side movement of the movement because the case is carefully made to the same diameter as the movement. I didn't show it in the video, but there is a thin rubber O ring between the dial and the case to protect the enamel dial. To keep the movement from moving up and down in the case the case screws on the movement are backed off until they just come in contact with the case back when the case back is fully tightened down and the rubber O ring gets compressed a little.

    Im curious about the stem. Are you modifying the crown stem and putting a stem sleeve into the watch case? Beautiful watch!

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад +2

      Exactly. I am modifying the case to use a vintage sleeve and crown. The sleeve and crown stay in the case attached to the crown when the movement is removed.

    How do you get the crown from 12 to 3? Is this only possible with 3 o'clock crown pocket watches?

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, you need to use a hunter (crown at 3:00) movement. If you have a movement with the crown at 12:00 you would need to make your own dial that is rotated 90 degrees, or make a case with the crown over the band at 12:00, but those cases need to be really thick to get the crown above the band.

    9501 on the ratchet wheel? Isn't that a sliding part and should get hp-1300? I thought 9501 was for more forceful contact? Let me know what you think, alway looking to learn.

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  3 месяца назад

      Technically the ratchet wheel shouldn't touch the bridge at all, but should the owner never send the watch in for servicing the mainspring arbor will eventually enlarge the jeweless hole in the bridge causing the ratchet wheel to lean and start scraping the bridge. If that ever happens there will be a dollop of grease stuck right where I left it waiting.

    I may have missed it... Do you manufacturer the cases?

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад

      The case is a generic case made for the ETA 2824. I modify it to fit this movement perfectly and add a pocket watch stem and sleeve.

    • @Do_all_self
      @Do_all_self 4 месяца назад

      So nice!
      To questions,
      Do you find that it is more useful to use grease on posts and pivots on dial side, instead of D5 or equivalent?
      How do you solve the crown moving from 12 to 3?
      Again, very nice video!

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад

      I use grease on anything that is driven by the human hand when winding and setting the time, unless it is also driven by the mainspring when under it's own power, then I use HP 1300. Grease would be too heavy on most pivots and slow or stop the movement. Regarding the crown position, I only use Hunter movements which have the crown at 3:00. Open faced pocket watch movements with the crown at 12:00 are not a candidate for conversion unless you make a case with the stem at 12:00 (over the watch band) or make a new dial which is printed 90 degrees rotated.

    • @Watchspotnet
      @Watchspotnet  4 месяца назад

      There is no pre-made wrist watch case for anything less than a size 16 pocket watch movement that I know of, and those a ridiculously large 48mm+ watches. . I convert cases made for modern ETA movements.

      @@Watchspotnet This will not happen if a screwdriver appropriate for the screw size is used. After all, there is no single size bit in the screwdriver set. Frankly, these details determine the quality of the work.
