Good to see this car in Nepal. How long the same battery can sustain before it dies? What after that? I heard Tesla’s batteries have 15 years of life so why I have this question…

Thank you. So sorry that those points are not addressed in this video. However, I will individually reply to such queries. Please give me some time.

As far as I know, for all the batteries used in EVs (high voltage batteries), they use charge cycle instead of just having a flat life cycle. I heard that all lithium ion battery have a charge cycle of 600-800. Hyundai offers and claims 700 charge cycle for their batteries. Just to make it easy to understand, one charge cycle = 320 km for Hyundai kona regular. So for 700 charge cycle, it is = 700*320 (range) = 2,24,000 KM (total range)....which means, up to 2 lakh km, there is a warranty that Hyundai provides.....and the good news is, even after 700 charge cycle, the battery is still alive and does not shy away from all its capacity. They say even after u run 2 lakh kms, battery is still going to have more than 50% of its life remaining in it..... Now you can imagine with this given charge cycle and the capacity they are claiming, how long we can have an excellent EV ownership experience. I just calculated it roughly and found out that the we can enjoy driving EV for around 15 years without much of complication like you had mentioned for Tesla.

I heard Hyundai talking about sustainability in the video but I did not heard what’s Hyundai policy to prevent these batteries being filled in landfills? What happens when battery reaches EOL?
Also I was expecting to hear something about battery performances, didn’t saw that.

Thank you so much for raising the question which is very relevant. I had put forward you query to get the correct information so that my reply is correct and will make sense. Hyundai Nepal is very much concerned and are focused towards sustainability of EV (as in overall) and it's components. As of the current technology used, lithium-ion polymer (the main EV battery) cannot be recycled completely, however, other electronic components apart from battery, like circuit board, aluminum parts and few other parts used on can go through the process (recycle).... Now talking about the lithium cells, there are few things which Hyundai Nepal has started. First is exploring the possibilities to send back these battery cells to the manufacturer as they say Hyundai company (parent company) has already offered to take these battery cell back. The only hindrance that we can currently encounter is with legal issues which Hyundai thinks will be solved in the coming days. Secondly, since Hyundai Nepal has a training center called HTA (Hyundai Training Academy) and they have more than 50 automotive engineers in their network who are already working with some sort of DC to DC charger solution with these used battery by using solar power source, they are saying when the batteries drain completely it doesn’t mean that they are completely waste. These batteries still can be used as a mode of electric conductivity which can be used on different application if powered with solar or other sources. During the process there should be some constant supply or energy (from some other source) . I assume that this is some kind of solution whatsoever, - instead of only dumping battery as a waste. Additionally, maybe after 1 or 1.5 decade from now we will have many more efficient technology that will be invented which will help us to reuse the batteries. I am very confident and I am sure that Hyundai Nepal are also doing many research to address to this situation. I hope I have answered to your query..
