    0:17 Is that Arnold doing a rear lat spread? (and it actually looks pretty good too)
    This Arnold at his most massive. He had better aesthetics in 74 and 75 though.

    • @huss03
      @huss03 10 лет назад +1

      Wrong, this is not Arnold at his most massive. His best years were 73, 74, 75, with '74 being his most massive ever. He's only a kid here by modern pro BB standards...24 years old. He was however better here in '71 than he was in '72 - he got the timing wrong in '72, or didn't take it seriously enough, and Sergio scared the shit out of him. So in '73 he went back to work hard and brought a physique to the '73 Olympia stage that was so improved on every level it was almost a totally new Arnold. And, his body-fat levels were lower 73-75, which actually means that he was carrying more lean tissue. Prior to '73 he was never really cut.

    • @xaviervega468
      @xaviervega468 10 лет назад +4

      In terms of sheer mass he was bigger here than in 74, especially in the back and legs. He had better condition in 74 though.

      Huxxy i think in 72' there were a lot of distractions with the Olympics and the Mr. Olympia contest being held in Germany that year. You can imagine that this created a situation where Arnold spent a lot of time doing promotions and appearances in Germany/Austria, instead of 100% focusing on his training. In fact Arnold himself stated the he and Franco were lazy with their training that year, often cutting their workouts short by as much as half and he just didn't have the fullness and condition he was known for. Arnolds physique, more than anyone had that factor of just exploding to greater size when he flexed and it just didn't happen that year where he was kind of flat...

    For the record, Arnold's official weigh-in for the 1971 Mr. Olympia was 251.8 lbs and he still has a vaccum! Phil the fat gut Heath has a fat gut at 240 pounds (yes, I know Arnold dwarfed him by over 5 inches). This was the heaviest he had ever been for a Mr. Olympia and won it as well. Next heaviest, he was in 1974 when he weighed 246 pounds. His all time biggest was at the 1969 Mr. Olympia when he officially weighed in at 254 pounds.

      +TheLusianPopa Exaggerations. Arnold himself admits his ideal weight was 235. He weighed 225 in 1975 and it is widely believed only 215 in 1980,when he really had no legs or back.

      +bibbyshibby Everyone? Sergio had huge thighs in proportion to his huge upper body.

    • @Bayshuck
      @Bayshuck 8 лет назад +2

      +bibbyshibby I prefer the old guys too - the new chemically 'enhanced' shapeless messes do nothing for anyone, BUT,Sergio did have huge thighs and hamstrings in any era. Sergio's legs are far superior to today's guys due to genetic shape. They appear larger mid thigh than upper. With excellent calves too,and all under a tiny waist. Anyone thinking Sergio would be better with today's drugs needs to think again - he would be worse.

    • @Bayshuck
      @Bayshuck 8 лет назад

      +TheLusianPopa The most incredible pic probably of them all. Sergio built that physique without the 'aid' of gh or god knows what else today's fools take. While they get larger they lose any shape they had - their proportions are just terrible,and worst of all,their physiques are boring.

    the quality of this video is terrible, you can see in pictures taken from this contest that Arnold was FAR more ripped than he appears in the video. He had great vascularity in his arms, chest and even in his lats that just doesn't come through in this. He also showed delineation between his abs that I don't recall seeing in most of his other contests. I think that he is very near the condition he displayed in 74', maybe just slightly lacking in the leg/calf department compared to 74', but he may be slightly more massive in the upper body in 71', just in need of a few years of muscle maturity and not yet quite having the exaggerated bicep peak he developed later..

    Sergio and Franco were disqualified for entering the NABBA Mr. Universe in London that same year by the Weider Brothers, but allowed to guest pose. Getting suspended for entering that London contest was not worth the trip....they both lost, along with
    Frank Zane and Reg Park, to a Bill Pearl in top shape. Arnold planned to enter there also, but the Weiders told him it would be beneath an Olympia Champion to enter a Universe contest, and ordered him out of it or else, as he was under contract to Joe Weider.
    Which is why he won unopposed, although he was the best Bodybuilder that year just the same. Arnold wanted to beat Bill Pearl to establish himself as undisputed #1 in the World. From the Early 50's to the 60's, Reg Park and Bill Pearl were seen as the best, coming out of retirement every 5 or 7 years and nailing yet another Universe title.

