This format was based on the American show "Strike it Rich", which I understand the second incarnation of the UK version was called in the mid to late 90s. In the US, the show only lasted in five-a-week syndication from September 1986 to September 1987, and was hosted by sports broadcaster and former professional baseball player Joe Garagiola.
You’re absolutely right. Strike It Lucky was made by Thames Television, but revived by London Weekend Television after a two year hiatus. It was pretty much identical but aesthetically different and more cash up for grabs after prize limits (imposed by the Independent Broadcasting Authority) were effectively scrapped by the IBA’s successor the ITC (now Ofcom).
Even from day one, you guys had eccentric contestants. And if I understand correctly, in the first series the winning couple didn't get any consolation money if they went over their Hot Spot limit, right?
This was absolutely brilliant, simpler times. There's nothing as good as this these days in a similar format.
Am i really this old. 😂 Remember sitting down to watch this with my Mum Dad and Sister. Where has the time gone.
