Hey Graham some of your assumptions about the program are wrong and wanted to clear it up for everyone. I live in DC and am currently using the same program it's called HPAP. They provide downpayment assistance like she said. HOWEVER that townhome is either an ADU (affordable dwelling unit) or an inclusionary zoning unit which are separate programs. No way you can touch a 2bd 2 bth townhome in shaw for 250k. Also if that is an ADU or IZ unit the appreciation is essentially non existent because when she goes to sell it she will have to sell it below market value. The value is decided by what the city deems appropriate for other low income individuals. She will not get fair market value for the home because she didnt pay fair market value. It's still a great deal because she gets to live in a safe neighborhood for cheap but her home did not appreciate 500k over the year or 2 shes been in it.
To hop on this a bit: student loan forgiveness is not always a good program, and a lot of the time actually hurts the person more than paying off the loan. Not only will she have to make payments on that loan for 10 years, but when it is "forgiven" she will also have to pay taxes on the amount that is forgiven.
Good information about the restrictions on her home. Basically this is a result of gentrification and trying to ensure the neighborhood remains mixed income

No offense. I dont understand why women spend a lot on their nails. I grow mine out (not too long) and I just paint them. Is it more about treating yourself or do you really need to get them professionally done for the office? (I'm a uni student, pre-health so our nails need to be basic, but I also work in an office and herd no one talk bad about my nails).
asdf ghjk I think getting your nails done at a shop can depend a lot on the culture you’re around often but a lot of people go to get a more semi-permanent top coat like gel or acrylic so the nails don’t have to be polished weekly. Also, those prices would be for more high-end shops or shops that are in densely populated cities.
@@asdfghjkl-oo7lv Definitely not- super done up, long, bright colored nails are usually frowned upon in most office jobs. They want your nails to look nice and presentable, which can be done at home with a $10 bottle of neutral coloured polish and a nail clipper and nail filer. I think "needing to get them done for the office" is kind of an excuse that people use to justify spending that much. Even when I worked in a retail store that required employees to look "pretty", and all my coworkers had their nails done, kept mine plain and it was never an issue.
@@missfrosty98 yup i just kept mine presentable when I worked at corporate and it was never an issue. I saved a lot of money not getting them done (I did them at home and its was therapeutic). Every girl is like 🙄 with the hair comments... A lot of guys don’t understand how much it costs to maintain our appearance. It’s an investment in ourselves. And totally worth it.
I’m a frugal as hell beauty editor and believe in DIY and supporting (read: getting inexpensive services) beauty schools when I can but please remember that women and especially women of color are held to higher standards when it comes to looks. D.C. is an extremely conservative city style-wise and looking polished comes at a huge premium. Services for women are just more expensive across the board (check out the recent outraged reporting on AOC’s totally normal haircut costs), but depending on your job, you can’t exactly forgo or do at home. CA and NY just passed the CROWN act preventing discrimination based on mainly ethic hairstyles. Sucks, but it’s a thing 😕

"Property taxes here are just through the roof." "I wish L.A. would have programs like that...like the 'Mansion Affordability Act'...we're gonna give you $400,000 as your down payment." Well, in fairness, a program like the latter is likely to lead to making the former even worse...
They do have a program in LA but you'd probably have a hard time making payments on an LA house if you made the household income they require you to have to qualify based on average house prices here. The downpayment loan does have a shared appreciation component where if you sell for more than you paid the city gets part of that.

