Dont start it till tank is cleaned and all fuel lines replaced.....get ozone machine for mold..replace brake lines and fluid. Drop engine and pull tins..replace oil cooler gaskets. .dont wash curtains in washer. New tires rated for bus.check seat belts clean fuses and connections.....replace shifter bushings....get blaze cut and fire extingusher...repack wheel bearings...than start really working on it....done it
Yea Hope!!! Nice score! Don’t be afraid to poke at the rusty bits with a screw driver to see how solid they are. I’d like to hear more about the lower dark grey / black coloured section; looks like some previous rust repair happened. Take a magnet and see if it sticks. Looks like it’s a solid project! Can’t wait to see some progress. Time to buy a respirator and bust out the elbow grease and get cleaning. Keep the videos coming!!!
That magnet trick is smart !! Never heard of it. Yeah I noticed the black was fishy as soon as I saw it, but maybeee the repair was done well? Probably not lol When I inspected it first I poked it and there was no soft spots on the side I checked… lol couldn’t fit on the ground on the other side and now it’s coming back to haunt me! Still could be worse. Trust me I love stabbing things and making them worse im sure I’ll tear this thing apart haha😆 Stay tuned!
Should do a video showcasing the engine when you get a chance, it looks like you are missing a lot of cooling tin and other parts off the engine. I even see some of them in the back of the bus there! As someone with an aircooled, the tin is way more important than you can imagine, make sure its all in order!
Thanks for saving it! Looks like a great project! I'm interested in seeing how you deal with the rust underneath as well as the canvas on the roof. Your video skills are really good!
I am stoked! I’ve been binge watching your videos🤣 I have an intense amount of work ahead of me including rebuilding the engine but I’m excited for the challenge!
Great '72. Odd that it has the engine inspection access on top, as that was supposed to start for the 1973 model year. Better to remove and make new wood headliner parts and interior wall sections. Those are molded and you will never get the smell out. Many people recreate the curtains. Overall well cared for, with personal modifications throughout. The TV mount IS NOT factory, nor is the shag up front. That should be a rubber mat. Best of luck with the clean up and fixing.
This bus is so cool! I love that it’s a four speed. That shifter knob is going to look great once you get it polished and cleaned up. The whole project seems like it’ll be fun. It seems to be in pretty good shape for being 50 years old too. Before my wife and I started living on the road full-time we had an 81 Nissan Datsun Pickup. I absolutely loved it. It ran amazingly. I sold it to my uncle and upgraded to a Ford F-250 to pull our trailer. I love my Ford, but I miss that Datsun, lol. There’s something really fulfilling about bringing life back into these older vehicles. I’m excited to see you work on it.
Thanks! I appreciate your support and agree it’s in awesome shape for 50 years old especially considering it’s unrestored! How cool to live on the road full-time! I’m sure it has its struggles LOL. Make sure to subscribe so you can get updates in your feed☺️
Hi ya, Brilliant video! Just found your channel the other day and subscribed this is the first video I've had a chance to watch all the way through of yours, but saw a bit if the one with the curtains lol.. I LOVE your enthusiasm and energy! And it's great that you managed to find a bus in that condition like you say it's filthy but it's not TOTALLY shot, bit of structural welding underneath ok those beams and sills perhaps but the rest of it bodywork wise doesn't look too bad! Once it's all cleaned up and the structure underneath is sorted it should clean up nicely with a fresh coat of paint and refresh the interior. Well done! (My mate has just bought a 1972 same colour 2 years ago when pandemic hit he decided to take the plunge and bought one except he went the other end it was fully restored and ready to go, so him and his Mrs had a few trips in it last couple years already! Lucky sod! Lol 😅👍 Anyhow look forward to following your journey! Cheers from London England 👍🙂😎🏴
the yellow is fuuun...love it...that thing seems to have good bones....brakes freeze up after sitting for a while not a big deal....get the fire exstinguisher updated...they expire..
I think your a bit optimistic about the rust you really need to strip off all that globed on paint and undercoating so you can see what they did to band aid this sucker together and keep it on the road so long. I would pull all the interior out, flooring, engine and power wash everything to see just how much metal work needs to be done. Even the battery tray probably is pretty bad once you get the paint, bondo and whatever else they globed on the lower 8 inches. I is still fixable but you might want to get yourself a mig welder with gas so you can start on the metal first. Looks to me like they did some frame repairs too. Lots of band Aids. there get that stuff sorted before you juet start driving it. so it is safe. Metal underneath looks pretty frail to me. especially around the rear torsion tubes. Car lift would be nice start with a 4000lb 4gpm pressure washer and a spinning tip get under there and blow off all that crap undercoating and peeling paint so you can see what the real problems are. Get some rust converter ultra from amazon. I think your in Canada so my links probably wont work.
Thanks! I already plan to take the interior out and do a thorough exam on the rust. I’m going to deal with structural rust and the engine simultaneously, and then strip the paint down and do body work in the future. Most the windows need some welding, I probably need to purchase a lot of the lower 12” panels…. Have to wait until I have some more disposable income!! Oh, and disposable time!
I haven’t pressure washed it yet because it’s not warm enough/ dry enough in NL yet for me to shove so much water into all the crevasses. Another month and I’ll roll it back into the driveway and spray it down good! With the interior removed !
Don’t let Fn Mike dampen your optimism. You are new to this, but you’ll be initiated into this torture ritual soon enough. 1972 was a change year. Early Bay up front and Late Bay aft. You’ll likely bin that pancake and find a good upright to make it go, unless you get lucky with the engine. You have kilometers on the clock? Let’s see the M-plate.
just found your channel! love the video!! looks like a great project:))🤘🏻, My Family and I have been looking for a sweet baywindow westy or vanagon westy but everything’s up north haha. My Father and I run a youtube channel where we service, repair and restore vws and film vws show/camping events all over FL! Subbed & definitely gonna watch all the vids haha💜🤙🏻
Great Video, I love your optimism, you've a lot of work ahead of you. We're on our 3rd Westy and still working on improving it. Start a go-fund-me or some way to get in touch and I'll be the first to help. Considering you're in Nfld, the rust is surprisingly fixable albeit with lots of green stuff . We've done Newfie several times and love it. Hope to see the bus as you pass through N.S.
Savage find! Best of luck restoring
Thanks for producing the video. You can’t go wrong with a butterscotch ‘72. I recommend pulling the fuel tank to clean it.
I bought a boroscope ! I’m gonna look first but I’m sure it’ll need to be dropped. Stupid it’s behind the engine!!
Look forward to watching the updates later today 👍😎