    • @Bayshuck
      @Bayshuck 8 лет назад

      +Jim Lynch A ban brought in conveniently to keep Sergio out of the Olympia. Arnold competed in the same contest several times with no ban - Sergio decides to go and suddenly in comes the ban. As to Pearl being in top shape - he was podgy and 41 years old. He should never have won.

Pearl made a big show of letting everyone know it was his last contest, and the judges gave him a present. The decision nevertheless was one big joke.

  • @BurchTimothy
    @BurchTimothy 9 лет назад +5

    unopposed is being disingenuous. Sergio Oliva was there ready to compete but was not allowed to due to some argument he was having with the Weiders concerning not competing in other bodybuilding federations, I'm not sure but I think Franco Columbu was turned away for the same reason, so its not that Arnold was so dominant that no one dare waste their time attempting to dethrone him but instead that the IFBB chose to make a point to the competitors due to the IFBB(Weiders) turf war that was being waged against other Bodybuilding Federations which the IFBB eventually won with the last serious threat to IFBB(weider) Hegemony being in the early 90s with Vince McMahon's WBF(world bodybuilding federation) which was disbanded after only two years. Since then the IFBB has ruled the bodybuilding world with an Iron fist with no serious competitors in sight.

    • @Bayshuck

      +timothy burch Yes,the IFBB has ruled and what a job they've done. Look at the monstrosities that pass for bodybuilders today. Throw out anything with a gut,get back to mass PLUS aesthetics,as Sergio had in spades,and then bodybuilding contests just might be worth watching.

      I think that the rear lat spread was just not a pose that suited Arnold, similar to Flex Wheeler. It just didn't work for his structure. Also, Arnold tended to perform his back double bicep shot in a manner that displayed his muscularity and detail, especially in his lower back where he had a visible Christmas tree, rather than to emphasize his width. You can clearly see how wide his lats are in his front double bi pose, as well as his front lat spread. Arnold actually had excellent lower lat insertions which you can see in many of his poses.

      Arnold had great back development that emphasis on shape, detail and muscularity, but needed more mass. His back was not as impressive when doing the rear lat spread compared to Sergio because of his narrow frame and did not have the shoulder width to show case his lats to the fullest-that was a structural flaw, but when Arnold did his raised front double or back double bicep pose, his lats flared out like bat wings showing the full development of his lower lats.

      starforcefighter Actually, Arnolds shoulders were very wide, however, he had massively developed front delts that when seen front on, made him appear narrow. Guys like Steve Reeves had minimal front delt and max side delt, this gave them the illusion of width. If you ever see Arnolds shoulders from above, his thickness just amazes.

      It's interesting you mention Reeves, he had wide shoulders no doubt, but the type of shoulder development he had emphasized width. Reeves had well developed side delts and front delts that weren't heavily developed. This gave him a square shoulder look very favorable for bodybuilding. Arnold had a different type development. His side deltoids were massive, but so were his front delts, this gave him a rounded shoulder look when he stood relaxed. His shoulder width becomes apparent as he moves into a front lat spread for example. Zane also had the Reeves type development, really anyone with the square shoulder look has "weak" front delts. A interesting example of esthetics dominating over theory, in theory, every muscle is to be thoroughly developed, in reality esthetic considerations lead another way.

      I have to respectively disagree. A good indicator of frame size/shoulder width is chest span, the space between the shoulders. As you can see from the video, the span is quite substantial for Arnold. He also filled that span, that area, with a massive amount of muscle too (especially in comparison to Reeves). More massive pecs, and rounded shoulders, decrease the relaxed impact (especially in photos). Arnold was just a massive guy. I've posted a photo of him hulking Olivia at the '72 Olympia, Arnold just dwarfs him as he stands behind him. Gives you a good idea of how massive he was. Olivia was another with the square shoulder set up (more front and side delt than Reeves though), still the same basic shape.
