EN - It stands at 639 meters above sea level dominated by the promontory of the Cornate di Gerfalco mountain group, in one of the most beautiful natural surroundings of the Val di Cecina and appears as a mighty fortification perched on a limestone spur overlooking the Valle del Pavone overhanging the narrow Rio Riponti gorge.
Its structure follows a quadrangular shape arranged around a central courtyard. It preserves testimony of different eras, from the feudal one, (in which the presence of the most numerous population was found in the castle), up to the episcopal one, passing through the Medici period, up to the present day which sees the manor in need of urgent care which restore it to its former glory.
It was built around the 10th century, to guard the silver mines scattered in the nearby area of Poggio Mutti. It belonged to the Bishops of Volterra, to pass in 1135 to the powerful family of the Pannocchieschi Counts, rich feudal lords of over 30 castles and numerous possessions in the Volterra area. It later passed to the Municipality of Siena and to the County of Elci. At the beginning of the 20th century it was a possession of the dynasty of the Sergardi Barons, coming from Siena.
Throughout its history, the castle has undergone various alterations with the addition of rooms and architectural elements that followed the taste of the period in which they were built.
It still retains the square keep, the main tower and the belvedere which overlooks stupendous and evocative panoramas. The south-west walls and walls, structured in stone and brick, are the most in ruins, overlooking the steep limestone rocks, refuge and ideal place for the nesting of rare birds of prey such as the Peregrine Falcon and the Lanner Falcon.
Like any self-respecting ancient castle, even that of Fosini has its legendary ghost. In fact, it is said that Ilario Brandani, known as a necromancer, connoisseur of ancient formulas to evoke the dead, lived in the castle around 1400, precisely in the years in which an epidemic of "dark disease" struck a large part of central Italy. It seems that he was the only one who managed to escape the disease and it is said that he stubbornly continued to survive alone in the castle in the grip of madness, in the midst of dozens of corpses. It is said that after his death his ghost, imprisoned within the walls of the manor, wandered for a long time in those disturbing places and that still today it continues to hover condemned to the eternal search for its companions.
IT - Si erge a 639 metri s.l.m sovrastato dal promontorio del gruppo montuoso delle Cornate di Gerfalco, in un ambiente naturale tra i più belli della Val di Cecina e appare come una poderosa fortificazione arroccata su uno sperone calcareo che guarda la Valle del Pavone a strapiombo sulla stretta gola del Rio Riponti.
La sua struttura segue una sagoma quadrangolare disposta attorno a un cortile centrale. Conserva testimonianza di epoche diverse, da quella feudale, (in cui si riscontrò al castello la presenza della popolazione più numerosa), fino a quella vescovile, passando per il periodo mediceo, per arrivare ai giorni nostri che vedono il maniero bisognoso di cure urgenti che lo riportino al suo antico splendore.
Fu realizzato intorno al X° secolo, a guardia delle miniere d’argento sparse nella vicina zona di Poggio Mutti. Appartenne ai Vescovi di Volterra, per passare nel 1135 alla potente famiglia dei Conti Pannocchieschi, ricchi feudatari di oltre 30 castelli e numerosi possedimenti nel Volterrano. In seguito passò al Comune di Siena e alla Contea di Elci. Agli inizi del XX° secolo fu possedimento della dinastia dei Baroni Sergardi, provenienti da Siena.
Conserva ancora il mastio quadrato, la torre principale e il belvedere che spazia su stupendi e suggestivi panorami. Le pareti e le mura di sud-ovest, strutturate in pietra e mattoni, sono le più in rovina, affacciate sulle scoscese rocce calcaree, rifugio e luogo ideale per la nidificazione di rari rapaci come il Falco Pellegrino e il Lanario.
Come ogni antico castello che si rispetti, anche quello di Fosini ha il suo leggendario fantasma. Si narra infatti che Ilario Brandani, noto come negromante, conoscitore di antiche formule per evocare i morti, abbia vissuto al castello intorno al 1400, proprio negli anni in cui un’epidemia di “morbo oscuro” colpì gran parte dell’Italia Centrale. Pare che fosse stato l’unico a riuscire a scampare al malanno e si dice che avesse ostinatamente continuato a sopravvivere da solo al castello in preda alla pazzia, in mezzo a decine di cadaveri. Si racconta che dopo la morte il suo fantasma, rimasto imprigionato tra le mura del maniero, abbia a lungo vagato in quei luoghi inquietanti e che ancora oggi continui ad aleggiare condannato all’eterna ricerca dei suoi compagni.

Very enjoyable flight showcasing these magnificent castle ruins. I’m hoping there will be restoration and preservation for this place before it’s lost to time and nature. I love seeing these old structures built so long ago. We haven’t any ancient castles here in the states to film so I’ll just enjoy seeing them on utube !
