As an American, who had never even heard of handball until watching my first Olympics many years ago, It's always a joy watching it every 4 years. It's a nice change of pace and what makes the Olympics so enjoyable
Personally I think the closest ever Olympic handball match was the 2004 final between Denmark and South Korea: After 60 minutes ordinary time: 25-25 After 10 minutes extra time: 29-29 After another 10 minutes extra time: 34-34 In the end, the Olympic gold had to be decided in a penalty shootout: Denmark 38-36 South Korea. Yes, South Korea has a lot of bad luck when it comes to close matches against Scandinavians. They also lost the 1996 Olympics final after extra time... against Denmark.

I don't think it made it in time if 29:59 is the last second the ball can enter the goal and still count. The moment the clock hit 30:00 the ball was only about to pass the line. You can see this in one frame at 3:20, set your playback speed to 0.25% and start around 3:18. While the clock was still at 30:00 the ball passes the line in the next few frames but not before 30:00.
In basketball it makes sense to count if the ball leaves the hands before time is up, but in sports with a goalie it makes more sense to count it in only if it goes in before the clock (hockey).
@Bard Erland of course i am right. Do you know the handball rules? It only counts if the ball fully crossed the line when 30 minutes are over. Doesn't matter if the ball left the hand or not.
@Bard Erland of course there is one official set of handball rules. Its from the ihf. It doesnt matter whats happened in 30 mins. If the ball fully crossed the line before the signal, its a goal and if the ball is on the goal line or has not even reached the line, its no goal. If you know anything about handball, you should know that rule. But maybe you just dont know anything. Maybe you shoud read the rules and learn things like that
@Bard Erland its rule 9:1 :"a goal cannot be awardet, if the referee, timekeeper, official delegate has iterrupted the game before the ball fully crossed the goal line." the signal for the end of the game is an interruption from the time keeper or delegate.
@Bard Erland i fully get your point but the problem is that its just wrong in handball. The rules arent in any order. There isnt a rule that says every player has 2×30 minutes to play for the result. The only rule is that it matters how many goals are scored when time is up and time is up after 60 minutes. Not any second later. Im one of these persons just throwing balls around and i did it for more than 20 years now. I know rules that you couldnt even dream of. No it is not? It might be the game where the winner was decided closest to the buzzer. But Denmark against South Korea in the final in 2004 must be the closest ever Olympic handball match. They tied the game and furthermore the tied both first and second extra time. The match was decided by penalty throws (Denmark won 4 - 2 after amazing saves by the Danish keeper, i believe it was Rikke Schmidt) . More absurd was it that it was second time in 12 days the two countries tied as they also tied in group stage. But 25 - 25 after ordinary time, 29 - 29 after first extra time and 35 - 35 after second extra time must be the closest ever decision in Olympic handball.
Handball started as a folk game in Europe, it was the same as folk football but with a smaller ball that was mostly thrown, they Danes, Germans and Czechs started to put rules, they used soccer and basketball rules as inspiration, and there was a large outdoor version Feldhandball (field handball) and a indoor version. Actually the indoor version did used basketball rules as a inspiration, as did footsal. So that explains why they are similar.

I’m not sure about the rules of handball. But in a game of Futsal, which is played on a similar sized court with similar sized goals, the game doesn’t end when the buzzer goes, only after the ball has finished its course. So if the player kicks it before the timer is up, and it ends up going in, it counts - like in basketball. So this is definitely the right decision.

This is actually one of the only sports in which the USA has never won a medal. I feel like if we spent all of our resources on this we could be a contender every year.
The US do not have to spend all their resourses, just convert basketball players who are to small to go pro. And you are set.
This handball was supposed to called football and football was supposed to called soccer. Am i right or wrong.

Yeah the clock in handball doesn't stop
Vinos technically you do have a goalie which is the center who is usually a really tall person and usually stays on the paint/key (near the rim) and plays defense there but on offense it’s a bit different since they can only stay for 3 seconds in the paint.
SilentPotater , technically basketball doesn’t have a goalie, they even banned goal tending .
@@wyatt5978 I often wonder want would happens if you allow goaltending in basketball...
