Debt-free boat tiny home for family of 3 on Portland island

  • Jane and Tony had lived on a sailboat when they were child-free and loved it, so when their landlord raised the rent on their 960-square-foot apartment by 19%, they decided they wanted to avoid payments and they started thinking about boats again. Though this time it would be with their 5-year-old daughter.
    When they started looking at boats on craigslist they found a lot on offer. After looking at over 40 boats, they settled on a 43-foot Chris Craft Corinthian for just $14,000.
    After the initial investment in their 46-year-old boat (it needed some work), they pay less than $400 per month in slip fees which includes the mooring, as well as electricity and water. They're hooked up to the Internet and have cable tv. The only convenience they're missing is a flush toilet (they use an electric one which has to be pumped out).
    Jane and Tony say that their families don't fully understand their choice to make a boat their home, but for the couple they wouldn't feel right living any other way.
    Original story: faircompanies.c...
    A postscript from Jane: "About a month after this was filmed, we were motoring on the river and split a seam. Our boat sank, taking with it everything we owned. Thank God none of us were hurt, but it did put us in the scary position of being homeless."

    When I was a teenager, we were homeless and I never knew it. Family of 6, my dad bought a river boat/house boat that was kinda like a studio apartment on the water. It was a 35 footer, $10 a foot for the slip fee, and my dad made it work for us for the three years it took to get a home. I loved that life, it was fantastic. My brother and I had various dinghies that we would row around the harbor and take to the beach. We had to live in close quarters sure, but dad did what he had to to keep us off the streets, in our schools, and made it seem like we were just having a nautical adventure in our lives. Never once did he tell us we were homeless, until we we were adults and realized what he had to do for us. We weren’t the only family either in the water. It’s a viable life style, and one I dream of doing again now that I am an adult. My siblings agree, these were the best years of our lives. We grew apart when we lived in a house, but for 3 years on the water, sharing very little space, we were best friends. I am glad my dad was quick thinking after we lost our home. I would be a very different person had I not lived on a boat.

      Best thing I've heard in the past year! We never had to lived on a boat or in a tiny house (although I wouldn't mind) but we did homeschool for about a decade. Those were the best years of my life. My kids (mostly adults) agree and talk about "the good old days" often.

      Excellent story. THANKS for sharing. I wouldn't say U guys were homeless at all during your time on the boat, a "home" is a "a place" of sentimental value. It can be anywhere. A "house" is tangible and it takes people to make it into a "home". Your Dad provided a SUSTAINABLE "home" that happened to be on a boat. Nothing wrong with that. He was smart enuff to get off of the grid.

    My family lived on a 40x15 foot monk for 3 years while I was in high school. Some of the best memories are from that time. It was 2 adults, 2 children, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 parakeets. We had fun rowing out in the dingy all year long. Used bathrooms and showering up on land in a building. This was in the 80's. Our boat cost $12,000 and moorage was like 100 a month with water and electric. Hated northern storms as we would get sea sick. Only once did we have to find somewhere else to sleep for the night. Fun times!

I am laughing my ass off thinking about waking up in the drink! We did have a rather large boat when I was a kid and did some ocean fishing but never spent the night on it. Quite remarquable, you must have lots of life stories. Captain Powell, this is another life experience you are ajusting through. This one, however demands your internal compass to be used with as much clarity, patience and a certain abandonment to the fact that life can always bring us great joy. I lived on a 45 foot houseboat for 10 years, (except winter). I had a wolfdog who was the mascot of the whole community, and elderly women would steal him to take fishing at night. All the lakes in the TVA system just got so crowded, especially in summer that I sold the boat, right after the old wolfdog passed. I have a 28 foot cabin cruiser now, (and something to tow it) and am about to start traveling, again, places like Minnesota, Maine, and any of the remote lakes where I will find few people. I Will travel with the seasons and finish it out to suit my lifestyle after I get on it. I never want to get stuck in one place again. There is a new love in my life now. A rescue animal, (Madison). She is probably pure 3 year old grey wolf. She has adapted well to traveling, and loves boats. I have been camping on Islands where I can let her run off leash. I have a 10 foot inflatable that I can tow along behind the boat, or deflate and store onboard. Life has begun to be very good again.

      Qonita Badeges Docking fees vary from $50 a month in Tennessee up to $100 a day around Boston or Maine. I pay $295 a month near Charleston SC, but there is free wifi and cable which I don't use. However if you own a river or lake front lot it is free. A lot of people buy worthless swamp land then build a walkway out to their boat. Use an incinerator toilet, and legally dump your grey water overboard. You can use lake or river water if the water quality is ok, filter it, for washing and cleaning, then run the hot water side through a reverse osmosis for your drinking water and ice maker. You will have sterile pure water. Living off grid isn't hard on a boat, and if you don't like the neighbors, you can move the same day.

      Probably wasn't the ideal home choice, since clearly you are clueless about upkeep and maintenance of a boat. Now you are asking for others to pay for your mistakes. smfh. I knew you were doomed when you talked about the "front"of the boat. Hope in the future you will consider you are responsible for the life of another before making such changes.

    Very nice family, beautiful boat.
    When you're a boater, especially a live-aboard, you need to know the lingo: 😊
    Pointy nose = bow
    Kitchen = galley
    Dining table = dinette
    Bathroom = head
    Bed = bunk
    I'm so terribly sorry you lost your boat. Those Chris Craft Constellations are such beautiful boats (just look at that cabin!) but those wood hulls are hard to upkeep.
    I hope and pray things worked out for your beautiful family.

