Thank you for watching! Hope you enjoyed creating your own Ludovico Einaudi style music on piano. Let me know if you would like more videos on composition techniques of any other styles of music!
The thing with Einaudi is that, over the years, I've come across many critiques and people (coming from classical tradition, especially contemporary composers) bash him for the simplicity of his music and how formulaic it is but I have yet to come across a single composer, who does what Einaudi does so well and can create hauntingly beautiful music like him. Of course I come across a single musical piece every now and then from a contemporary composer but that's just it. None of them have a repertoire as impressive as Einaudi. Recently, David Bruce - the composer, attempted to compose a piece in the style of Einaudi on his RUclips channel and in my opinion, he failed miserably. Simplicity is easy to understand but can sometimes be very difficult to create.
Wow! This is the best piano tip I got so far, in 2023! This went from thinking "How does Einaudi do it?" to actually being able to create your own beautiful melodies. Thanks, Tom, you've really made my day!
That's fantastic to hear! I'm thrilled that you found the tip so valuable and that it's helping you create your own beautiful melodies. Music is all about self-expression, and it's a joy to know that this guidance has brought you closer to that goal.
I’m working on Einaudi pieces… i love his work. Is incredible how he is able to do so much with so less… I’m practicing a piece that is 12 min long and although the left hand is very easy hes able to make a 12min piece that doesn’t bore me at all 😂 it’s very emotional music i find 😊
I discovered Einaudi 20 years ago and was blown away.Saw him in concert years ago and took my wife.As a heavy rock chick she was blown away by the beauty of the music . The beauty lies in the silence between notes
Haha yeah heavy rock or metal can allso be very emotional and beautifull that's why many of us kind of appreciate all of the songs that touch our heart.
This is something I work with daily and watching you execute the twist with the F (1564) and move to a Dm, Bflat, F, C was really cool. Thank Much ...Love It!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this. Just started doing my own Einaudi impersonation and having a ton of fun with it. I will certainly take some of the ideas in this video and give it a try! Thanks loads Tom!!!!
You keep doing it Tom with another interesting session. Making difficult things look less difficult when they are broken down as you are able to demonstrate. You certainly are giving me plenty to work on. You are also introducing me to musicians I have never heard of. Thanks for another brilliant class.
wow this video was so great :) it really helped me a lot. this is such a good starting point to learn improvising on the piano. Thank you so much for your content and please keep making such great videos :) Greetings from Austria
Does your school have online courses. I am a self leaner and prefer that. I really love your style. Very easy to follow and understand. Plus I love improvising. These lessons are really good. If you don’t have online lessons. You should consider it.
Yes, we have two very powerful online courses. 30 Day Jazz Musician and The Complete Musician. You can enquire about both of them at www.contemporaryschoolofpiano.com.
Every now and then I come back to this video to see if some of you guys dropped a link to one of your compositions on that style, but you never do. PLEASE COMPOSE "EINAUDLY" AND DROP THE LINK haha PS. Tom, you rock!
I usually don't write in the Einauldi style but I have a piece of my own that's a little similar : open.spotify.com/track/0ymmDwdC0rLUnbCuE9i7jc?si=4c645faf789440cd
Another great video. Thank you. Oh and can you tell me what happened to the book OSS the back. There was a light or something under that bench. And then the book fell. Weird
I just noticed it, it is weird actually, I never saw that before. It's my beloved Chopin book "Chopin: pianist and teacher" - an incredible book about how Chopin approached his teaching, and he was an exceptional teacher, not just a pianist.....I can't explain what happened there ..... thanks for bringing it to my attention....
Sounds like a book I should get. At first I thought maybe a cat. I thought the light was a reflection of a cats eye. Maybe Chopin is speaking to you. ❤
Godard's movie Weekend has a music virtuoso performing in the countryside who observes that Mozart is too simple for children and too hard for virtuosi. So all parallel dominants now?
I don't think Mozart is too simple for children - that comment has just a bit too much Hollywood to it, rather than reality. Otherwise, every child would be playing Mozart concerti with ease. But I would say Mozart's music, has a child-like innocence to it, but underneath the innocence is an incredible complexity and intensity. A bit like a very fine wine. Easy to drink, but still complex...
Not surprising that Ludovico Einaudi's music is similar to Adele. If you knew Einaudi's background, it would make sense as he loves different types of music, from popular to classical to jazz. Einaudi embraces different perspective and cultures ... Have a listen to Ludovico Einaudi feat. Mercan Dede & Hugh MarshLa Musica dei Cieli (The Music of Heaven); or his collaboration under the name of Whitetree (Cloudland). Simple doesn't means easy and most that play his music are unable to grasp the nuances in his performance which also makes his music very special ... much like a singer with a vocal style such as Adele. I am happy that you appreciate his "CANTABILE ..." technique. Einaudi is also a wonderful improviser ....
Thanks for the suggested pieces. Many of the Einauldi pieces use popular piano progressions but packaged in a classical way. I definitely hear that most in his music. It's interesting you mentioned he is also influenced by jazz. I notice no influence of jazz in his music, the harmonies are so clean there are no dissonance or any jazz progressions, but if you recommend any pieces that are influenced by jazz I'd be fascinated in hearing them! He has definitely mastered his niche.
It's a Roland RD 2000, but I'm using a software sound module. (I'm a sound quality audiophile, the RD 2000 in-built sounds are fantastic, but VST software has the edge!)
I wish I could understand the appeal of Einaudi's music - and good luck to all those who want to copy the style. If you regard endlessly repeated arpeggios, motifs and banal modulations as musically satisfying, well, what can I say. As for me, I think watching paint dry would be more stimulating. Just saying.
Hi Roger. Yes, it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea! As a music education specialist, it's not the best practice to comment on students' taste in music. I've had many students over the years start with Einauldi and develop their tastes with further examples including Arvo Paart, Gorecki, and Phillip Glass. Regarding teaching this music, I don't see the point in teaching a student to blindly follow the score or sheet music when they can see how simple the formulas behind the music are. This generally is a more effective way to help a music enthusiast develop their musical awareness and progress their musical tastes and abilities.
@contemporaryschoolofpian I would never comment on a student's tastes in music but I think that all students should be encouraged to explore different genres and formulate aesthetic judgements. It comes with age and experience but if I'd not explorer beyond the music of Handel as a boy, I would have remained fixated by the Baroque and denied the adventure of every composer thereafter. It's hoe we grow. Emotionally. Musically. A diet of Einaudi is like bread and jam and blunts the palate.

Yes, and actually very similar approaches are used most of the time, as it's broadly a similar style of writing.
Also, All of Me sounds just like Nuvole Bianche.
The same chords too!!
