Hi Neil, thanks for the video - a nice restore on a classic machine. Thankfully the belts are still being made for many of these. You are right I think that someone had already replaced C768 without sorting the out the driver fault. The original cap specified in the manual was 680uf at 40V, one of the Elco blue ones which seem very reliable. It would seem that the jewellery blag involving Mike Yarwood’s Roller happened on 22nd Sept 1981... Cheers Ian E

Yes, sorry I was wrong there. Checking the parts list it does show 40V. The cap I took out was 390u 16V so was underrated by whoever replaced it. I did wonder why 390 rather than 680 but tbh the value of the speaker coupler isn't critical for something like this (the frequency response in the spec is only down to 60Hz).

Yes the studer A80 and telefunken M15A at the beeb , no doubt would give identical record to play back, but as you say sell a kidney to buy one. even now 40 yars later! love the channel !

`that news story about the robery sounds now just like something Chris Morris would come up with on The Day Today!

There's a bit in the manual warning against connecting the recorder to a live-chassis TV (which would have been a possibility in the 1960s!)

Beware of these professional tapes. Many of them have back coating - a rough coat on the reverse side of the tape, intended to make it wind better on playback and reduce static electricity when fast winding. It will also play merry hell with the felt pressure pads on many old recorders, including this Pye. Yes, these tapes are usually better in every respect, but unfortunately they are not suitable for these old bangers.

That's a good point. The TDK doesn't have that backing but the 3M has it, as does the one from college radio - in a striking shade of blue (I think it was Ampex tape we used there).
