No one will ever sing this like Jessye. The pride, the controlled grief, the noble stoicism in the face of betrayal and despair. The Queen of Carthage.
I agree and I love listening to this, however her voice is a bit too rich for baroque. Baroque tends to have more fluid and light head voice where Jessye has more of bombastic area voice
The most beautiful rendition of Dido's Lament I have ever heard, Jessye Norman's dramatic soprano voice suits this dark and hauntingly beautiful song perfectly.
Her voice might be considered too "big" for baroque by some. But I still think Norman's interpretation is among the best. It is perfectly suited for the greatest of life's anguishes.
So do I cry when listening to her, she touches my heart, that dark sound pierces my feeling and they crumble in pieces and I shed of a deep feeling of sorrow
@@brookeggleston9314 I think it is OK (no, it even is better) to have different versions for different tastes. While I'm listening to LHL I rather like this. You are a perfect example for what JN once said when asked about her register: "pidgeonholes are for pidgeons". I always remember the quote when I listen to this performance, and I always remind the performance when I remember the quote, and I remember the quote so often. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
Jessye Mae Norman (September 15, 1945 - September 30, 2019). A pure genius, just devine talent and strength... Cannot listen to this peace without tears.
Absolutely beautiful! I can't hear this music without weeping and Jessye Norman's version is the is the most moving I have heard! Thank you for posting! 💐🌺🌹😪🎻🎶👍
I was never interested in opera. Just watched this video for my music class (that I must take)but WOW! So beautiful! So sad! So emotional! What kind of a human can ever have this voice??
¡¡ Qué maravilla Jessie !! Después de escuchar tu versión no puedo dejar de pensar durante todo el día, en tu voz , en tu presencia y en la bellísima dirección musical.
Eggleston, Can you sing this aria any better? This is not the place to suggest other interpretations. Jessye Norman is dead. Let us have our space to grieve, and especially if you cannot.
@@oboe2846 yes thank you for saying that to her. Let Jessye be great because she was and still is the greatest. No matter who sings this song and how well they sing it still won't compare to Jessye Norman.
She has a noble bearing and creates exactly the right musical mood. But I always felt her whole voice was calibrated about a quarter tone flat. Listen to the note on the word ‘rest’. RIP.
I don't care about the historical accuracy of this performance. Jessye Norman is a goddess here.
I'm not sitting in front of the computer crying, you're sitting in front of the computer crying.

So VERY TRUE
Please, don't forget fabulous Janet Baker!

@@christopheflubacher9050: Remembered Baker. But ‘No’!
She was absolutely amazing! I had a chance to see her live 37 years ago when I was in college. She met with the crowd backstage. Beautiful woman!
