Mayon Volcano Eruption Update; Strong Earthquake Swarm Occurs, Lava Avalanches Continue

  • On two recent days, the Mayon volcano produced more than 100 daily volcanic earthquakes. Since Mayon is already erupting, this has led to some people speculating that a new batch of magma might be moving underneath the volcano. However, I disagree with this assessment, and will explain my own opinion on what caused these quakes. Additionally, as the eruption of Mayon enters its 23rd day we now have an updated and more accurate lava flow map.

      I live pretty near (kind of but I still live kilometers but my aunt lives in Guinobatan which is pretty near). They said that its pretty much a drill for them and they're used to it. Still the ash accumulation in their houses are still a pain to clean especially some children have asthma. Luckily it rained this past few days so the risk of ash inhalation isn't a concern now. The only problem now is the damages that the ash caused to their crops. There's still more to salvage but they're experiencing considerable losses.

      An expanding gass pressure with no escape can pose a huge danger. Learned it the hard way when I tried to play as a kid in our shope and tried to inflate an old tire lying around on my father's shop that I'm going to use for our pool. Had near death experience when the shrapnels of the tire made a near miss fly by on the side of my face. Luckily I walked a way without a scratch. Got slap marks on my butt though because I "tried to help" in the shop without my dad's consent.

      Water in magma is in the gaseous state.

    • @kswsquared
      @kswsquared Год назад +5

      The viscosity of lava is more to do with its inherent Silica content. The lower the silica, the more fluid the lava is. Groundwater doesn't mix with the magma directly since it gets superheated and turns to steam, but an additional hazard is created through phreatic eruptions since the superheated water becomes highly explosive.

    So is the reason this lava flow is moving so slow because it's silica rich(rhyolite, andesite) or because the flow is little and not pumping fast enough?

    • @michaeldeierhoi4096
      @michaeldeierhoi4096 Год назад +2

      The viscosity of the lava determines how fast it flows. And the flow is determined by the silica level. Basalt is low compared to Andesite, then dacite and finally rhyolite which has the highest level of silica. And the higher the silica level the more explosive a volcano can be. That is because a more viscous lava tends to clog up a volcano vent resulting in an increase in gases in the lava. And that gas pressure will increase until an eruption occurs. This volcanoes with more silicic lava tend to be more explosive.

    • @knightmarefishing
      @knightmarefishing Год назад

    So with all those earthquakes, we should see some information surface (see what I did there) about the active tectonic plate movement and a statement regarding how much the island has moved closer to another body of land right?
    I'm not holding my breath, because we always hear that volcanic activity is the result of plate shift and it's brought up when the explanation for plate shift theory is talked about but when we talk about an eruption of a volcano we seem to mention plate shift only briefly along with fault lines.
    I honestly would have thought that when we have an active volcano on an island, we would be keeping a vigilant eye on the exact location of the island in question! Surely there must finally be empirical evidence of actual plate movement?
    Because either tectonic plate shift theory is true and correct and volcanism is the result of this or there's something else that's the driver behind volcanoes and we don't really know what that process is because we have stopped looking...
    You know, it's exactly like religion when you have a question but you have been told to have faith...
    Is it ethical to ever stop asking questions? I really hope not!