Coming into work with chipped nail polish, especially in a lot of white collar fields - think consulting, IB, etc - is unprofessional.
@@jakeblalock9719 what's that got to do with what I said?
thanks for this info because i was in disbelief lol. 250k in shaw? there's nothing below 800k for sale right now
Good information about the restrictions on her home. Basically this is a result of gentrification and trying to ensure the neighborhood remains mixed income
Kinda bs that a program is helping an already well off person afford an already nice house. She doesn't seem like the target income for handouts
Millennial money comes out 8 minutes early... No time to add creamer now
😂😂😂
I agree. She took great advantage of the opportunities around her. I’m in a tough spot in my life, but she inspires me to keep pushing and be a successful woman.
Graham, a black woman would never do her hair and nails every other month....you just don't understand lol
soiceyboy33 I was literally just about to say this, but I can’t expect my boi graham to know this type of stuff
I'm natural and do my own hair and nails. I get my hair professionally done maybe 1-2x a year
Probably true, although I'm white, I live outside of DC and I'm sure she could save a lot of money if she went to salons outside of DC! The salons in the city are outrageous because they are near the neighborhoods where millionaire politicians and lobbyists live!
Oh and don't even get me started on these outrageously prices gyms around here lol. We have an orange theory right by my campus where all the rich kids go
@@kutie216 Does she not pay any Fed tax? How can you make $80k and take home 6k/mth?
abraye92 Same!
She CANNOT cut her hair budget. It’s a cultural thing. That’s actually low for most black women fyi 🙂🙂
RUclips recommended the CNBC video. Me: "let's see if Graham Stephan already reacted to it" -> skips watching the CNBC video and starts watching Graham Stephans instead.
Yup haha
I do my own nails but it's normal for a black women to spend $100 a month on hair depending on the hair type lol. Amazing video tho!
No it’s not...
@@nanayai1656 That's why I have braids during college haha
Graham, college was free because she had a scholarship. Her 100 k debt is for graduate school, not college (undergrad)

$30 gel kits on Amazon are cheaper and yield the same results as getting my nails done once at a 2 star nail salon.
Marry me
"The mansion affordability act" made me literally LOL
So we not gonna talk about how Graham switched to black coffee?
Now it’s like 10 cent iced coffee.
He hasn’t gotten to the store yet to buy more.
Subsidizing the price increase of his gym membership, and cutting out creamer to pay for it 🤣🤣
Sees $1,800 in debt repayment per month...
*Dave Ramsey has left the chat*
I spend $40 to get my nails done once a month and I feel sooooo bad lol
oof
Homie really out here saying “misk” instead of “miscellaneous” 💀

She's most likely spending $60 every 2 weeks on nails. That's about standard unfortunately.
@@Himawariyoung so is this the norm in the corporate world?
Now I'm in healthcare and they advise us to not be as neutral as possible so I just use clear polish on them.
Graham is gonna be in millennial money then flame himself while reacting to it

Liked before I even watched the video, that’s how much I love this series.
That is exactly what she is saying Graham. Her purchasing that home in Shaw is MONEY............DC values increase exponentially. Incredibly smart young lady. I wish I would have done that when I was making $40k I feel like crying real tears! 😩😩😩
Look at all the non-black experts on black women hair. So what shampoo do you recommend again?
Not just her hair, but her way of life in general. I viewed the segment and don't remember her asking for any advice from the peanut gallery including Graham. I guess folks can't live their lives 'cause they're too busy living others'.
You don’t need pro nails to work a professional job.
A black woman was the topic so judgement and stereotypes were expected. Black hair is very triggering apparently
Four Seasons I mean she signed up to do a video people are allowed to have opinions lmao
Lauren Radford people are allowed to have opinions even when their ignorant on subjects they know NOTHING about. Sounds just like entitlement.
*WHEN is the CNBC collab coming?*
Graham: I don't get my eyebrows done, this is free.
Me: Weird flex but ok.
Every time Graham assumes the amount shown on millenial money is gross, his guest always tell him, "nope sorry, all net"
yeah I think its gross based on her spending
I love your videos. I’m on a no-buy through the end of the year to pay off my medical debt, and your intense scrutiny helps me maintain enough shame to stick to it. Thank you so much. Your severity is exactly what I need in my life. #kindredspirits #typeB+personality
You should do a video breaking down your 7 years of spending, how it changed, and your overall perspective
Millennial money should invite graham on for an episode to share his budget
There are down payment assistance programs in quite a few urban areas. In Atlanta there are 14 alone.. Based on income, condition and location.
honestly, any time I buy something slightly overpriced, In the back of my head I think "dang Graham would be yelling at me right now" and I don't know what you've done to me

