I'll give this about Pauly Shore, he seems to have a good sense of humor about himself and also is aware of how silly casting him as Pinocchio is and is having fun with it like the rest of us.
It's bizarre that we had 3 different Pinnochio films in the same year, and the only good one turned the Blue Fairy into Death, and set the story in WWII.

Pauly Shore’s line delivery in this flick pretty much steams to either “I’m just doing this for a paycheck” or “I’m going to be extremely flamboyant for no particular reason” with hardly a between.
Despite being called "Pinocchio: A True Story", the characters are actually based on Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy's 1936 book "The Golden Key, or the Adventures of Buratino". It's a retelling of Carlo Collodi's "Pinocchio" with some noticeable changes that is much more familiar to the Russian-speaking community.

Interesting fact for Phelous: Jordan Worsley (who supposed to voice Pinocchio) is a slightly famous RUclipsr in the "Skyeng" channel (which is the biggest online course of English in Russia), where he is telling some interesting cases in English language and some aspects of the British lifestyle. "If someone wants to be human, all they have to do is be human." I guess Lucilda went to the same medical school as the doctor from Magic Gift Of The Snowman.
The design of Pinocchio in this movie is apparently based on Buratino, the 1936 Russian adaptation of Pinocchio by Alexey Tolstoy. Buratino's nose doesn't grow so that's actually why that part of the story is left out.
Pauly Shore's performance here is sadly an example of why celebrity voice acting tends to get a bad rep. Which is worse in this case because Shore DOES have some experience voice acting as he voiced Bobby in "A Goofy Movie" and its sequel and he did a fine job there... though then again the character was basically designed with him in mind because he's a stoner.
Exactly. All he had to do as Bobby was his normal 90's movie schtick. Here he basically does his normal inflections, but with dialogue that doesn't work well with it. And they didn't so much as rewrite any of his dialogue to end with "Buh-UHHH-ddy."
@@ditzyhere3138 It's just a weird casting decision on both counts. Jon Heder does work as the horse, though. It feels like something in his wheelhouse, being goofy voiced, dorky character and all. The Disney pinocchio did the Pikachu tear thing MOSTLY because they did it in their Tangled movie, with the use of the song and everything... except Tangled gived good explanation about why it would work, seeing it's all about her magic healing powers, where the pinocchio one, there no reason to focus on the song and we never introduce that Pinocchio could done this... hell, it's actually worst than with pikachu, because the pokemon movie at least do some forshadowing to prepare to this scene.
That actually only happens in the English dub of the Pokémon movie. The original Japanese one gives no explanation for the magic Pokémon tears, but 4Kids thought that a reason was needed so they shoehorned in the line about Pokémon’s tears of life.
Out of the 3 Pinocchio remakes that came out in 2022, This version was definitely one of the weirdest. But it wasn't that bad it had moments that made me laugh.

A really great ending to this would be - Pinnochio gets turned into a real boy, then immediately dies because he never removed the bullet lodged in his chest from earlier.
Calling it the "True Story" of Pinocchio, you'd think they'd make it a bit more grounded than the original book, but this movie was really random and confusing. Half the time things just kind of happened for no reason.
Yeah cause nothing says grounded then human-sized Fox’s and Cat’s that can talk, wear clothes, and know how guns work, a talking horse that no one questioned can also talk, and a fairy with warp reality powers that can make dead plant matter come to life.

Still better than Disney's remake of Pinocchio. I know that's not saying much, but at least I remember this version even if it's for the wrong reasons.
The girl with the blue hair makes me think of Malvina from Russian version of Pinocchio called-Adventures of Buratino(Golden Key). She had blue hair too tho in the animated movie(and story) she had escaped the circus and lived in a cottage and tried to teach Buratino manners and alphabet and stuff. She was a love interest to not for him but for Pierrot. And in Buratino his nose actually DOES NOT grow when he lies. and his behaviour is actually rewarded and he becomes a non-conformist. The story cut out A LOT from it's inspiration prob bc Tolstoy's book was written in 1930's so A LOT of the...19th century moralizing and outcomes would've been seen as way too harsh. Possible theory on why they changed the horse's name for the international version: "Tybalt" is a prominent character from Romeo and Juliet, so it's possible they wanted the name to be more SEO-friendly.
@@juliamavroidi8601 I know RUclips comment sections are of course the appropriate place for this debate, but I will not stand for this defamation. Tybalt’s only crime was trying to shelter his naive young cousin from someone he had every reason to believe would screw her over (in every sense). I mean even aside from family feud thing, Romeo was an older guy with an infamous reputation. Would YOU trust your cousin to a guy like that?
I have no idea why a horse can be compared to a violent antagonistic Romeo and Juliet given that the movie‘s Tybalt does not kill someone for the sake of upholding family honour.

2022 was really the year of Pinnochio, wasn't it?
It sure was a Pinnochiodemic
Yes.
Yep
Yass!!
*Sees stuff about Pinocchio: A True Story*
Yeah, I'm not gonna watch any footage from this.
*Sees that Phelan has uploaded a review about it*
...Dammit. *clicks vid*
15:10 I like Original Horse Tybalt's Emo Phillips impression here.
I hope we hear more of Phelous's marvelous imitation of Pauly Shore in the future.
I swear, we need a Paulie Shore Pinocchio VS William Catner movie.
Whichever one wins, we'll be annoyed.
Possible theory on why they changed the horse's name for the international version: "Tybalt" is a prominent character from Romeo and Juliet, so it's possible they wanted the name to be more SEO-friendly.
Yeah, I always wondered qhy they naned the goofy animal sidekick after the villain in Romeo and Juliet
OH😂 oh course 😜
@@gracekim1998 You'd be surprised how many hoops people with money will jump through because they think it will solve The Almighty Algorithm ;)
“The world’s one and only talking 420 puppet, Pinocchio.”
Also Saberspark and Cartoon Cipher lead me here.

Welcome 😊
Does anyone else notice that the white bird that hangs out with Lucilda looks a lot like Nigel from the Rio movies?
Somehow this Pinocchio still didn't end up being the worst one that came out last year.
On one hand, I can't help but laugh at Pauly Shore's performance. On the other hand, I can't ignore the lip-syncing issues and not expect Freakazoid to comment on it.
Pauly Shore is someone whose popularity we couldn't figure out then and we can't now. I have as good a chance explaining to my kids why he was a thing as my kids telling my why Roblox is fun.
The 90s is just hard to explain in general.
1:22 Too bad there's no Britannica DVD out there with purple Pat Morita asking "do you believe in wood? A man from Italy wrote a story about a wooden boy..."
13:52 Tibalt is a real successor for the Next Mutation Turtles.
Or the Charmed ones
It's a new way to avoid heroism
I love reviews for this movie and kinda miss them. Yours is one of the best but I am a big fan of yours too so that helps
I appreciate you leaving the “yeah” for us on the “lovers on the moon” quote
Great review! Love your silly impressions! Well done! It’s definitely one of the strangest versions of Pinocchio ever made. One of the best reviews I’ve seen so far. Love all the horse jokes!
