Gavin Harrison is a beast of a drummer, just drum pyrotechnics all the way through this album, incredible player.

Steven Wilson really likes a lot of pop music and his projects tend to be the "hookiest" of prog bands. He likes the flexibility of prog (6+ minute songs, long solos, different styles) but I feel there is an alternate reality where he was a very successful ghostwriter for pop artists.

It's what sets the "alright" prog artists apart from the "great" prog artists: the ability to write a melody. Especially plenty of neo-prog acts seem to forget they're writing music, and the ability to hum along means something to people.

Okay, now Jana needs to see the live version, where Steven breaks a guitar string!

It's good. But this is one of the few PT songs that I prefer the album version, mainly due to the banjo interlude, which is skipped when performed live.

yeah, it's a classic and 1 I've never grown tired of.
There's actually more to the "Trains" and Steven Wilson I ran into with this tune and SW/PT at a later date.
Arielle Daniel, noted Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson fan girl sadly was, along with a friend, killed while taking pictures of a Train in their hometown in Southern Wisconsin in 2005. She was only 17, and her friend 15? I forget. But she formed the largest PT fan group on Myspace at the time.
Steven later dedicated this and maybe 1 other song to her at a concert in Chicago where her parents actually I think were in attendance.
I ended signing Steven's guestbook on his website posting about what happened, and there was an investigation afterwards that the local media covered.
It's weird, but I associate this tune, the 1st Blackfield album, and actually the 1st Ours album Distorted Lullabies with the whole sad events that occurred with her death.
Regardless, it's a great track, 1 of the best songs of the 2000's and that Steven Wilson ever wrote.

Great song from a even greater album, the first Porcupine Tree album I ever bought. I agree with the previous commenter, I believe it's a banjo.

Yes, now that I see it in the comments, I’m certain it’s a banjo too…unfortunately didn’t come to me in the moment in the video! It’s my first Porcupine Tree album too, and therefore a really special one for me!

@@gaiaeternal5131 The funny thing is, I didn't really like the album upon first listen. In fact, I called it a failed experiment to find new music when a friend saw the CD and asked me about it. About 6 months later I pulled it back out and listened again and since then I've become a huge PT and Steven Wilson fan. I guess it had to grow on me.

Please, react to the Chilean band Los Jaivas and the songs La Poderosa Muerte, La Conquistada, Tarka y Ocarina and Canción del Sur. This is a band that was formed in 1963 and this month they celebrate 60 years of experience. His music unites folklore and progressive music in a unique and spectacular way...

This is PT song that turned me onto PT. I' m a big YES fan, but I heard Trains & I was hooked. Started listening to PT albums started with In Absentia. Love Steven Wilson. Just recently listened to the new PT album. They're still great IMHO.

I can't remember, but has she heard Marillion's Misplaced Childhood album yet?

Have you seen the live performance of Trains from the UK last month? Steven Wilson was so happy with the timing.
