  • Here is an original fingerstyle tinged slack key song I wrote a number of years ago called “Lily.” Hope you enjoy.
Code: LIVE 118 • Lily (Original Slack Key, 912ce)
Recorded with a Taylor 912ce (Rosewood/Spruce, with Elixir Nanoweb HD Light strings) and a Neumann TLM 102 microphone.

Many lovely melodic moments in this composition!

Very nice! Especially the chimes (harmonics). Like how you use a mic. Mics produce a fuller sound than pick ups.

Mahalo, Stan. I think mics are the way to go with acoustic guitar. Thanks for stopping by!

Your playing is very nice and your recording sound is really awesome. I need your advice, I want to purchase a mic to use for mainly recording acoustic guitar and some vocals here and there. Which do you recommend the Neumann or Edwina. I am mostly a strummer and want a nice tone with clear bass, smooth trebles and doesn't need much EQ as I will be using a standalone recorder. Thanks a lot.

Hi Jonah - I probably spend way too much time thinking about microphones, but I'll try to keep this short :-) First, I have a review of both of these mics for guitar / Taylors on my channels. In general, I favor the TLM102 as a recommendation. If you're rootsy / Americana and want to use the mic for live performance duty also, Edwina would be an excellent choice though. Both great mics. In addition, the TLM103 is something you might want to research - it has a good clear bass. Of those three mics, the 102 has the smoothest trebles, works well on a variety of instruments, and I find it hardly ever needs EQ. Your results may vary, and I don't have opinions on any of these as a vocal mic. I think Edwina/102/103 would all do well, but 102 is my default pick.

@@BlueSkyGuitar2 Thanks a lot. I think I will go for the TLM102 then and will def check the TLM 103. Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful response. Keep up the great playing.

Mahalo, August 🙏 Maybe one day I'll do the tab for this one. I just recalled I have some decade old hand written tabs for some simpler songs I wrote like Sunday Slack Key and Wake Up Slack Key (on my slack key playlist) floating around somewhere. Those songs aren't as technically challenging; not sure how good the tabs are either. I don't have tabs for any of my newer / flashier songs and arrangements though. Maybe one day. Anyway, Happy New Year to you also, and thanks for stopping by!

@@BlueSkyGuitar2 Just because a piece maybe simple that doesn't detract from it being nice. Personally I am trying to stay away from "knuckle busters" if you will since I cant really play them anymore after I broke my pinky finger. If you ever really want to challenge yourself with guitar and complexity of song take a look at Frederic Mesnier's channel, specifically Medieval Song (so called knuckle buster), and a few others he has that he didn't do videos on. But your music is just as nice and really enjoy listening to them, also would it be ok if slowly reverse engineering Iris?

Thanks - I'll check it out. There are a lot of amazing players on RUclips, and sometimes it's amazing / disheartening when you see things like an 8 year old playing Paganini behind her back :-) I learned a lot of slack key by figuring out songs off CD's back in the day. These days with RUclips, you can see people's hands and that makes it a little easier. Actually, the 'watch and learn' method is traditionally how slack key was often taught. If you want to learn Iris and even post your own cover, that is fine with me - please credit me in your description though. I prefer people don't post tabs of my songs for reasons I won't go into here, but if you want to tab it out for your own personal use that is also fine by me. Actually, I'm always humbled and honored when someone wants to learn one of my songs. The tuning for that song is taro patch, but 1st string is tuned down to C. That'll get you started. Good luck!

@@BlueSkyGuitar2 Thank you very much I appreciate it, and of course credit where credit is due and I completely understand the not wanting the distribution of your work, which is why I asked before I did and would never ever post anything regarding your property, when and if I get the tab done I will get in contact with you and send you a copy if you would like. I remember sitting with my uncle when I was a kid with a cd mixer pulling a few notes at a time off of a song constructing a tab, the good old days. So much easier seeing it done on RUclips now. Thank you again!

Ahh, the good old days. Sure, if you want to send a copy of the tab when you're done I'd be glad to see it!