    There is nothing wrong with living in small spaces. Just ask any New Yorker living in Manhattan and there is nothing wrong with living on a boat or house boat. There are tons of people who do that too. What would concern me is how child friendly is the neighborhood. I notice that the place seemed rather desolate and I didn't see any other kids. When a child is that small mommy and daddy are all she craves but as she gets older she will want more people her age in her life. Regardless however, kudos for thinking outside the box and I wish the whole family the best!

      I've been living on my 56foot x 15ft Aluminum hull houseboat for over 4 years now.... I pay less on my 50 ft covered slip than my sister does on her monthly HOA fees. Between my $350/month slip fee (that includes free water and high speed WiFi and garbage) i probably don't spend more than an additional $80/month ( and that includes a $35 pump-out fee every 3 weeks or so) on basic boat maintenance. But, owning an all wooden boat is just too upkeep and too many unknowns.... but, i highly recommend living on any fresh water lake. But if you don't know boats.... Please pay to have a professional do a boat survey before buying it (it will give you more bargaining power). It will be the best $400 to $500 you will ever spend. Life is too short for regrets, enjoy.

    I would love to be on a sail boat with my son my wife is not a boat person i know she does too. But she sees it as a way for my son and i to have our time so one day my son and i will set out for a while and enjoy it. The only reason anyone would ever say living on a boat is wrong is they are jelious why cheap living simple life and lots of fun and every day one can see something new or do something new. Too many sheepel are brain dead and think everything that is not there way is wrong. Too all you too bad freedom of choice when my wife and i and my son lived in a tent for 8 months we had the most fun and even she misses the simple life. Yes its alot of work but its way more fun then walking around like a zombie not living life as anyone that lives in a city in a rental does every day the same thing over and over but never learn anything new. Any kid as long as the parents are watchfull for there kids its way better then in a high crime drug infested area where you never know what stupid thing could happen next. Living simple like that they can take out alot not all but alot of the normal social crap that most think is okay ppl getting shot on the street car jackings house breakins and muggins and more to any one that thinks thats okay i say wake up. Teaching kids other ways what ever on a boat in the wild what ever that is taking care of yr kids and taking the time with them unlike city kids there parents are never there so there kids run to other ppl and drugs and crap and gangs for the feeling of parents. Where did you live in the tent? There are places in CA where people do that but they tend to have drug addicts in them and then there are cleanliness problems and fights among them and eventually sheriffs and bull dozers come and move everybody out.

    That postscript is chilling: "from Jane: "About a month after this was filmed, we were motoring on the river and split a seam. Our boat sank, taking with it everything we owned. Thank God none of us were hurt, but it did put us in the scary position of being homeless."

    Awe, damn, so sorry that their boat sank a month after they filmed this video. They must be broken hearted...

      You could tell the boat needed dry-docking, re-caulk & re-paint; just look @ the hull when they were walking up to it- I'll bet their bilge pump was running 24/7.

      polytech44xyz actualy the bildge never runs.. I live in the same marina on row 5.. they live on row8.. it has some loose paint but for a wood plank boat I have seen allot worse boats in my life of being a marine tech.. it is jantzen beach marina in jantzen beach Oregon wich is part of Portland Oregon.. it is a very nice marina have lived here for 3 years as a liveaboard on my boat and I love it and would not live in an apartment again after living aboard.. it is a great peacefull life..

      I don't think this boat really sank.. I have seen this boat lately and it is still afloat.. may be a scam to get money from people and get you to feel sorry for them.. I have seen this happen allot in the boating community.. people show up for a month and have all kinds of sad stories and they cant afford to eat
      and you offer to go to the grocery store and get them food and they want the cash not food.. or they return all the food items and get the cash and later that night you see them on their boat with booz and cigs.. they buy booz and cigs and pot and expect people to buy their food and feed them.. and then you get the people that beg for money to put gas in their boat to go play and you look and they have a boat full of people and coolers full of booze .. that's why it never pays to help people any more.. people these days seem to have a intitlement attitude and expect you to help them and hand out cash.. like all the beggers with signs..will work for food.. you offer to feed them and they ask if you can just give them cash.. too many conn jobs in odays society.. nobody wants to work but they want a paycheck..

    They seem to be a happy family love and respect is there, the child seems happy, so what's wrong? Nothing except for those stupid people who keep commenting on the weight issues!! Get a F life and mind your own business!
    We all live once, and people are free to chose their own way of life! I think they are lucky to have each other and live in such a beautiful place. My only concern is the weather element, especially with all this extreme weather the planet has seen, does it get really cold there? The amount of rain and flooding? And how safe is it from intruders?

      Doesn't matter now. It says in the description that a month after this video, the boat sank, and everything they owned was taken with the boat sinking.

      Nahodakk it now appears based on the latest science to be a product of antibiotics given during childhood that has caused thier gut bacteria to change. You should read up on this when you do bacterial transplants these people would become skinny. Research it.

    My experience in life is that whenever you are making a major purchase, hire an expert to help advise you on the sale and look over CAREFULLY whatever it is you're going to purchase. My husband is a licensed mechanic and has assisted dozens of friends when they were car shopping. Boats, while lovely, are a whole different kettle of fish...especially wooden boats. Maintenance is a necessity and if it's not done constantly, you're taking your life in your hands. They're SO lucky the boat didn't sink as they were sleeping. I hope they've found a new, safe home for their family. It's sad what happened but with a boat of that age....not terribly surprising.

    I imagined something could go wrong when I heard that woman saying the "nose" of the boat. Their first concern should have been to raise their little girl properly, which they clearly didn't with that weird idea of living in a boat without any kind of knowledge about it. Just a poor ignorant couple... Feel sorrow for them and specially for that cute little girl with those parents. Sam, Portugal 🇵🇹

    Not much of a boat person myself, but love the idea! A friend bought a sailboat and lived aboard in San Francisco for seven years, before saving enough to retire at 44 years old.
