It was, I checked and the commentator had provided the move number of each position, so easy to check. It was indeed a repetition: same position on the board, same person to play next.
@@jamescooke7243 yes, obviously, and that's what happened. then it's the arbiter's job to verify the claim. if the claim was valid, but they rejected it nonetheless, they did a rather poor job.
Most 3-fold repetitions happen back-to-back. They can be hard to spot with a 6 move gap or whatever it was. As if to prove the point, the arbiters apparently missed this repetition even after taking a few minutes to look for it.
And Tania later said MVL resigned :D it's a circus, I get it that they want to include mutliple cultures, but it's a pain to watch, I was constantly modifying volume because of Tania's high pitch voice and screams, I think Howell deserves better company, Leko, Rench or Naroditsky would be great.
Pfff, hahahaha, squeezing water from rock this man. Imagine being his opponent, thinking you've got a shot and then this happens XD Magnus goes "nope, I've seen this position before, twice, draw" "you gotta be kidding me".
you have no idea what you're talking about, opponent is MVL, one of the few to constantly beat magnus, and this is rapid, not blitz, and in the past, during an official blitz game, MVL already correctly refuted a 3 fold repetition claim by telling the opponent and arbiter that the repetition had been repeated three times sure, but with different color having to play. And that was also with gap between the three repetition, mvl had only couple of second on the clock. So don't be fooled, MVL knew all along.
@nickperez1577 When I watch him play, my right brain asks , what's he doing?"' Then my left brain replies, ' Hes doing GOAT things you don't understand'. 😂
David was right. He called the moves where the repetition occured, so you can check yourself if you don't believe me. 3 times the same position, with each time the same player to play next.
This is incredible to me, how can the arbiters not be able to check if the position occurred 3 times? The player has to point out the current position and claim it happened 2 times before and you have to just go back in moves on the computer and detect it indeed happened. I could understand before computers when you had to do it from just the moves written down by the players, but this is insane incompetency...
It was actually overly relying on computers that caused this to happen. It was a SW issue. Well, thinking more generally it was a process issue. I'm not sure what the right fix is gonna be long-term, since this was a rare event
Man just a noob here and not a pro like all others in this comment section who are bashing arbiters through their keyboards. Can someone tell me please what was the best move in the position where MVL decided to trade instead of keeping pressure?
They were talking about never giving up in a game and that is definitely my motto. I am a low rated player so I make a lot of mistakes but I am playing other low rated players and they often make mistakes too. I have won a lot of games where I was down badly either by the player returning a mistake or they don't manage their time and lose. At the same time I often play and when the opponent makes a simple mistake he just resigns immediately. Sometimes I don't even know why they resigned and miss the move they see but they resign anyway. It is strange behaviour but I am happy to take the win.
That's fair, but at the GM level the etiquette changes. MLV gave up on this one at the end (appropriately). He had no way to win the match so why prolong it?
I’m so confused. Can someone explain to me why if it was a draw did they continue to playing? And also why is it a win for Carlson if it was a draw? I heard so many different things and got lost in the sauce. 🤦🏽♂️
It should have been a draw. Magnus claimed a draw. The arbiter made a mistake and denied the claim. So, they kept playing. Closer to the end of the game, the players agreed to a draw. Carlsen did not win this "game" but he won the overall match (since he was already ahead on the overall score, and would go through with a win or a draw - the draw was enough)
it was already a draw from the 3 fold repetition, but somehow the arbiter denied it and gave MVL time. which just prolonged the draw since they still agreed to it in the end
@@therealyoku You're mostly right. At the end, both players knew Magnus had a better position, but they agreed to a draw anyways since it ultimately did not matter. The end result is the same - Magnus goes through with a draw and MVL is eliminated. You're right in that it should've been a draw anyways when Magnus claimed threefold repetition (and the arbiter mistakenly denied that claim).
I checked the game and it was in fact a correct claim of 3-fold repetition. I don't understand how the arbiters can still miss it, especially with literally digital inputs of the moves. You only need to code a simple script to check for 3-folds.
You are right, but he issue was with the software. The arbiters did do their job (somewhat?) by checking, but it turns out that software was unreliable. It's a process error, I'd say.

Magnus had 7 minutes, Gukesh had an hour and a half, small difference between the two. Also, Magnus is critical because he has high expectations. Gukesh showed a much higher level in the Olympiad then he did in the world championship match.

Magnus should have been the arbiter
10:21 , 11:36 , 12:15 It took 5 seconds for the commentators to check.. What took the arbiters 2 minutes to check and decide incorrectly?
I thought 3-fold repetition was part of the chess rules.
