This was empowering for me, and yes - I was smiling, then subvocally assenting then just laughing in how much I agree with you. Be as you are and do as you will!
You've convinced me. I was marginally interested in Wicca as a teen but it never felt right to me because I felt the need to work in my Mormon heritage (which is, itself, based on the magical worldview and folk magic of 19th century New England). Now I'm not even Mormon anymore, but I've come full circle back to my interest in witchcraft and reclaiming my heritage and it so happens I am a working folklorist, so this feels like a direction I can take. Thanks for all the book recommendations and videos! I am devouring as many as I can and I'm so excited to see where this goes!
The only thing on the list that didn't apply to me was having a staff or stang. I use a wand because I'm usually confined to a smaller or indoor space, or needing to be more discreet, but also symbolically it has properties I associate with air (yes I'm one of those people who use the wand for air and the athame for fire. Also the chalice is water and the cauldron is earth). Also I notice that the elements tend to shift on the compass depending on where I live and the weather patterns. It totally depends on your environment and what is normal weather there, it might even shift depending on the season. For me the north is water, the east is fire, the south is air and the west is earth because it rains most often and severely from the north, the sun rises from the east, the strongest winds blow from the south and the mountains close by are in the west.
I think I hit most of these boxes. I don’t use a stang (atleast not at this time). I do celebrate the wheel of the year primarily the equinoxes and solstices. Some traditional witches I’ve talked to do actually work with the Christian devil from who I’ve talked to some of them believe the witch devil can be multifaceted. Thank you so much for sharing this! ♥️
Hi Teia, thanks for sharing your 13! Just discovered your channel and looking forward to exploring your videos! So great to hear from another canadian trad witch :)
I really like this video. I agree with a lot of the "signs" you shared. I think the "practice" and "doing" and living the relationship between ourselves and nature intrigue me more than anything religious and "you MUST do it this way without a reason why." Thanks for sharing!
This is definitely a very interesting video! i've been interested in a more traditional witchcraft as i'm not really into astrology, tarot and a lot of these new age practices that i see a lot on tiktok. i like learning about folklore, demonology and i feel such a strong connection with nature. any tips on how i can do this? definitely want to feel like an oldschool witch, that goes into a forest and connects with the earth, if that makes sense
I think you need to forge your own path, do the things you feel connected to…spend time in the forest connecting with the earth!! And take some time to study & learn about Traditional Witchcraft, maybe it’s a good fit for you 😊
Baneful magic is not my cup 🍵 of tea. Christopher Lee said you will not only lose your mind, but you'll lose your soul. Israel Regardie echoed that sentiment.
A very interesting list that fits me to a T. The one thing that stood out above the rest was the staff over a wand. I've made a lot of wands but the one I use 99.9% of the time is my staff it just feels right, if you know what I mean. Blessings
My directions are... Different "Western" E-air N- earth S- Fire W- water "Traditional" N- Air S. Earth E. Fire W. Water Me: N- Air S-fire (N/S is the masc. Axis) W- water E- Earth (W/E is the feminine axis)
i connect with some wiccan values but also traditional witchcraft. i see my witchcraft as more of a lifestyle than religion and just go with what i feel like. i do however agree with trying to avoid hexing and the “bad” for the most part, so what could i be considered? i’m a little newer with this
Sounds to me like you’re still finding your path, and that’s ok! It takes time to figure it all out and explore all the options until you find something that rings true. ❤️
There is no “right” way to assign the directions/elements. In Wicca they follow the Western Esoteric tradition for the most part. Trad craft tends to assign them based upon either the way I mentioned OR according to the place where you live (I.e. if a large lake is to the south of your location, you might choose south as the direction for water.)
You know, I’m really struggling with how to respond to this. Because I TOTALLY get what you’re saying, and I understand. But we live in a patriarchal society in which the default is male gendering, male is the neutral default. And in witchcraft female is the default, why? Because witches are predominantly female. Are there male witches? YES! But statistically, witches are more often female, so if Witch is a gender neutral term, why can’t the default be female? Just as the default I must live with in mundane life is male.
@@TeiaKennedy I love this response. I also thought about how in many occult circles, magick itself is considered a feminine practice within the masculine/feminine energy model. But hey, if someone is offended by the default use of she/her pronouns when referring to witches, they probably ought to educate themselves a little on how society has failed to address the exclusion of women and girls at just about every juncture as far back as history has been recorded...
As an American, then the American constitution doesn't really apply to me as it never used the female pronoun nor mentions women. Just because men aren't used, you are implied. Welcome to a woman's world.
Initiated - yes, by who - no one you’d know, Roy Bowers is the mundane name of Robert Cochrane, the founder of the Clan of Tubal Cain. Nice try though?

Why are the directions and elements different? Which is correct?
There is no “right” way to assign the directions/elements. In Wicca they follow the Western Esoteric tradition for the most part. Just saying I like the list but really wish people would stop referring to witches as female always. Some of us are dudes.

@@TeiaKennedy because witches don’t have defaults.

1. Are you initiated? 2. Who initiated you? 3. Any idea who Roy Bowers is at all? Otherwise this is really very embarrassing.
