  • The parts have arrived, and I begin re-assembly of this Stihl MS290 chainsaw. New bearings, new crankcase seals, piston, cylinder, and rings.

My name is Ian Grant first time watching your video I also repaired chainsaw Stihl brand just wanted to give an input I use aftermarket parts and they are great sometimes you get some that are not so great just want to those Chinese piston c-clip they are nothing more than a pair of junks some part of them is breaking off in the long run undamaged the cylinder head and piston it happened to me with those Chinese clip so I use the original one instead. Come in the original pissed and and they were great not to say that they cannot use you should cut off the little pointy part that stick up in the air that part is the problem

I have always loved Steve's videos starting with the rebuild of the Oliver's injector pump from a few years back, but thank you Steve for editing!! Makes them much better...keep up the good work!

I appreciate your comment acknowledging the editing. I, and many other you tube content providers spend many hours off camera doing editing. I try my best to cut out, or speed up boring sequences while still giving the gist of just whats involved on some of these procedures. Thanks for watching.

Never had a problem with Vostore piston/cylinder kits and I've installed many...

i believe that Stihl used Dirko sealant originally.

Thanks for the videos. I'm considering rebuilding my ms290 with a 49mm upgrade, and I am carefully considering an aftermarket kit like you have chosen.

I've done about 10 of those in the last couple of years, works very well and gives the saw more power. I generally modify the muffler for a little more air flow (don't get carried away) and I generally richen up the carburetor a bit..

Original equipment bottom end sealer is called Dirko. It works well but is kinda messy...

my 2 cents as a auto tech,i would use the permatex ultra black on the crankcase because i dont think what you used will seal very well. as many oil cans that you have, everything shouldve been lubed prior to installation to prevent a dry first start.

I just did this and one of the permatex 29132 said it was for chainsaw blocks

I had the same question as to those 2 ground wires. Mine completely fell apart when on disassembly

Just wish you would have talked your way through the installation of the piston into the cylinder bore. That’s where I am having problems.

Glad you got back on this one. I've been wondering about the kit. You don't oil those seals when installing? - Happy Father's Day.

I generally grease the seals with Stihl assembly lube and I put two stroke oil on the cylinder and piston rings and a bit on the main bearings.

Redundant ground wire is because the wires are close to the flywheel and sometimes they get cut by the flywheel so tuck the wires in away from the flywheel as much as you can.
