- Think you're stuck with a single Gutter value in the Data Merge Layout Tool in Affinity Publisher? Think again!
In this video I'll share how to overcome one of the key limitations in Affinity Publisher's Data Merge Layout Tool - the inability to set different gutter sizes for horizontal and vertical spacing. Specifically, I demonstrate how to create unequal gutters, essential for more complex label layouts like the Avery J4785 name badge labels.
The Data Merge Layout Tool typically only allows for a single gutter setting, which can be restrictive when your design requires distinct horizontal and vertical gutters. But don’t worry! In this tutorial, I share a simple yet effective workaround using guides to set up your layout and duplicate a single Data Merge Layout across multiple spaces, all while maintaining control over your design.
🎓 What You’ll Learn
- How to set up a custom label layout with different gutter sizes
- Using guides to precisely position your layout elements
- Creating and duplicating Data Merge Layouts
- Connecting your data source from Excel into Affinity Publisher
This step-by-step guide is ideal for anyone dealing with complex label or badge designs in Affinity Publisher, offering a practical solution to work around current limitations.

That's awesome! You have a knack for always explaining things in a super clear way, which is hard to come by. This hack is going to save so much time. Thanks a bunch!
I wish you had done that one first as I spent a whole afternoon working it out for some business cards. Thanks Elaine, for a great series.
I have never used the data merge tool in affinity. Until today, I didn't think it could be useful to me. As usual, I now see value in using this option. I do a lot of labels so this could be my new favorite tool!
Totally agree with the other comments that your explanations are always clear and concise. Really appreciate this video as I always have ‘fun’ sorting the spacing on labels with printer settings and positioning - I end up with some just not fitting 🙁
Too cool! Very sneaky and effective work around! Thaanks!
Sooo Helpful @Elaine! You’re the best with ‘dirty Hacks’! Greetings, René
I have had this exact issue - now I’ll know for next time. Wonderful.
Brilliant as always, @Elaine. Thank you.
Thank you Elaine for this hack. 🙏🏻
From a purely practical point of view, as the precision of registration remains very uncertain on desktop printers, I tend to be wary of fillets that are printed flush with a cut.
In this case, I think it would be more sensible either to remove the outer fillet altogether, or to thicken it and make it extend well beyond the presumed cut areas.
But do we really have to be reasonable? 😋
Thanks
