Nicole Kidman is just an awkward woman who just found out on National TV that the "one that got away" might have liked her back. So she splits between trying to make him admit he rejected her because he wasn't interested (because that makes her life easier), and trying to prove she doesn't like him anymore. She loves her husband, but she's still got a crush on Jimmy, and she's shy and awkward ANYWAY... so that leads to extra awkwardness. It's all natural weirdness, it just happens to be taking place on National Television... which adds to the nerves and makes it even more awkward. That would make her life easier, because she could just say "Never gonna happen" and move on. "What if" likely has her imaginative brain spinning scenarios.
