    • @harlanjenkins3869
      @harlanjenkins3869 5 лет назад +10

      Actually its a pretty simple process.... all you have to do is press the two red handles on the front of the mask, which sends air through the mask assy harness, which is what opens the harness....once you donn the mask and place it against your mouth and release the handles the harness will tighten against your head at that point. You can adjust it at will in this way, but will take a small amount of oxygen out of your crew cylinder with each breath and each adjustment

    Below 10,000 feet is breathable air.

    • @elweewutroone
      @elweewutroone 2 года назад +6

      Don oxygen masks. Turn on seat belt signs and seat cabin crew (turn on no smoking sign if available). Disconnect autothrottle. Decrease thrust to idle. Begin descent to 10,000 ft / FL100 or minimum safe altitude, whichever is higher. Increase speed to VMO - 10 or MMO - 0.01, whichever is lower, unless structural concerns are present. Extend speedbrakes. Change heading to 45 degrees off-track or parallel the airway. Declare emergency to ATC.
      When close to target altitude, retract speedbrakes, and lower speed to 250 KIAS or lower if required. Increase thrust (and activate autothrottle).

    It amazes me that it took over 2 minutes for the crew to put on their O2 masks when they knew they had a pressurization problem at altitude, and so robotically waited for a magic "10k-ft" cabin altitude warning to recite memory items. As someone who's also in the simulator every 6 months, the very first thing we do with pressurization issues or smoke/fumes in the cabin is to don the masks. Everything else is secondary. While I'm sure this is a professional crew going through the motions they're taught, I'm still baffled that it took 2 minutes. Didn't the Payne Stewart crash teach us anything?

    As a former steward on 747s I have to say that if I heard 'hissing' on a door the last place I'd stand to phone the flight deck was by the door. Interesting that no announcement was made for passengers and crew to affix seatbelts before they commenced rapid descent. And what happened to the steep, banking dive down to breathable air? A lack of misting, I understand (mist isn't cheap), but I always thought flight simulators were much more realistic than this. Also, in the event of a depressurisation, isn't it standard procedure these days put oxygen masks on immediately? If I remember rightly, at climbing altitudes of over just 10,000 feet, the pilots can have as little as 15 seconds before hypoxia begins to affect your judgement and concentration, from which point a person will begin to lose vital decision making capabilities.

      Might be company policy to NOT set 7700 - I heard a lot of diversions where crew declared an emergency on ATC (usually medical) but did NOT squawked 7700 (flightradar showed a normal squawk throughout the flight). I believe some companies tell their pilots to not set it, unless it's really critical (pressurisation issue IS a serious problem, but quite controllable usually - unless everything explodes).

    In *my* opinion, with the possibility of an imminent pressurization issue (a hissing door alone would not prompt this thinking but, in conjunction with a climbing cabin altitude, it would), I'd call for "masks on" almost immediately. If there is an explosive or rapid decompression, you're already covered, and although at 40ish thousand feet, useful consciousness is about 15 seconds, the step of placing your mask on is already complete. A cabin pressure problem would also prompt an emergency descent (as demonstrated in the video) which, in it's self poses a distraction during a high stress situation; this would add one more step in the "masks on" initiative. If the decompression stabilizes, and the emergency descent is in process or complete, no harm done; if the decompression becomes explosive, you're covered already. In conclusion, I would call for "masks on" MUCH earlier, then call for the QRH, QRC, or DRILL items.
    Having experienced the symptoms in a decompression chamber during my accident investigation training, it became very obvious that the SLOW decompression is exponentially more dangerous than an explosive one simply because it's harder to notice. If the symptoms of hypoxia start, the master warning/caution lights/sounds will be less evident, thus I ask - why wait?

    • @markomdeutschi628
      @markomdeutschi628 6 лет назад +1

      Probably a standard procedure. You only have about 15 minutes of oxygen and the checklist or the memory items do not recommend oxygen masks until the cabin altitude is over 10000 feet. Pilots are trained for situations like that. There are systems to monitor the pressurization and pilots know them. So even if the decompression is rapidly or unnoticed the pilots will get an alert in the cockpit if the pressurization is low. The first step when there is an low pressurization alert is to put on the masks. So I don't see a point why they need to immediately put on the masks. You only need them if the pressure in the cabin is low. Also the monitoring system is reliable. There was never a fatal accident because of the monitoring system.

      depends on the altitude. if the ambient pressure is low enough (one fifth of normal atmospheric pressure) 100% oxygen is not a problem. actually then anything but 100%oxygen is a problem.

    I wonder if Cabin Crew Can call the flight deck on the inter phone if the flight crew have oxygen masks on? The Pilots can't speak into the phone or easily hear through it.Or does inter phone have an emergency feature where it goes through the cockpit speakers?

    • @YouTube.TOM.A
      @YouTube.TOM.A 7 лет назад

      YES, cabin interphone communication can be routed to the mask microphone and crews normally use the cockpit speaker or put their ear pieces back in their ears. During this procedure there normally is no back and forth, between cabin and cockpit.

    About 85 seconds of no crew communication during early-mid stages of descent. If there had been a problem with their O2 they may not have ided it and got hypoxic imo. It has happening in the past.
