Today's Rockabilly being a underground scene is what keeps it cool. If it becomes a current pop sensation it will become so commercialized today it won't last more than a year or two. Like the Danny and the Juniors song goes Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay !!! The resurgence of Rockabilly in the underground scene is great and to see so many young people interested in this old style of music only goes to show Rock and Roll Will Never Die !!!
Rockabilly was alive and kickin gin the UK before the Stray Cats!!! There were groups like the Jets,Polecats, fab band called the Deltas and the Stargazers!!. The likes of johnny Burnette, charlie Feathers,Johhny powers,Sammy masters,Harry Carter,Lonnie Barron, the Jiants etc were what Rockabilly was all about to me.
i love the historical aspect of rockabilly. i think that if you are going to enjoy the "scene" you should at least know where it come from and how it started. i love these videos!
I can relate to Mary. Im just 20 but when i was 16 i started listening to the music and it just grew on me. I never knew that people could dressed vintage. When i found it out i was so happy. (Unfortunately i dont know many people who do but that doesnt stop me lol )
Young people today have the internet to find each other no matter what your into it's seems to be online. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and about the time the hair bands came on the scene I was so over that music that I went back to my old blues and Rockabilly / 50's Rock and Roll. I think it was American Graffiti that and my folks old records that gave me my appreciation of older music. I'm 50 now and looking back at the music I listened to in school it was a bunch of commercialized bubblegum crap without any soul I know people who think Warrant She's my cherry pie is still cool so to each his or her own I guess but I'll listen to old R&R and blues to the day I die. I wish I'd had the internet to find people who were into the music clothes and clubs back in the 80's young people are truly blessed to have the net today. I'm glad RUclips is here for us all no matter what music movies style of dress we appreciate it's on RUclips.
I have a HUGE collection of antigue photos, and I get that "are those relatives" line all the time. It's nice to know that there are more of us out there. :)
He gives the Stray Cats credit for the rockabilly revival of the 80s but the rockabilly revival was HUGE in the UK back in '76 (that said, the Stay Cats live were awesome). There were many bands who were rockin' until they sold out and created their version of pop-rockabilly. Ken is right, rockabilly will always be underground and obscure; as soon as you try to popularise it then it just loses its edge and becomes pop - just like it did in the 50s and in the same way that punk became new wave.
OMG... at 5:10 The painting "Gaze of the Green Lady" painting I have a copy I got from my grandmothers house She's had it from from the start late 50's-60's It's great to see another one
The funny thing is; Rory Gallagher had the 50's hairstyle but not the music back in 1974. His Irish Tour LP shows him with the mutton chops and the duck tail hair but he rocked hard with alot of blues in it.
Rockabilly Revial starts in the U.K. long before the stray cats, in the 1970's Breathless Dan Coffey and few others had been going over to the usa and brining 45's back which the D.j's started to play out... The sun stuff Charlie feathers, Warren Smith, Billy Riley e.t.c. The First weekenders for rock 'n Roll had 50's us rockabilly stars on the show's in 1979 at caister...
yeah but in 1978 they were not the stray cats but the tom cats, they later called them self the stray cats after there big hit in england, where they wrote runaway boys.
This guy must be just like me because I have an old wedding photo of a couple that looks circa 1945 or so. I had it on my desk before I left my job and people thought I was weird when they asked if those were my grandparents and I said I have no idea who they are, I just like the photo and vintage frame.
I'm not into the rockabilly scene, but I really dig vintage ca. 30s - early 60s. 99% of my wardrobe is vintage. I have a vintage gabardine(pre-Dupont fire) addiction/obsession.
@tomthefunky Good catch. Surprised nobody caught this mistake before. That crazy Chuck Berry! I'm sure he was transporting a minor across state lines to help her in some way, and not for anything immoral.
P.S. Keep in mind the late part of one decade and early part of the next decade are usually the same when it comes to music, and style, cool music, and style that is, for teens, for exp. late 50's/early 60's was greasers, with possibly a ducks ass hairstyle, Levi's, blue swade shoes, etc. then another exp. would be the late 60's/early 70's was hippies, long dirty hair, bell bottoms, brown vests, etc. then another exp. would be late 70's/early 80's was disco, platform shoes, medallions, and afros
Yeah but he wasn't just saying who was big in the rockabilly scene; he was saying what rockabilly was big in the world scene. The Stray Cats were really the next big thing as far as open the eyes of the world to the scene.
Ken did in fact go into greater detail. The interview by himself logged in at a little over an hour so there is a lot of stuff edited out for the sake of making a ten minute video.
Actually Ken does mention how big rockabilly was in Europe in the 70's in his interview. However, I had to cut what was an hour and fifteen minute interview down to about four minutes and a lot of great stuff is not shown.
I have a question: I just found out today coming across it on the internet that rockabilly was revived in the early 80's by ghe stray cats, I know a lot about the oldies, but I 'm suprised I just came across this today, I already knew about the music from Happy Days and Grease and the old time rock'n'roll song by Bob Seager, being music in the late 70's/early 80's bring back late 50's/early 60's style music, but I didn't know about the rockabilly revival. What was the rockabilly revival all abou
Wonder why he goes from the rockabilly of the '50s and skips to the early '80s Stray Cat era rockabilly but doesn't mention the late '70s UK rockabilly explosion with the Rockats and The Polecats and so forth. Didn't those bands start about 1978 or so? Also the Stray Cats started in about 1978 or so too?
it all ready did during the 50s i think thats your version of rockabilly . qouate ray canpi your wrong wrong wrong and u havw been wrong a time or 2 before . u silly billy long live rockabilly.
Rockabilly has already made a comeback. There's a few bands in L.A. that do an fun combination of Electro-Surf-Rockabilly. Basically it's Rockabilly with electronic drums and some keyboards here and there, with a surfy edge.

It was different for me: first, I fell in love with the 50's cars and than with a rockabella. She brought me to the music. Now 20 Years ago... ;-)
I have a HUGE collection of antigue photos, and I get that "are those relatives" line all the time. It's nice to know that there are more of us out there. :)

So to conclude for exp. the early 60's is the 50's, music and style wise.
Back again, so......are we getting more episodes or what?