Great find! That bus was well cared for and loved.
Thanks! It’s actually in rough shape underneath, and was abandoned for 15 years with quite a bit of filler on it haha…. But I have seen worse!!

Congrats! You love buses, can do work yourself & not afraid to get dirty - You're my kind of girl! hahaha!! Awesome find though!

Thanks !! Yes I have quite a few projects to tackle! I’ll be sure to film as much as I can 😄
Lucky you found a bus like that!
I am stoked! I’ve been binge watching your videos🤣 I have an intense amount of work ahead of me including rebuilding the engine but I’m excited for the challenge!
Nice find …. Subscribed from the UK 👍😎
Solid project, keep the updates rolling looks like an ideal candidate to pretty up and throw some parts at 🔧
Thanks! Don’t forget to subscribe so you can see more of my updates on this bay window and my vanagon! This thing is about to see so much love!

A 72 is a good find. They have some advantages over other years. Best to remove all the add ons and restore it.

So pretty!
Video turned out great, Hope! Stoked to see the progress on the new bus.
Appreciate it! Hopefully one day I can cultivate a fan base like you guys! Lots to be done on this bus so stay tuned!

Absolutely! I will be getting a full sized one ( I have one in my vanagon) and I need to get blaze cuts for both!!
Thanks
Blaze cut!! Best $150 you’ll spend on a bus
