I disagree, my r20 is fantastic on HF, I'm a licensed radio ham and have tried lots of radios over the years. This beats the portable tecsun etc hands down, used on a 10m wire it performs stunning and doesn't overload. Plus it's made by a proper radio manufacturer.

Hi! Quick question, now that the Icon IC-R20 has been discontinued, which communications receiver of similar characteristics would you recommend? Regards! Oscar

IC-R30 was just approved by the FCC and should be available to buy very soon. It decodes many different analog and digital modes. More info here: www.universal-radio.com/catalog/widerxvr/1030.html

Hi, the R20 and R30 are fantastic little communications receivers and the things they can do, like decoding multiple digital modes and dual recording on the R30, are interesting. I understand and agree about handhelds, in general, being a compromise compared to a dedicated or desktop unit. However, I wonder about comparing the R20/R30, which have fantastically wide coverage (0.1 to 3304.999 MHz on the R30), to something with more "normal" coverage, like the Alinco DJ-X11, which has coverage from 0.05 to 1299.99995 MHz, but does not cover digital bands (AM/FM/WFM/SSB/CW only). Might that not be a worthwhile alternative? Cheers and 73 from a happy subscriber.

If it overloads on SW, has it not got a built in attenuator? I have the AOR AR-8000 but not tried it with a suitable SW long wire antenna yet.

I noticed there is an amplified antenna for these type of radios for shortwave frequencies available on the bay. It claims to really help with shortwave signals on these radios. but would it help these radios at least reach the level of the current offerings from Tecsun, Degen, etc.? I was wanting a wideband receiver to listen to shortwave, air, weather, am/fm and ham. I have the means to listen to all of this but wanted it all in one portable device.

I dont think so, this type of radio easily overloads with strong signals

+TREE HUGGAH the GP5 is a good portable shortwave radio, it is dedicated to shortwave so it does that quite good and has a DSP chip in it, it is derived from a Tecsun Receiver I believe

I had ic20. It was nice receiver but yaesu vr500 was much better on HF. Finally when I tested DegenDe1103 both - vr500 and ic20 are weak on hf. Looking to buy again ic20 as a satelite receiver - it has nice function to automatic adjust frequency which is helpful to compensate Doppler effect