A lot of subsidies for someone to live her lifestyle. We get no government subsidies and I can’t afford her lifestyle. And I didn’t have a cool home home like that at her age. That said, I am happy for her. Hope she can save plenty of money in the future and her retirement.
One last thing, the book club thing sounds super awesome.
"Property taxes here are just through the roof."
"I wish L.A. would have programs like that...like the 'Mansion Affordability Act'...we're gonna give you $400,000 as your down payment."
Well, in fairness, a program like the latter is likely to lead to making the former even worse...
They do have a program in LA but you'd probably have a hard time making payments on an LA house if you made the household income they require you to have to qualify based on average house prices here. The downpayment loan does have a shared appreciation component where if you sell for more than you paid the city gets part of that.
Getting your nails done is expensive. I'm glad that's never been anything I was interested in. Getting your hair done is also expensive
Anne Day what’s there to look or comment on if your nails are plain. Guys nails are plain that’s regular. But the cosmetic things you do as a lady should be for yourself.. no one else
You have single handedly changed my entire Financial life and mindset with your channels. Thank you so much. Above and beyond. You literally have gifted me with a major shift in financial perspective.

Graham, you are the only RUclipsr that I like all of their videos and watch all the ads (except 30+ second ads, i skip those lol)
DC is as expensive or more than LA. This lady did an amazing investment in an upcoming area in shaw when it was up and coming. DC has a ton of investments for real state man you should look at it
Wow! This woman is inspired me to search up first time home buyer assistant programs in my state. 🙌🏾 Genius idea!
Graham goes to a boujie Equinox gym when he could be paying a lot less at other gyms..
Justin Samson then laughs at what other people slightly indulge in. Sorry he needs the guilt of $100+ a month to motivate him to get a workout in. To most a local $15-$30 a gym is more than enough.

Good for you! Wonder why more women don't do this
@@pkal244 Because nails aren't the same. If you're not getting tips, you can do them yourself (if you're decent). If you work in an environment where tips and/or gel nails are expected, you should go to someone professionally.
@@akieragilbert7218 I'm going to go out on a limb and say there is no environment where gels or tips are expected. If you're a sales clerk at Sephora then maybe, but even then you or a coworker should be able to do it on the house.
@@pkal244 There are quite a few actually. Tips - not necessarily (but many women get gel tips), but gel nails are a standard now in many fields. Regular nail polish that you can put on yourself can chip very quickly (I'm talking within a few hours of doing it, even if you put on a top coat). Coming into work with chipped nail polish, especially in a lot of white collar fields - think consulting, IB, etc - is unprofessional. Unless you're doing your nails every day or two, many women would prefer to just get gel or powder nails, which last longer. They are also much more expensive.
@Anne Day fully agree. I've worked for and in multiple Fortune 500 companies, and now I interview people for a tech company in Manhattan. At no point in my career have I noticed someone's nails and decided that they were right fit the job based on that. My wife works at a much more professional place than I do (suits & biz pro attire) and she agrees with you.
I love your energy Graham! Your videos are so engaging!
I saw this video in my recommended and I said NO I am waiting for graham to react to this
Graham! You gave me the best idea for YOUR show. You said you've been using mint for 7 years. You also say frequently that you don't spend more even though you make more. I think it would be super cool to do an episode on your personal wealth vs lifestyle inflation over the last 7 years. Obviously it would be crazy to be spending zero extra dollars now that your making over a million a year. But to see in real numbers and real "categories" of spending how your habits have changed along with your income change...that would be a great video. In my opinion.
I never thought doing your nails and watching Graham will be in the same sentence
I enjoy how excited you are whenever a new millenial money video comes out. That "whoooop" at the start LOL
How does he not know that a black women’s hair is nothing like his hair? ?????
Lol. This.
Bonnie I’m not a black woman and even I was, like ‘wow! 100$ is great!’
I felt this. Graham needs some black friends in his life 😆
Its not the hair maintenance costs of a black women. Its the need of some black women to try and have a hair style other then natural. Some of the most beautiful black women that I have seen go natural. Its the extensions and the straightening that costs money. Just like a white women getting a perm to get curls....not a necessary cost.
